I’m steamed!
Last weekend something called peacock.com, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, and my beloved San Francisco Giants (heretofore: PMPG), came up with the brilliant experiment of ‘streaming’ their three-game series on devices like phones, tablets, etc., in lieu of broadcasting the games onto 50-inch HD TVs, like the one in my family room.
First, an admission: I have no idea what streaming is or what the end result of this little endeavor will be. More on that later.
Second, an observation: My father always told me that “everything is about money."
Now, some background.
I was a ten-year-old lad who attended his first Giants game at Seals Stadium back in 1958. Walking into the Stadium that day I remember being mad it wasn’t the Seals we were going to see. There would be no Albie Pearson, my favorite, or Marty Keough, Jack Rena, Grady Hutton, Harry Malmberg, Chip Aspromonte, Frank Kellert, Haywood Sullivan or Leo ‘Black Cat' Kiley.
Yet upon walking to our box seats, which were really a box of sorts since we were surrounded by plywood walls, one still got a whiff of the fresh bread baking at Stemple’s Bakery just beyond the left field fence on Portrero Avenue. All seemed right, except the Giants were playing.
They won. A big rookie named Orlando hit a home run and a fella named Willie Mays (how cool is that name?) made basket catches and actually RAN OUT FROM UNDER HIS HAT while running the bases! Forgive the expression, but I was “Hooked.”

I have been a fan for some 63 years. During that time I have purchased tickets various ways. My friends and I used to buy tickets at the old Roos Brothers store on Market street, keying in on the double headers. I have purchased tickets at the stadium and at various kiosks around town. In the last 20 years I have had season tickets on numerous occasions with various consortiums.
As you can imagine, I have also purchased numerous hats, jerseys, tee shirts, sweat shirts, pennants, souvenirs and the like, not to mention all of the refreshments it takes to feed a kid at the game. Years later, taking my family of four to a game was a $300 day!
Speaking of family, we go crazy at Christmas time. It’s a big time of year for us. We have been known to have in excess of 100 gifts under the tree. I know, we’re crazy. We have thought of seeking help as a family but we were afraid that is precisely the diagnosis the therapist would came up with, so we just live with our little problem. The ‘problem' hit its peak during the World Series years.
I would guess at least 30% of those gifts are Giants-centric. I can’t possibly list all of the Giants items that have been under our yearly Douglas Fir but a few would be all kinds of clothing, belts, scarves, purses, wallets, lunch pails, sandwich containers, beer mugs, wine glasses, cocktail glasses, golf balls, golf tees, golf ball markers, golf divot tools, head covers, phone covers, tablet covers, memorabilia, wine stoppers, salt and pepper shakers, logo-ed wine, logo-ed beer, tree ornaments, blankets, pillow cases, key chains, pencils, pens, letterhead stationery, credit cards, license plate frames, decals, wrist watches, etc. I think Mario Alioto, the Giants director of marketing, would love us.
I drew the line at a welcome mat outside my front door because I didn’t want anyone wiping their feet on my team’s logo. I also nixed a garden gnome as those things creep me out. Speaking of the garden, I do have a corner where a black sign with orange letters hangs. The letters say, “2010-2012-2014.” Around that sign are hanging flower pots with orange gazanias.
Okay, what does all of this mean? It means I love Giants baseball, win or lose. I am at a point of my life where I have the time to watch all of the games on television that I care to. I know there are a lot of fans in my age group who feel the same way. Keep in mind that some of us are not ‘tech savvy.’ When I heard the games were going to be streamed, I tried my best to see if I could sign up. Alas, I failed.
So last weekend…FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND…I missed a three-game series on TV when my team had the best record in baseball and was playing unbelievably—and somewhat shockingly—well!
I’m sure this streaming crap will continue. Perhaps it will start with streaming the Dodger games for three easy payments of $39.95 and continue from there. If that’s the plan, the money grab, then I’m out. Sixty three years of support rewarded with the ultimate “Half of the Peace Sign” by PMPG on FATHER’S DAY, no less.
Of course no one will care, nor should they. It’s a different world with different technology and it needs to move on. I guess I just needed to vent...
But I’m still steamed!

Giants –
One of Baseball's Great Stories – Thus Far

If you’ve been a fan of the San Francisco Giants these last few years you’ve know one thing: Frustration.
Since 2016 when they last made it to the playoffs, the Giants have been bad or at best, boring and mediocre. But not this year.
As these words are being typed, the Giants have the BEST record in baseball. THE BEST RECORD. Think about that for a moment.
But the casual fan looking at the Giants current roster is still not at all impressed. Outside of three aging regulars from the glory days, (Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Buster Posey,) the 2021 edition of the Giants is full of little known journeymen such as Wilmer Flores, Alex Dickerson and Donovan Solano and unproven youngsters like Mauricio Dubon and Steven Duggar.
Most folks who cover baseball for a living still look at this ‘rag-tag’ team and think they’re a fluke. A friend of mine who is a national baseball writer told me bluntly that: “They’re gonna fade quickly down the stretch.”
But perhaps he hasn’t looked at the remarkable stories that are developing, such as an unremarkable young pitcher named Kevin Gausman. The hard throwing righthander has developed one of the game’s most deadly split fingered fastballs and for now is the best pitcher in baseball? Did anyone see this coming; an 8-1 record, an ERA of 1.49 and an average of eight strikeouts a game? Gausman has a great chance to be the National League’s starting pitching in the All-Star Game.
And who expected Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey to reach back into the fountain of youth and stir memories of the great seasons they had 7 to 11 years ago when the Giants won three World Series titles? But both have looked fresh and revitalized.
And who predicted the Giants would be leading all of baseball with 114 homers? The Giants hit five in one game a little over a week ago and a couple of days later they bashed another four in a rout of the Phillies. And in a recent stretch, the Giants ran off 16 wins over a 21 game stretch, including a memorable extra inning victory over the A’s that saw Steven Duggar single in the tying run and then score the winning run all the way from first base on catcher Curt Casali’s double.

