COVID-19 cases are rising dramatically in California and throughout the country. Current projections show that without additional intervention to slow the spread of COVID-19, the number of available adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in the State of California will reach capacity by mid-December. As you may have heard, on December 3, the California Department of Health announced a Regional Stay Home Order, which will go into effect within 24 hours in California regions with less than 15% ICU availability. Although this does not apply to San Mateo County yet, if (or when) we do hit that threshold, the Order prohibits all gatherings of members of other households, closes sector operations except for critical infrastructure and retail, and requires 100% masking and physical distancing in all others. San Mateo County is included in the “Bay Area” region, which currently has only 25.3% ICU availability remaining. You can learn more about this order here, as well as keep updated on San Mateo County’s current ICU capacity.
