Pastor's Page
Have you felt the collective sigh of relief that it feels like spring seems like it's on this way. As much as I love winter, feeling the sunset after 5pm will be the thing that heals me (your pastor is way more joyful in the spring so get ready!).
This Sunday's lectionary takes us to two instances of water being offered to a thirsty people. As we traverse this season of Lent, dwelling in the wilderness with Jesus and the ancient Israelites, I'm definitely struck by they places where water shows up, when, or how you least expect it to. It makes me think of surprises, which theoretically I hate (I'm a planner!) but in practice I'm really used to. I'm curious, where have you experienced surprises when you've least expected them? What was your response? Do you have the ability to pivot when necessary? Is that something you're even willing to do?
I feel like being your pastor right now feels like a surprise, in the best way possible. Turning on the news is certainly some sort of exercise in surprise. The things that anchor me in my feelings of surprise and uncertainty are the knowledge I have of Christ's love for us all and perhaps a certainty that we do in fact have everything that we need to survive and that we must live into that certainty.
As I'm writing this I'm being greeted by the stench of a skunk in the front room. I know it's outside, but it really feels like a reminder that we are surrounded by nature and creatures who care not for our sensibilities or preferences (I really hope this creature finds another place to be by the end of the week) or timelines. So much of the world is out of our grasp, where can we look for, and ask for help (and water perhaps) in the places that are within our reach?
I'll see y'all on Sunday. Don't forget to turn your analogue clocks back if you still have any in your house (I have 4!!)
In deep anticipation and a teeny bit of hope,
Ekama
