Greetings!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Please heed the State and Health Officials’ guidance about how to safely enjoy this holiday. As we enter the holiday season, the City’s Parks, Beaches, and Recreation staff, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, are hard at work on creative ideas for safely celebrating the holidays. I hope you can participate in some of these alternative style celebrations, or create your own that captures your reflections on 2020 and your hopes for 2021.
Sincerely,
KEVIN WOODHOUSE
City Manager

Living in Mountain Lion Country
|
|
The Pacifica Police Department regularly shares information through our social media platforms on living with mountain lions and coyotes following a reported sighting. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife (DFW) is the authority on mountain lions and wildlife and what may lawfully be done to manage their interface with communities. They are well versed in the applicable laws regulating these matters. The Police Department has consulted with wardens from the DFW in the past regarding mountain lion activity in Pacifica. The DFW web site contains useful information about living in mountain lion country, see the link below. Further questions may be answered by contacting the area DFW office at 916-445-0380.
The Friends of San Pedro Valley Park recently hosted a presentation via Zoom by the Bay Area Puma Project on living with mountain lions. This is a research conservation and education program for mountain lions in and around the Bay Area. Click here to find a recording of this presentation.
Tips for Living with Wildlife:
- Acknowledge that you live in mountain lion country and make a commitment to educate yourself. Talk to your neighbors and work together.
- Never feed deer or other wildlife; it is illegal to feed deer and other big game in California and it will attract mountain lions.
- Deer-proof your landscaping by avoiding plants that deer like to eat. For tips, request A Gardener’s Guide to Preventing Deer Damage from DFW offices.
- Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.
- Don’t leave small children or pets outside unattended.
- Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.
- Provide sturdy, covered shelters for sheep, goats, and other vulnerable animals.
- Don’t allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
- Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums and other potential mountain lion prey.
