Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church
|
Last week as Janna and I were traveling in Europe, we stopped in Lund, Sweden to visit a friend and to see the historical astronomical clock in the Lund Cathedral. The clock, which was built in the 1420’s and restored in the 1920’s, continues to draw tourists and school groups every day at 12:00 and 3:00. At the appointed hour, the performance of the 500-year old mechanical figures begins. At the top of the clock are two horsemen jousting. They are to represent light and darkness. Curiously, they are dressed in the colors of the flags of Sweden and Denmark who have both claimed the cathedral as their own.
|
The central figure between the two spheres is the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child on her knee. At the appointed hour, two horn players on either side of the clock begin to play one of the old Christmas carols, In dulci jubilo, thus announcing the procession of the three kings and their servant presenting their gifts to the Christ child and then disappearing again into the clock.
| Lund’s astronomical clock is a wonderful testimony to the story of music at Christmas. The majesty, mystery and simplicity of music tell us of Christ’s birth. Of course, this truth is scriptural as well. In St. Luke’s gospel we read that on the night of Jesus’ birth the angels were sent to the shepherds in Bethlehem praising God in the highest heaven and peace to God’s people on earth. | Music is always an integral part of our worship at Lake of the Isles, but the Christmas season provides even more opportunities for celebrating in a variety of styles and traditions. Each worship service has a different focus, from the jubilant baroque music of the First Sunday in Advent, to the contemplative tone of the Second Sunday focusing on O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. And of course, there are the traditional characters of Saint Nicholas and Sancta Lucia, and the Sunday School Children’s program woven into the music, as well. | Join us throughout this Advent and Christmas season as we celebrate in wonder the Word made Flesh. | | |
Inspired by Christ, living and growing in faith, Lake of the Isles is a loving and open community of worship, witness, & service in God's world

First Sunday of Advent
December 1st
9:30 AM
Sanctuary

Franz Tunder (1614 – 1667) was an organist in one of the Hanseatic League’s most prominent cities, today’s Lubeck, Germany. Tunder played a formative role in the development of the choral cantata which J.S. Bach would champion a generation later. During the season of Advent, Tunder would arrange for special concerts involving additional musicians who were sponsored by the city’s business owners. The LOTI Church Choir, a string ensemble and soloists will present Tunder’s seldom performed choral cantata, Hosanna, Thou Son of David, on the First Sunday of Advent.

Second Sunday of Advent
Saint Nicholas
December 8th
9:30 AM
| |
|
The Second Sunday of Advent will be marked by the annual visit of Saint Nicholas. One of the church’s most celebrated saints, not simply of children, but by sailors and pawn-brokers as well, St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra in modern day Turkey, was an early priest in the Christian Church who died around 342 AD. Legends that surround Nicholas tell of his love for God and neighbor, especially the poor. He became known as the symbol of anonymous gift giving.
St. Nicholas Day is traditionally celebrated on December 6th. Polish your shoes, or you may only receive coal this year.

Third Sunday of Advent
Sancta Lucia & Christmas Tea
December 15th
9:30 AM
| |
304 AD during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian. According to tradition, she had decided to devote her life to God and to give her possessions to the poor. In Sweden in the late 1700’s, there were legends of a woman appearing in times of great famine distributing food to the starving. Perhaps because the name Lucia means light, and since her feast day falls on December 13th, the week that marks the darkest days of the year, these stories were in turn attributed to the goodness and generosity of St. Lucia. Prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, December 13th was the longest night in Sweden, so there was a tradition of singing and performing music through the night. This served as the origin of the early morning Lucia procession.
St. Lucia will make her lighted appearance as a part of the Third Sunday in Advent. The worship service will feature Finnish and Swedish folk and religious music presented by the Choir, soloists, and a special visit by the ASI Nyckelharpalag.

|
Following the service, please join us for our annual Christmas Tea!
Volunteers are needed for setup, serving, & cleanup. Our signup form is available in Fellowship Hall.
Items for the tea can be delivered to the church beginning Wednesday, December 11th.

Sunday School Pageant
December 22nd
9:30 AM
| |
|
The Church Choir will celebrate a Festive Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 22nd, the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The traditional service dates back to Christmas Eve 1918, when the newly appointed Dean of King’s College Cambridge, Eric Milner-White, a former army chaplain was convinced that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship and decided to create a unique service for King’s College. The format of the service with its blending of music and readings grew immediately in in popularity. Our service will include chimes, harp, Irish instruments & trumpet. Sunday School children will portray the Nativity.

Winter Art in Fellowship Hall
Paintings by Former LOTI Member Tom Maakestad
| Mille Lacs Ice Houses, 8"x24" Oil on Canvas | |
Tom Maakestad works with oil paint, oil pastel and dry pastel using regional landscapes as his main focal point. In the early morning or late afternoon, he looks for vast expanses or the complexities formed by merging land masses with light and shadow. Maakestad's color pallet is frequently limited to what he's viewing at that time of year.
The area around his parent’s farm in south central Minnesota has elements that he appreciates about this part of the country: long views from open ridge lines remind him of bus rides from his youth when valley bottoms were shrouded in fog, or sunsets that heighten the landforms and tree rows.
His work is held in many collections including the Mayo Clinic, The US Embassy in Oslo, Norway and the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
Maakestad's art will be for sale and a portion of sales will go to Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.
