Because of structural racism and Black men’s unique history in this country, their mental health and treatment are intimately tied to factors such as implicit bias on the part of medical providers, high poverty rates, and low access to quality psychological and psychiatric services.

Newsflash
Just early this week, we commemorated World Mental Health Day. However, when it comes to black men, their mental health is intimately tied to masculinity norms entwined with gender roles that are deeply rooted in a culture and a system that predisposes them to mental health challenges. A system that asks so much of them but offers an incommensurate amount of support. This issue of the RISE features two influential voices in the black men's mental health field; Claude King and Camillia Harris who do an amazing job in using their voice to support mental health among black men. Alongside other changemakers, they are contributing to the larger mandate of advancing racial justice and mental health equity.

As the founder of justUs MH, Foundation I am excited that my obedience to push beyond my own pain and grief birthed the Black Men's Mental Health Conference. This groundbreaking conference aims to foster mental health awareness and promote suicide prevention in various communities across the United States.
At justUs, we believe that mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, and we recognize the unique challenges faced by Black men when it comes to their mental and emotional health. To address these challenges head-on, we held our inaugural Black Men's Mental Health Conference in Dayton, Ohio earlier this year, and it was a resounding success. With sponsorships and donations, we can reach individuals who demonstrate a financial need and assist in them obtaining behavioral health services, ensuring that everyone has access to the support they deserve. Our shared objective is to consistently bring together change makers in the form of mental health professionals, community leaders, and individuals who are passionate about mental health. Together, we discuss a wide range of topics that are relevant to the mental well-being of Black men. By having panel discussions our attendees are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to gain a better understanding of their own mental health, recognize signs of distress, and confidently seek professional assistance when needed.
We want to create a safe space for Black men to share their experiences, seek guidance, and connect with professionals who understand their unique struggles. Together, we can break down the barriers and stigmas, to ensure that no one is left behind.Let's continue to work towards a future where mental health support is accessible to all. “It is OK to not be OK”.

| |
|
The MHA Equity Impact Zones will create an evidence base for the efficacy of community-based and community-led groups equipped to implement their own long-term solutions to addressing specific and harmful mental health-related disparities.
Amid historic rates of suicide and overdose deaths, there is an urgent need for organizations to align for progress and make the transformative change that this moment demands. Updates from partner strategy discussions on the future direction to build a generational strategy toward well-being and justice.
We have witnessed unprecedented claw-back of civil rights due to a series of Supreme Court decisions that threaten minorities, women, and LGBTQ+ communities. These decisions were set in motion decades ago to take back the courts and roll back protections for Black, indigenous and other marginalized communities by groups seeking to roll back equity and racial justice. These decisions are the manifestations of a generational strategy to protect and preserve a false hierarchy of human value. In this moment, we have no choice as generational stewards but to lean into our power and privilege to try to bend the arc back toward justice. This requires a generational strategy
