Summer 2024

In the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul in Greece

“During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

Acts 16:9

Dear Michelle,

The Apostle Paul, and his traveling companions Silas, Luke and Timothy, were uncertain where they should journey next. Doors of opportunity were closing all around them. The Holy Spirit had actually barred them from preaching in the Roman territory of Asia along the eastern shore of the Aegean Sea, and the spirit of Jesus had prevented them from heading to the territory near the Black Sea. They arrived at the port of Troas in modern-day Turkey pondering what plans God had for them. During the night Paul had a vision; there stood a man of Macedonia on the other side of the Aegean Sea pleading with him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Luke, in has narration of this story in the Book of Acts, interpreted this vision as God’s call for Paul to proclaim the good news of Jesus to the Gentile world. So Paul and his companions immediately tried to cross to Macedonia, the historic kingdom of ancient Greece. There they began one of the most successful chapters in Paul’s ministry.

Greece and Greek culture would come to play a large part in Paul's writings. Five of his epistles are written to the churches in modern day Greece including, I and II Corinthians, I and II Thessalonians and Philippians. He also wrote three letters to the heads of the Greek churches, I and II Timothy and Titus. Interestingly, even though, Paul knew Hebrew, he wrote all of his letters in Greek.

Throughout the summer, I will be preaching on the stories of the Apostle Paul in Greece that are found in the Book of Acts:16-19. They provide not only a powerful witness of the early missionaries’ work and the movement of the Holy Spirit, but they also provide an interesting travelogue around the Greek cities and islands on both sides of the Aegean Sea.

Join us this summer for Wednesday Morning Bible Study at 10:00 for an introduction to the stories and for Sunday morning worship as we follow in the footsteps of Paul in Greece.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug
