Connect With Pacifica This Week
Greetings!

Summer 2019 is approaching fast! We begin our summer with the 2019 Taste of Pacifica. This annual event features food and beverages from over 20 of our local restaurants for your indulgence and delight. Fourth of July weekend is also on the horizon. On the 4th, the City of Pacifica’s Parks, Recreation & Beaches Department will host our annual 5-mile Rocket Run and food, fun, games, and music. The Pacifica Police Department reminds us to use only “Safe and Sane” fireworks and that possession or discharging illegal fireworks will result in a $1,000 fine. See below for more information on these items.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2019, 7 PM, Council Chambers, 2212 Beach Blvd. Please let us know if you have comments or questions, and thank you for wanting to Connect with Pacifica!

Sincerely,
LORENZO HINES JR.
Assistant City Manager
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
LAST DAY TO APPLY: UP Task Force
Today is the last day to apply for the Unhoused in Pacifica (UP) Task Force! The application can be downloaded here or completed electronically here. Top candidates will be interviewed by Friday, June 28. A more detailed informational report about what the formation process will entail is available here.

Background – The need for a dedicated task force has grown out of an increase in recent years and months of the unhoused population in Pacifica and a proliferation of the unhoused living in over-sized vehicles, such as motorhomes. Recognizing the magnitude of this challenge and the City’s resource limitations, the Pacifica City Council identified the need for a Task Force of diverse stakeholders, representing the full spectrum of viewpoints about this topic, to volunteer their time and energy to research and define the unhoused and over-sized vehicle challenges in Pacifica and assess potential solutions. Pacifica Resource Center Executive Director, Anita Rees, and City Manager, Kevin Woodhouse, have worked collaboratively on the formation process for the task force. If you, or someone you know, is interested in assisting with this critical task force work, please apply to be considered.

Be Safe this 4th of July
Please use only "Safe and Sane" fireworks which are sold at local fireworks stands. These fireworks are easily identifiable by a State Fire Marshal logo on product packaging. All other fireworks are ILLEGAL to possess and use in Pacifica.

  • Inspect all fireworks. Never use damaged or leaking fireworks.
  • Never give fireworks to a small child.
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
  • Light only one item at a time. Use a shovel and drop any “dud” fireworks into a pail of water.
  • Keep spectators at least 10 feet away.
  • Use fireworks in a clear area at least 20 feet away from a house, wood fence, or brush.
  • Keep an extra pail of water, wet towels, charged garden hose or fire extinguisher on hand for emergencies.
  • Do not point fireworks at anyone.
  • If someone is injured or a fire is started, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Clean up after your fun. Help keep our streets and beaches CLEAN.
REMEMBER: Those possessing or discharging illegal fireworks are subject to a $1,000 fine. If you host a gathering on your property, and your guests are discharging illegal fireworks, YOU are subject to the $1,000 fine. Aside from being illegal, these fireworks are dangerous and were responsible for several fires in Pacifica last year.

The stockpiling of illegal fireworks and materials used to make them is extremely dangerous! If you are aware of someone who is in possession of quantities of illegal fireworks, please contact the Pacifica Police Department. You may also make anonymous tips via our tip line at 650-359-4444. You can anonymously report online here. However, if you observe something that you believe is dangerous requiring an immediate law enforcement response, please call us at 650-738-7314, or dial 911.

San Mateo County Transit Authority Survey
San Mateo County Transportation Authority is asking for YOUR INPUT on how to allocate funding. Help frame transportation funding in Pacifica for the coming years by taking this survey!

In 2018, voters approved Measure W, a half-cent sales tax for transportation in San Mateo County. San Mateo County Transportation Authority will manage fifty percent of the measure. Currently, the agency is determining how to best evaluate projects so that those of greatest merit are priorities for future funding. You can learn more about the project here. The survey closes June 30.
Open Space Preservation Award Nominations
SFO’s Noise Insulation Initiatives
The San Francisco International Airport is overseeing the Replacement and Second Chance Noise Insulation Initiative. It is intended to provide acoustical improvements to qualifying residential properties that meet certain eligibility requirements. These improvements are offered at no cost to eligible property owners.

This initiative has two main components:
  • Second Chance Initiative: This initiative gives a second chance to participate in the Noise Insulation Program (NIP) to owners that did not participate in previous phases of the NIP.
  • Replacement Initiative: This initiative provides repair or replacement of eligible acoustical improvements to residential properties that were insulated in previous phases of the NIP, where the improvements have failed.

To be considered, the property must be located inside a specific noise boundary corresponding to the area where the average daily aircraft noise level is equal to or greater than 65 decibels. For more information, see here.

To determine your property’s preliminary eligibility, or request additional information, please contact:
  • C. Kell-Smith & Associates, Inc. Aircraft Noise Insulation Office
