Plant Trees with BEC in the Chico Community

The City of Chico and Butte Environmental Council are continuing their efforts to expand Chicos thriving urban canopy THIS winter on December 10th, from 9 am to 1 pm as we host a community wide tree planting!

Our goal for planting trees throughout Chico is to help alleviate future consequences of climate change. Planting these trees will help improve air quality, reduce energy and water costs, and provide shade to protect our infrastructure and reduce heat related illnesses to members of our community.

We will kick off the event at 20th Street Community Park with refreshments and snacks for volunteers. We will also have music and community partners tabling so you can learn more about other great organizations in the community.

We invite you to volunteer with us to plant trees or table! If you would like to sign up to plant trees with us, please email urbanforest@becnet.org on or before December 5th.

If you missed your chance to claim a tree for this December's tree planting, don’t worry! You can click the button below to sign up and to reserve your spot for our next tree planting!

Oak Way Community Garden

December Garden Work Day 12/3

Come out and help us prepare the garden for winter! Tasks include spreading wood chips along pathways, building a new cinder block compost bay, waste and debris removal, turning the compost piles etc.

Bring in your household food scraps during this time as well to be added to the compost!

Garden Materials Donations

Want to sponsor the Oak Way Community Garden? We are looking for donations to continue to support community gardening and composting initiatives. Materials or monetary donation appreciated.

We have a weekly compost pickup service!

This program aims to divert food waste from the landfill and provide usable soil for gardeners to grow food with, closing the loop of our food system.

Sign up as a household to get your food scraps collected or volunteer help collect food scraps in your neighborhood!

We currently do pick ups every Monday, with about 30 houses on the route. Once the compost is collected we have three drop off sites, one close to each neighboorhood.

How To Be More Sustainable This Christmas

Did you know that Americans generate more trash from Thanksgiving to New Years than they do any other time of year?

According to Stanford University, this extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week! This shocking amount of garbage is a result of excess packaging from online orders, wrapping paper, large meals, and decorations. We can make a huge difference this year by adjusting a few simple choices.

The gift. If you want to shop sustainably this season here is how you do it. First before buying a gift ask yourself “do they actually need this item?” Next try to shop for used items, most of the time you will find what you are looking for. If you can’t find it used, shop at a local shop!

The wrapping. Cute holiday wrapping paper, boxes, and bags have become one of our worst enemies. Look for recycled cardboard boxes first, this way the box gets another purpose and you are helping save a natural resource. Create your own wrapping out of recycled paper. You can spice it up by adding holiday designs using stamps, markers or paint. Another alternative is buying or creating reusable cloth wrapping paper that can be used every year.

Travel & Transportation. I am talking about your body and the gifts here. When buying your gifts try shopping local first, this will save packaging materials and reduce emissions created to ship your present. You can also reduce emissions by the way you travel to each other. Try carpooling or taking the train as travel alternatives this year.

Have a class or group that wants to learn more about sustainablity through recycling and composting?
