Summertime is here!
Greetings!

The summer season is upon us and for the first time in quite a while, families and friends are gathering in major ways.

I just kicked off my summer with a bit of tubing down the Santa Fe River. Despite being a native, it was my first time tubing in Florida.

The river was jam-packed! Because of this, I may have overcome my fear of an alligator encounter.

There's one thing that makes it feel like summer is finally back: major summer movie releases.
Summer at The Movies

There are quite a few fun flicks coming our way:

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Jurassic World Dominion
  • Thor: Love and Thunder

and because I particularly love a trippy, whimsical adventure story, Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Here at The Portico we're preparing for a few blockbuster events ourselves:

  • Mindi's Habitat House Dedication - Date TBD
  • Art + Open Mic Night - Aug. 26
  • Remembrance Project Memorial Dedication - Aug. 29

"Let's turn and burn" into the summer!

Whether it's a festival, movie night or special event, I sincerely hope you and your family take every opportunity to celebrate this season.

Peace,

Chalette M. Davis

Two New Installations at The Portico

Cafe Artist - Demetasphere
The Community Hall - Thomas Murray

Demetasphere

Demetasphere is an artist who is exploring the juxtaposition of the microcosm within a macrocosmic environment. She creates acrylic art that is influenced by her fascination with microbiology and the observable universe. She wants observers to get a glimpse into the microbial universe that exist in and all around us.

Read more about our cafe artist here.

Thomas Murray

Thomas Murray works primarily in oil paint, with forays into sound, music composition, performance, and digital video. His work is deeply personal--gleaned from current political events, he works on the edge of recognition. Thomas appropriates archetypal imagery, such as the Garden of Eden to explore the relations of globalization and a subtle critique of the viewer/ consumer and our place in relocating histories.

JOIN THE JUSTICE TEAM

Via Zoom

Join this small group of people who engage in advocacy and awareness around important issues in social and racial justice in our community.

There are multiple ways you can join the team and make a difference.

Justice Team Opportunity: Lead the Fines and Fees Initiative

This “gap ministry” is a grass-roots community initiative born out of a Justice Team community event, Fines, Fees and Felonies: Fight the Poverty to Prison Pipeline. A cadre of attorneys from Sacred Heart join The Justice Team and Love INC in this effort to raise awareness and remedy the impact of the debt-based driver’s license suspensions that are currently affecting two million Floridians. If you'd like to lead this effort, email Justin.
