Greetings!
Happy New Year! Last year’s New Year message summarized significant projects and initiatives that would be completed or see significant progress during 2020. What a different year it turned out to be! However, I’m proud to say significant progress was made, all while City services recalibrated and adapted to focus on essential services and how to provide them safely, in addition to launching significant efforts to keep the community informed about Coronavirus information. It hasn’t been easy, on anyone or any business or organization. Although we’re currently enduring a surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, hopefully this will be the final surge, as vaccinations roll out. Hang in there, and please follow health guidelines.
With deep respect and sympathy to all who lost a loved one this year, and wishing you all a healthy and joyful 2021!
Sincerely,
KEVIN WOODHOUSE
City Manager

Just last week, on December 29, 2020, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake devastated parts of Croatia. Are you prepared for the next major earthquake or a tsunami? Do you know how to receive earthquake notification alerts on your mobile device, or where the tsunami alert sirens are located in Pacifica? Learn the answers to these questions and more.

UPDATE
Pacifica Pier / Seawall Repair
Starting Tuesday, January 12, 2021
|
|
Recently, the Northern California Coast experienced King Tides and large swells which affected the Pacifica coastline and revealed a void that has been forming underneath the sidewalk near the Pacifica Pier caused by the inflow of seawater. The City has begun emergency repair work with a local contractor and marine engineering firm. The void, which has been created by an opening at the bottom of the seawall where the seawall meets the pier abutment, has been temporarily stabilized. After consultation with the City’s coastal engineering consultant, the City has interviewed three coastal contractors for an emergency design-build contract to complete the work to protect the City’s street and utility infrastructure, and will be moving forward with a local contractor, MRC, who has experience in similar coastal repair work.
The Contractor placed large rocks at the ocean side of the breach to prevent wave energy from entering the void during the week of December 21st. This allows for a safe workspace during the repair, prevention of the void growing larger, and increased protection for an area that has seen repeated failures. Now that the breach area is safe to enter, the repairs for the breach will begin during favorable tide conditions.
Starting Tuesday, January 12, 2021, construction will begin and will go into the evening hours to make the most of the tide schedule. During construction, residents in the area should be advised that Beach Boulevard will be closed to thru traffic near the pier area and be limited to residents access only. Pedestrian traffic will also be limited to residents only and may be subject to rerouting to Palmetto to cross the construction area. Residents should expect noise, equipment, and trucks in the area. If you are visiting the Pacifica Pier, visitors are advised to walk from the south (Montecito Avenue). The Pacifica Pier may need to be closed intermittently during the construction work for safety reasons.
Should you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the Department of Public Works – Field Services Division at (650) 738-3760 or email [email protected]. Thank you for your cooperation.

Deadline Extended
'CA Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant'
|
|
"California’s Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA), part of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), announced that the deadline for the first round of applications for the 'Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant Program' will be extended until January 13, 2021.
The program, which officially opened December 30, experienced high traffic – receiving thousands of completed applications. However, due to the high traffic, some businesses may have had trouble accessing the application. Adjustments to the program’s website have been made and the application period has been extended to ensure that all interested applicants have the opportunity to apply.
The Round 1 application deadline has been extended from January 8 to January 13, 2021 at 11:59 PM."

To ensure all Californians are earthquake prepared, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) developed Earthquake Warning California, which is the nation’s first statewide earthquake warning system that provides several seconds of warning to mobile device users in the area before shaking occurs. Earthquake Warning California offers no-cost earthquake warning resources, including:
-
MyShake App. A mobile app that can be downloaded for mobile devices at no cost from Google Play the Apple App Store. App location services must be set to “always on” so that ground sensors can alert those in the nearby area when shaking is detected.
-
Android Earthquake Alerts. An earthquake warning system available to any new or updated Android devices that uses that same technology as the MyShake App.
-
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs). Text-like messages from the government during emergency situations. This includes: Presidential, Imminent Threat (fire, earthquake, floods, etc.), and AMBER alerts.
Earthquake Warning California resources are designed to notify users to quickly take protective action such as to drop, cover, and hold on. These earthquake warning tools can help protect lives and prevent damage to properties in the areas hardest hit during an earthquake. During serious shaking situations, individuals may be knocked down to the ground, so sheltering prior to shaking is the prudent thing to do.
