Greetings from beautiful and scenic southern Connecticut!
I'm on retreat with my fellow clergy folks from Hudson River Presbytery at Mercy-by-the-Sea for a few days of self-care and respite. I really appreciate being a part of a Presbytery that recognizes the importance of care and support for clergy. For the most part, I really enjoy my colleagues so looking forward to our time together in such a beautiful part of the country (I've not really spent much time in New England). I plan on spending much of my "downtime" sorting out some worship planning through Advent, clearing my emails, finishing a keynote I'm giving next month, and taking as many naps as possible :)
This upcoming Sunday, we will spend our time in worship celebrating Reformation Sunday. It is always the last Sunday in October, marking the occasion in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. In addition to rich traditions around theology and practice of religion, the history of Reformers invite us to the constant revelations that the Holy Spirit has revealed to people of faith across the last half a Millenia. This year we'll be looking at Barmen Declaration, how it came to be, and how the German churches responded to the rise of Christian Nationalism and fascism in 1930s Germany. In recognition of the Scottish heritage that brought the Presbyterian way of being church to America, I invite you to join me in wearing some tartan/plaid!
Finally, if you're eligible to vote, don't forget to make your plan to do so over the next couple of weeks! Early voting begins on Saturday!
Okay that's a lot, see you Sunday!
