POWAB Recognizes March as Women's History Month!
Did You Know? Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week . . .
Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.
In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8, 1980, as
National Women’s History Week.

A Tribute to Black Women in Social Justice
Such is the Power of Black Women!
Despite the courage displayed by Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Jo Ann Robinson, Black people in America collectively, have not been totally “let go”. More than 150 years after the end of slavery, racial inequality is still a reality in America. Consequently, we celebrated April 20, 2021. In spite of what our eyes saw, we still thought it would take a miracle for a police officer to be convicted of murdering a Black man in broad daylight! The miracle of the George Floyd verdict was not like the miracles the Lord gave to Moses. The miracle of the George Floyd verdict appeared in the form of a Black Woman, Darnella Frazier! The Lord gifted Ms. Frazier, who was only 17 years of age at the time, with the courage to take her cellphone and record Mr. Floyd’s murder, despite a police officer threat to tase her! Ms. Frazier’s great display of courage forced the state of Minnesota and America to acknowledge Black Lives Matter!

POWAB United Through Faith
|
In 2008 the District of Columbia, Department of Health, HIV/AIDS Administration invited clergy and lay leaders from various places of worship and community-based organizations to a meeting to discuss the establishment of a union with the Department of Health to prevent and treat HIV/STI’s. Today this union is known as the Places of Worship Advisory Board (POWAB). Since 2008 POWAB has grown in its capacity to address HIV/STI’s prevention and treatment as well as whole person health.
POWAB members are united through faith. Members have individually answered the call to act in agreement to maintain and develop an advisory board comprised of clergy and community leaders to provide health and wellness services and resources to promote health in mind, body, and spirit.
Within the membership individuals who practice Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Scientology unite through their faith to address the health and wellness of the communities they serve. Faith is important to all of us. Our faith illuminates a pathway in times of darkness and gives us strength in times of weakness. Our faith has kept us thus far and our faith will lead us on.
We recognize that everyone has his or her own faith. Faith is a gift from God and each of us practices our faith in diverse ways. Our individual resources are limited however, together we put our faith into action to effectively address many of the healthcare needs of residents in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and beyond. The General Body currently meets at 12:00 noon on the second Friday of every month via Zoom.
If you can respect the faith of others while practicing your own and you have a desire to enhance the health and wellness of your community, consider uniting with us and becoming a member.
For information regarding POWAB membership contact Rev. Dana (Salia) Mitchell via email at revsalia@yahoo.com.

Muslim Mindful Moment
[2.41] And believe in what I have revealed, verifying what you have which was revealed before, and be not the first to deny it, neither sell my signs for a small price, and me alone, should be your concern.
Verse 41 is saying we should believe in the revelation of the Qur'aan and believe in the scriptures which the people in Arabia already had before the Qur'aan. Muhammad did not claim to be the first Prophet, but one of the Prophets of the same Lord as the Lord of the Children of Isra'eel. So for all the wrong that exists in the world, don't despair. Do something about it! Get involved! And know that your reward will be with the Creator!
From Al-Qur'aan Al-Kareem (The Qur'aan, Generous) Surah Al Imran Ayat 2.41