There have always been some great stories and surprises in baseball over the last 100-plus years: The Miracle Boston Braves of 1914, the Cinderella New York Mets of 1969, and of course that first World Series winning Giants team of 2010.
But all three of those clubs were supposed to be -- at the worst -- respectable. After contending until the final day of last year’s pandemic-shortened season, the players, Giants management and their fans all looked ahead with mild optimism toward 2021. But few expected this kind of success and those who have covered baseball for years were not upbeat about their chances.
To make it to the playoffs a club needs solid starting pitching and the Giants appear to have that. A team also needs solid defense and the Giants have that too. A team also needs depth and one of the reasons the Giants have been so successful is that many of their backups have stepped in and come through at critical times in games. Like outfielder Mike Tauchman. the obscure former New York Yankee saved a game in Los Angeles by robbing Albert Pujols of what would have been a game-winning homer and also blasted a late inning grand slam at Texas to spark a stirring comeback win.
And it certainly doesn’t hurt when a club has a young manager who works well with people and has an open door policy. Gabe Kapler seems to have some of the positive qualities of previous Giants’ skippers, such as Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker, that made them winners.
The Giants play in arguably the toughest division in baseball. The Dodgers have been a powerhouse for the better part of a decade while the Padres are one of the game’s brightest and fastest rising teams. To think that the Giants might beat these two clubs out for the top spot in the NL West is to strain the limits of credulity.
Yet here we are in late June and the Giants not only have the best record in baseball but they have a convincing lead over both of those clubs. And now that we’re nearly to the All-Star break we have a pretty fair sample size of what to expect for the rest of the season. If you do some quick math you’ll see that San Francisco only has to play at a .500 level for the rest of the season and they will almost certainly be in the playoffs, most likely as a Wild Card entry.
But this club is getting used to life ‘at the top’ and the prevailing mood around their clubhouse is: “Hey, who’s the best team in the National League West… why not us?”

Cowell scores his third goal of the 2021 season, Quakes welcome back capacity crowd
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday evening at PayPal Park. The match was the Quakes' first with no capacity restrictions since March 2020 and was attended by a sold-out crowd of 18,000 fans. The match also featured a number of festivities, including skydivers pregame and a halftime ceremony honoring frontline workers.
The LA Galaxy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Samuel Grandsir sent a cross to Chicharito, who redirected the ball goalward. LA would then add two more goals in second half.
San Jose created a number of chances before finding the breakthrough in the 82nd minute. Seventeen-year-old Cade Cowell received a pass, turned onto his left foot and sent a low shot just inside the far post. The Quakes pushed forward to cut the deficit in half, even hitting the post on two occasions, but couldn't add to their tally.
The Earthquakes will now prepare to travel to the Midwest to face Minnesota United FC next Saturday, July 3. The match kicks off from Allianz Field at 5:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.
GAME NOTES
- Saturday's match marked the first with no capacity restrictions since March 7, 2020.
- The Earthquakes now hold a 3-7-1 record (10 pts.) during the 2021 MLS regular season and are currently in 10th place in the Western Conference.
- The Quakes are now 26-34-16 all-time vs. the LA Galaxy.
- Forward Cade Cowell scored his third goal of the season and fourth of his MLS career.
- Midfielder Chofis tallied an assist on Cowell's goal, marking his first assist in MLS

Oakland Roots Settle for Draw in Closed-Door Match Against Austin Bold
Oakland Roots get their first clean sheet of the season as goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz made his return to the team after being on international duty with Curacao.
While Austin outshot Roots sixteen to three, Roots defense held strong. Roots look to stout defensively, as they travel down to Southern California this Tuesday to face San Diego Loyal who are coming off a win against Las Vegas. Despite neither team finding the back of the net, the match was a tough battle with six players receiving yellow cards.
Head Coach Jordan Ferrell on the team's first clean sheet of the season:
" Yeah it's important. We've been leaking goals. Even in the last game against OC we gave up a bad one. I think tonight even though they had shots, I don't think they were dangerous, which is a big positive for us. Look at the way we started and to get here tonight."
On why the team struggled to create as many chances as games past.
"After two weeks off, it’s hard to say you are in a rhythm. I think there were a couple of moments when it all settled, and that's just going to come from games. We have a run of quite a few games coming, and I think we will be able to find a rhythm. I think we created some pretty good ones late on that could have been, but I also knew they were really dangerous on the counter attack. We wanted to balance being expansive and opening the game up with what could punish us. "
Any message for the Oakland fans who could not be here tonight:
"We are all disappointed we could not kick off at home with them. I think we missed their energy tonight for sure, but we plan to be back on July 10th in front of them and put on a good performance. "
Goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz on the first clean sheet:
"Nothing better than a clean sheet. That's what you want as a goalkeeper; you just don't want to concede goals. We wanted to win games too, but we didn't score unfortunately. "
On the need for getting a run of games:
"That's the main thing that we miss. We need to get games, get games in our legs, and need to play together because you can only do so much in training. Game after game, if we get that feeling, it will be better for us. "

His father, a Justice Department lawyer who argued cases in the Supreme Court—most notably Brown vs. Board of Education—imbued in young Peter a strong sense of social justice.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road.
