All Saints Sunday
November 5th
| | During the course of the pandemic, I spent considerable time doing genealogy on my Norwegian family. In the process, I discovered that there were actually a number of Danes in the family tree. They were educated in Denmark and then were sent out to serve as pastors and regional judges in Norway. This year Janna I traveled along the west coast of Norway to the birthplace of one of these early pastors in the small village of Kvernes. The old wooden stave church, which was once dated back to the early middle ages, is positioned on a bluff high above the fjord. A place is reserved in the back of the church for lepers who were still a part of daily life in the middle ages. The interior of the church is painted with great floral patterns and murals from the Bible which were sadly white washed during a particularly pietistic period when churches were not to be decorated. Oddly, the wooden altar with its image of the Virgin Mary and her mother St. Anne from the Roman Catholic period still stands in the front of the church. |
In the late 1800’s, as the community grew, the congregation chose to build a new white clapboard church in close proximity to the original. Unlike many churches in Norway, however, the congregation decided to keep the old wooden church. Today it is an important historical center. Cruise ships from around the world sailing up and down the Norwegian coast stop near by to bring nearly 10,000 visitors a year to the remote stave church at Kvernes. It is a window into the past. During the summer months, scheduled concerts and readings provide a glimpse of the old church life for the visitors and community. Of course, churches aren’t intended to be museums. They are intended to be places where visitors enter into a living conversation with God and in communion with their neighbors.
|
All Saints Sunday, which we celebrate this Sunday, November 5th is the church’s own annual visit to the places and people of the past who have offered their own glimpse into the faith and have been in conversation with God. We remember their names as a part of our worship service and light a candle to celebrate the burning flame of faith that they have ignited within us. Special music will be performed by Paul McKenzie and the members of Hymnus Anglicus.
Blessed be the saints and their memory among us.

Remembrance Sunday
Sunday, November 12th
9:30AM
Sanctuary
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, to bring to an end the First World War. Our nation has recalled that moment on this day through the decades. And now over 100 years later, we remember lives sacrificed in the service of our country, and those traumatized and injured in battle. Remembrance Sunday is one of the liturgical services for honoring veterans. It allows for a brief time of music, silence, wreath laying and a call to remember the fallen. Our service will feature the music of trumpeter Ben Alle in memory of Bruce Kuehn

"American Grammy Award-winning composer and beloved Minnesota artist, Stephen Paulus premiered his first opera, The Village Singer, in 1979, to great acclaim. This comic, one-act chamber work, rich with Paulus’ lush hymn settings, speaks to the heart of the mission of Raison d’Être Opéra, as it tells the poignant story of Candace Whitcomb, the church choir soloist whose established reputation is threatened by the emergence of gifted young soprano. The Benefit Reading, featuring soprano Lucy Thrasher in the title role, along with a distinguished cast of local singers, is intended to raise funds for a full production in early 2024."
~ Gary Briggle, RDO Executive Director

Pradervand shows that the practice of blessing has the power to create more than just a momentary change. It unleashes tangible benefits throughout your entire life—through your daily interactions, your relationships, and how the laws of positive expectations and unconditional love can open the doors to a more peaceful world.
