LOTILink
Lenten Services at Lake of the Isles
Wednesdays at 7:00 PM
Greetings!
The distinguished author and Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor once wrote, “Full disclosure: I do not like the book of Revelation. I do not like its violence, its vindictiveness, its opaqueness, its psychotic visions, its attitude toward women, its enemy thinking, its dualistic worldview or its vacancy of love. I do not even like people who like the book of Revelation. I wish it had been left out of the Bible, as it almost was. But since it wasn’t, I’ll grant this much: if you want a beatific vision of God’s end-game for creation, there is no better place to look than the last two chapters of Revelation.”
Surprisingly, the Book of Revelation has generated only a few limited visual works. This may well be due to the fantastical imagery in the writing, and that other scenes are too graphic and terrifying. Surprisingly, when Martin Luther first translated and published the New Testament, he thought that Revelation should not have the same status or authority as the gospels or the letters of Paul or Peter. He did, however, find it curiously edifying, and the one book that was perfectly suited for illustrations. 300 years later, Thomas Jefferson wrote in his edited version of the Bible, that the Book of Revelation was “merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams.”

There is no doubt that Revelation is one of the most troubling books in the Bible, but Barbara Brown Taylor writes, it’s final vision of God’s New Heaven and New Earth is quite stunning. For the church, it also offers a vison of heavenly worship that is mirrored in our Sunday worship and hymns of praise.

Join us in person on Wednesdays in Lent at 7:00 PM as we explore the artwork inspired by the Book of Revelation. We will, as in years past, follows Marty Haugen’s Holden Evening Prayer. The service will be live-streamed on our YouTube site as well.

Isles Ensemble Benefit Concert
Sunday, March 5th
2:00 PM
The Women's Club of Minneapolis & Livestream
410 Oak Grove Street
Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church, the musical home of The Isles Ensemble will once again
co-sponsor a benefit concert for Ukraine with The Women’s Club of Minneapolis. The concert will also be available via livestream.
The ensemble will perform chamber music by Ukrainian composers & will feature guest speaker, Ambassador Eric Rubin, President, American Foreign Service Association.
All funds will be received through Lake of the Isles and distributed to three organizations:
Protez Foundation
The Protez Foundation was established in 2022 by Minnesota-based Ukrainian doctor Yakov Gradinar to provide prosthetics for Ukrainians. Protez is the Ukrainian word for prosthesis. The project's goal is to aid children, soldiers, and civilians who have lost limbs during the war, helping them obtain free quality prosthetics in the U.S. The foundation covers all financial needs, including visa fees, lodging, and the prosthetics themselves. In the US, patients are hosted by volunteers who help with orientation, logistics, and psychological support. The foundation has hosted over 82 groups of patients in the last few months, and the need is ongoing and tremendous.
The Ukrainian American Community Center
Refugee Programs
The Ukrainian American Community Center (UACC) coordinates local efforts to support refugees escaping the war in Ukraine. The center partners with the Department of Human Services and with a variety of public and private organizations to coordinate and develop refugee programs in Minnesota. They have successfully organized Back to School campaigns for refugee children, and the Adopt a Family campaign to provide mothers in need with Metro Transit passes, a mattress, a blanket, bedding, towels, and mats. Today their largest needs include emergency housing assistance, summer programs for children so mothers can continue to work, and driver's license training.
Caritas-Transcarpathia
Christian Charitable Foundation
Caritas-Transcarpathia is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that has operated in Ukraine since 1998, providing services to those with special needs. After the loss of their parents, children with special needs usually end up being locked up in mental institutions. In spite of the ongoing war, Caritas is building an assisted living facility where children will receive assistance from social workers and volunteers. This will be the first community home of its type in the region and only the second in Ukraine. It will provide decent living conditions, dignity, and quality of life for some of the most vulnerable.

Happy 338th Birthday to J. S. Bach
Before Bach’s Birthday Bash
Saturday, March 18th
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685, although some state that it was March 31. You will often see both dates side-by-side in biographies and encyclopedias. So which date is Bach’s real birthday? The simple answer is: both!

Bach’s birth was first recorded using the Julian calendar, but at the time of Bach’s death in 1750, most of Europe had started using the Gregorian calendar. First adopted by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C. for use throughout the vast Roman Empire, the Julian calendar had miscalculated the length of a year…by approximately 10 to 11 days! Most of present-day Germany switched to the Gregorian calendar in the early 18th century, but Bach’s hometown of Eisenach was still using the Julian calendar when Bach died. Once the Gregorian calendar became standard throughout most of Europe in the mid-18th century, Bach’s birthday jumped from March 21 to March 31.

Once again this year, Lake of the Isles will be hosting, Minnesota Public Radio’s Michael Barone’s annual celebration of J. S. Bach’s music on March 18th from 9AM-5PM. Before Bach’s Birthday Bash, will be a sequence of five hour-long concerts devoted primarily to music by Bach, presented at various venues in Minneapolis:

2:30-3:30 PM – Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church

4:00-5:00 PM – St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

All events are free (donations accepted) and open to the public. Join us for the entire day, or at any of the five individual destinations. The first hour’s program will be broadcast live on Your Classical Minnesota Public Radio network stations (KSJN-99.5FM in the Twin Cities).
St. Patrick's Day Worship
Sunday, March 19th
10:30 AM
Sanctuary
Many Roman Catholic and Protestant churches celebrate the life of St. Patrick as a missionary to Ireland. At sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He himself admitted that up to this point he cared little for God. He escaped after six years, returned to his family in southwest Britain, and began to prepare for ordained ministry. He later returned to Ireland, this time to serve as bishop and missionary. He made his base in the north of Ireland and from there made many missionary journeys with much success.
We will celebrate the missionary life of St. Patrick in our morning worship service on Sunday, March 19th. Irish music will be performed by Tom Klein, a master uilleann piper. The uilleann pipes are a unique Irish bagpipe. Instead of standing and playing, performers sit and pump a bellow with their elbow. He will perform for the Sunday School as well.
