Greetings!
This week San Mateo County moved to the second stage (“Red Tier”) of the State’s reopening system. This is good news as it means we are making progress to reduce coronavirus cases and positive test rates. It also means that many of Pacifica’s local businesses that were forced to close can now reopen with restrictions. Restrictions being the operative word, as the county’s new risk level is still considered “substantial” and we all must continue to follow health and safety guidelines. These include face coverings, social distancing, limited gatherings, and any other specific industry safety measures a business may have in place. By following safety protocols, we will all help to continue to slow the spread of the virus.
On Tuesday, September 29th at 7pm, the City Council will provide direction on land use strategies for the Sharp Park Specific Plan. Land Use strategies include maximum building heights, how many multi-family residences may be allowed on a site, where bike and pedestrian improvements should be located, and other policies to enhance the vibrancy of Sharp Park. Your input is critical to shaping the plan. You can read the agenda report and find info on how the attend the virtual meeting here.
Finally, the deadline for the 2020 Census is fast approaching. By completing the simple Census questionnaire, you will make an impact on community funding for the next 10 years. The County is also looking for volunteers to get the word out about the Census by canvasing the community. Training and virus protection gear will be provided. If you are interested, please contact the City Manager’s Office at cmoffice@ci.pacifica.ca.us.
This weekend is projected to be warm with high a high fire danger risk. Please remember to be fire safe and enjoy the first autumn weekend of the year.
Sincerely,
TINA WEHRMEISTER
Planning Director/Acting Assistant City Manager

Living in Mountain Lion Country
|
|
The Pacifica Police Department regularly shares information through our social media platforms on living with mountain lions and coyotes following a reported sighting. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife (DFW) is the authority on mountain lions and wildlife and what may lawfully be done to manage their interface with communities. They are well versed in the applicable laws regulating these matters. The Police Department has consulted with wardens from the DFW in the past regarding mountain lion activity in Pacifica. The DFW web site contains useful information about living in mountain lion country, see the link below. Further questions may be answered by contacting the area DFW office at 916-445-0380.
The Friends of San Pedro Valley Park recently hosted a presentation via Zoom by the Bay Area Puma Project on living with mountain lions. This is a research conservation and education program for mountain lions in and around the Bay Area. Click here to find a recording of this presentation.
Tips for Living with Wildlife:
- Acknowledge that you live in mountain lion country and make a commitment to educate yourself. Talk to your neighbors and work together.
- Never feed deer or other wildlife; it is illegal to feed deer and other big game in California and it will attract mountain lions.
- Deer-proof your landscaping by avoiding plants that deer like to eat. For tips, request A Gardener’s Guide to Preventing Deer Damage from DFW offices.
- Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.
- Don’t leave small children or pets outside unattended.
- Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.
- Provide sturdy, covered shelters for sheep, goats, and other vulnerable animals.
- Don’t allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
- Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums and other potential mountain lion prey.

Upcoming PG&E Leak-Survey Helicopter Flights
|
|
This week, PG&E will be conducting helicopter patrols on gas transmission lines in our area as a part of routine safety inspections. This inspection uses helicopters with LIDAR technology to navigate gas transmission pipelines and helicopters will fly low, between 300 and 500 feet, when conducting inspections. Some inspections may require ground personnel to perform a follow-up survey.
PG&E takes customer safety seriously. PG&E employees and contractors always carry identification cards and are happy to provide them to you upon request.
Your patience is appreciated as these inspections on are conducted. For more information, call 1-800-743-5000 or email accessmymeter@pge.com.

Whether home or at work, we should all be prepared to be impacted by a Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) event this year. Last year’s local PSPS event was from October 26-28, and impacted 57,000 customers in San Mateo County, alone.
To keep customers informed about PSPS events, PG&E has prepared a 30-minute video providing details of its Community Wildfire Safety Program and sharing ways customers and communities can plan and prepare for Public Safety Power Shutoff events. The video is available on Youtube here.
In addition to our critical City facilities with back up generator power, the City of Pacifica and PG&E have agreed to open a Community Resource Center with a backup power supply at the Pacifica Community Center on Crespi Drive in the event of a local PSPS event. Make sure you and your family are prepared for a possible PSPS event where you live.
