Greetings!
It's hard for me to believe that, as I write this, I have been back in the office for almost as long as I was away on sabbatical--and that Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Last week, I enjoyed two days with my sabbatical cohort, learning how the sabbatical process had affected them and their organizations. We were cautioned to make sure that we brought the balance and healthy habits of the sabbatical into the future--that we should be vigilant about "no backsliding!" As we head into what is often a busy and hectic season, my wish for all of you is that you maintain your vigilance as well, maintaining (or developing!) some healthy habits that help you keep perspective and joy in your heart this holiday season. Habits like investing in
professional development opportunities, getting out to
volunteer, VOTING, and networking informally with colleagues are all ones we can recommend. (Another good piece of advice I can personally attest to: don't break your hip between Christmas and New Year's!)
Last month, we were excited to work with both
Novant Health and
BB&T to organize service projects for their employee teams. At Forsyth Medical Center, more than 100 volunteers spent the day assembling hygiene kits for our neighbors in need in Forsyth, Davie, and Davidson counties. Later that same week, three teams from the BB&T Leadership Development Program worked on a variety of projects for our partners at
The Enrichment Center,
Habitat for Humanity, and the
Ronald McDonald House. As we head into the Christmas season, we know that many of you might be looking for a service project as well--please let us know how we can help!
We kick off this month by welcoming our nationally-known speaker,
Kivi Leroux-Miller, on
November 8
th. Her workshops are known for being both inspirational and practice-based. Did this date catch up to you too quickly? Never fear--there are still a few spots available but
don't wait to register any longer! We'd love to see you for either a half day or, better yet, make the time and investment to stay the full day and we'll reward you with a tasty lunch. (You know that we are known for our tasty lunches, right?)
I'm also happy to report that we have renewed our partnership with
Verified Volunteers, which offers what we consider to be a best-in-class background check service developed exclusively for the volunteer and service sector. We're excited that many of our nonprofit partners have started to use Verified Volunteers since we first launched the partnership back in 2014, including groups such as
Bookmarks, the
Girl Scouts,
Love Out Loud, and the
Piedmont Opera--that's a pretty diverse cross-section of our network! You'll continue to hear more about their most recent offerings over the coming months.
Lastly, we all know that recovery from Hurricanes Florence and Michael will be a long process for many of our neighbors here in North Carolina (my insurance adjuster is coming to my house on Saturday). As mentioned last month, NC VOAD is keeping an
updated spreadsheet of volunteer needs and donations, and I would encourage all of you to continue to monitor that list. In addition, our friends at the
NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service have been asked by Governor Cooper's office to track the efforts of all organizations working on hurricane relief in NC in order to recognize the extent of the assistance being provided by fellow citizens. If your organization is actively involved in mobilizing people and resources for hurricane recovery, please record your efforts on
a shared Google doc or let them know
via email. They'll need:
- Organization name and best point of contact details: name, title, phone, email
- NC counties in which you are performing work and general type of work (feeding, shelter, cleanup, repair, etc.)
- Number of volunteers and volunteer hours per month
- If applicable, volume of goods and services provided per month
If you have any questions regarding the above, please don’t hesitate to contact
Beth Hardison.
Stay warm and stay connected!
Yours in service,
Amy Lytle

Partner Applications Now Open for Wake Forest University's 2019 Summer Nonprofit Immersion Program! Many of you, as well as HandsOn, have benefited in the past by hosting a
WFU SNIP intern during June and July. This year, the program is excited to announce a new partnership with the School of Divinity, which will allow them to expand the size of the SNIP program to accommodate up to 15 additional placements!
In response to feedback from several nonprofit partners, they have moved up the partner recruitment timeline to the Fall. This change will allow them more time to review and have follow up conversations with potential sites and still make decisions by the beginning of 2019 about where interns will be placed. They will begin recruiting student participants at the start of the Spring semester and, as they did last year, will include selected site partners in the recruitment and selection process.
This year's application
deadline is November 19th! Because of this new partnership, we have made some slight changes to the application.
You must complete a new 2019 application even if you have served as a SNIP site in the recent past and have a past application on file. Questions? Please reach out to
Shelley Sizemore.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) Announces Its New Community-Based Strategy
ZSR
’s
Community-Based Strategy
is one of three strategies that comprise
All for NC: Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation's Framework for Grantmaking and Learning
.
ZSR believes that meaningful change is generated at the local level, where community members use their experiences and connections to people and places to improve the world around them. Changes are often driven by the unique assets, challenges and opportunities within communities and that people who live in those communities yearn to connect to one another to work across lines of difference. To this end, ZSR’s Community-Based Strategy is explicitly focused on change at the community level and includes two grant opportunities:
- A Collaborative Problem-Solving approach will make awards to a limited number of community proposals that bring people together and allow them to self-define and tailor a path for creating positive change. The deadline for proposal summaries for these grants is December 3rd! Please note that submitting a Proposal Summary is the preliminary step in introducing a proposal to ZSR. For more information, visit their website.
- A Community Progress Fund that seeks to support local communities by making time-limited investments at key moments and is intended to build on existing momentum to help move an issue, idea, or organization forward. The deadline for Letters of Intent is December 3rd! Please note that submitting a Letter of Intent is the preliminary step in introducing a proposal to ZSR. Therefore, it is not necessary to contact a ZSR staff member. More details can be found on their website.
