Winston-Salem Foundation Expands Focus Areas to Include Expanding Housing Access and Civic Engagement! Our friends at The Winston-Salem Foundation, a HandsOn Funding Partner, announced last month that they are expanding their Funding Priorities to advance economic mobility in Forsyth County. The Foundation has added Expanding Access to Housing and Fostering Civic Engagement & Inclusion to its existing priorities of Advancing Equity in Education and Building an Inclusive Economy. These Funding Priorities serve as guideposts for how the Foundation funds community solutions, convenes partners, and advocates for long-term change. Access to Housing Grants focus on organizations that preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities in Forsyth County. Civic Engagement & Inclusion Grants focus on organizations that bridge divides to foster community connections, shared understanding, and trust, and also strengthen resident leadership and build networks for collective action. Grant opportunities specific to Housing and Civic Engagement & Inclusion opened at the beginning of the month; applications are due June 1. Learn more on their website.

Funding Available to Increase Economic Security and Mobility for Women & Girls in Forsyth County! The Women's Fund of Winston-Salem makes annual grants of up to $20,000 for organizations building economic security for women and girls in Forsyth County. They recognize that economic security can be built through a continuum of activities, ranging from work that supports individuals currently facing systemic barriers to work that aims at removing those barriers entirely. They believe that women and girls thrive economically when they are treated with dignity, have access to resources to meet their basic needs, and receive support for economic growth.

Before applying, we'd advise you to read their newly-released Through a Gender Lens 2026: The Economic Security of Women and Girls in Forsyth County. For the first time, this report was shaped through a community-based participatory research process—centering the voices of women with lived experience. Together, they helped define what thriving looks like, identified what matters most, and shared insights that data alone cannot capture. This report offers a deeper, more grounded understanding of the challenges, and opportunities, facing women and girls in our community. We invite you to read, reflect, and consider how we can move this work forward together.

The Foundation has two grant cycles per year; the next opens on May 18th and closes on June 29th and has a focus on stable housing and empowering communities. Grants for Youth-Led Service Projects Tied to the 9/11 Day of Service Now Available! Youth Service America’s We Serve to Remember 9/11 Day of Service Grants are for organizations, schools, and youth changemakers ages 5-25 to lead service projects between September 4-September 18. Programming efforts should honor and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, their families, and those who rose in service in response to that tragedy. Grants are $1,000 each, and each project is required to engage at least 100 youth as volunteers in planning and implementing the service activities. Reflecting on the spirit of togetherness that brought people together in the days, weeks, and months after 9/11, YSA is especially looking for ideas that bring together all members of the community. With a theme of Poetry, Place, Possibility, the Foundation’s annual gathering on May 18^th from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Benton Convention Center will welcome Ada Limón, award-winning author and the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States. Limón’s poetry reminds us of our deep connection to one another and to the natural world, even in challenging and divisive times. In a keynote address and in conversation, she’ll share her unique insights on the power of engaging with the arts and with nature. Individual tickets to the Community Meeting are $25. HandsOn NWNC, Communities Thriving VISTA Member We're still looking for our next AmeriCorps VISTA member! This year, we'll be hosting a VISTA through our relationship with North Carolina Campus Engagement, and the position comes with a modest living stipend, health benefits, extensive training and professional development opportunities, and an educational award at the end of your year of service. Our VISTA will serve a year working closely with HandsOn staff to support our partner and volunteer engagement efforts, building capacity for nonprofits to effectively engage volunteers to support a wide variety of community outcomes. Crossnore Communities for Children, Multiple New Positions! Crossnore Communities for Children, a HandsOn Supporting Partner, is looking to fill multiple positions at its Winston-Salem campus. The first is a Program Support Administrator, which serves as a critical operational partner to the Chief Program Officer and the Program Leadership Team. This is a high-level administrative and operational support role - not a direct service or teaching position. The work happens behind the scenes, ensuring leaders are prepared, priorities move forward, and communication flows effectively across the organization. Salary range is $50-$58K, with full benefits.

Their Director of Adoptions plays a vital role in helping children find permanent, loving families. This position leads a dedicated team that supports children on their path to belonging, guides adoptive families through every step of the process, and ensures the highest standards of ethical and trauma-informed practice. The Director of Adoptions will bring steady leadership, emotional intelligence, and vision to a team deeply committed to helping children heal and thrive. If you are a hands-on problem solver with a passion for fixing, building, and maintaining, then they need you, too! They are also looking for a full-time Maintenance Technician I or II to ensure their facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming for children, families, and staff. In this role, your skills and dedication will directly contribute to their mission of providing a safe sanctuary of hope and healing for children and families. Lastly, they are still looking for a Ropes Course Facilitator. This position supports group programming on their low and high ropes elements (up to 40 feet).
