Here's A HEALTH TIP from Rose!
Good dental care can reduce our risk of Cardiovascular Disease
According to a comprehensive literature review by the NIH over the past 25
years, there is a strong association between periodontal disease and
cardiovascular disease. Atrial fibrillation has been associated with high
levels of dental plaque. Chronic dental gum disease appears to lead to the
release of inflammatory substances into the blood stream that can cause a
buildup of plaque in our artery walls. Other risk factors for cardiovascular
disease of course are diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol,
smoking, obesity, insufficient exercise and unhealthy diet. Poverty and poor
access to dental care are important causative factors as well.
The good news is that with conscientious dental care we can reduce our
risk of cardiovascular disease and possibly improve blood flow through the
arteries! Periodontal dentists recommend three ways of cleaning the teeth
and gums, at least twice per day. Start with flossing. Floss down into the
pockets of gum tissue on the sides of every tooth. If there is bleeding that
means inflammation. Don’t give up flossing. Gums will get healthier in time.
Next use a Waterpik to continue to clean teeth and gums. Lastly, use an
electric toothbrush and toothpaste to brush the teeth. Some prefer electric
toothbrushes with a round head and others the traditional toothbrush
shape. After you start brushing in this three-part manner, you will notice
your teeth feel incredibly clean. It’s very likely that you will also be reducing
your risk for heart disease and hypertension! Good job!
