The Nonprofit Connection

Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact

Dear Amy,

As my term on the HandsOn Board draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on so many cherished memories. My journey with HandsOn began with an invitation from my dear friend, Dr. Renee Rogers.  Renee suggested that joining HandsOn would be a way to connect with the community and build my capacity as a leader.  Little did I realize the profound impact this experience would have on me.

I enrolled in their Board Basics workshop facilitated by Karl Yena. Karl's palpable passion for empowering nonprofits equipped me with the fundamental knowledge and tools needed to be an effective board member. Later, my participation in Project Blueprint deepened my understanding of board members' pivotal role in advancing nonprofit impact.

Then, I completed the Women’s Emerging Leaders and Nonprofit Essentials program.  The WEL members and HandsOn staff became an extended family for me as I pursued a new leadership role in my career and navigated the unexpected loss of my husband. Finally, serving as Chair and Past-Chair of the Board has allowed me to engage with remarkable individuals and contribute to meaningful projects, leaving an indelible mark on my personal and professional growth.

My transformative experience with HandsOn has left an everlasting imprint on me. As the year closes, I want to encourage each of you to renew your commitment to HandsOn, either by becoming or renewing as a Supporting Partner, or making an individual financial contribution, as the dividends of your investment are sure to surpass your wildest imagination.

Thank you for your unwavering support, and may you all have a joyous holiday season!

Yours in Service,

Torry

Working with Leaders in Grassroots Communities

Thursday, January 18, 1 pm to 4 pm

NEW! Location: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)

Our fifth session in our 2023-2024 Nonprofit Essentials series provides a strong introduction to the basics of working with small, grassroots organizations and neighborhood leaders. As we all look to address systemic issues, the concept of asset-based community development, alongside with collective impact and place-based initiatives, is becoming more and more important to effectively meet the challenges of our missions. Paula McCoy, our faciiltator, is the current Director of the Partnership for Prosperity, which aims to empower low-income communities and individuals to achieve economic stability and opportunity. She has more than 30 years of experience in the non-profit sector.

Nonprofit Essentials is a series of ten courses designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector. Offered in partnership with Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement, Nonprofit Essentials classes cover a range of topics essential to the governance, management, and operation of nonprofits and are taught primarily by WFU faculty, staff or alums. Classes are held for a half-day once a month from September to June of the following year. You can sign up for the entire series or register for just individual classes.

Engagement Spotlight

Wake Forest University's Office of Civic and Community Engagement

A diverse group of volunteers gather to display their handmade, recycled cardboard ornamentts.

As part of their mission to mobilize the people-power of Wake Forest University, their Office of Civic and Community Engagement worked with us in November to host a Board Speed Dating event inside the new Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. A variety of faculty and staff from across the campus had a chance to learn more about local organizations and ways that they could get involved as board members or as other key volunteer leaders. By all accounts, great connections were made:

“It was lovely—lots of info and connecting in a structured format which I love as an introvert.”

“Good way to hear about a variety of nonprofits in Winston-Salem”

“It was great to talk/learn more about all of the services in community—you never know who will need or be of assistance.”

We hope that sharing these engagement stories will encourage you to consider participating in a Speed Dating event, submitting a service project, or responding to other engagement events when our request emails hit your inbox! And if you want to partner with us to host a group service project or other civic engagement event for your employee team, civic, school, or church group, please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey!

Participate in BoardSource's Current Leading with Intent Survey!

You are invited to participate in BoardSource's Leading with Intent survey, which is BoardSource's signature study that tracks and analyzes trends in nonprofit board leadership. They've been conducting the study since 1994 — and it’s widely recognized as the preeminent survey on board practices. This year's survey will highlight leadership transitions, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the board, and the impact of COVID-19 on board culture.

The information gathered is used to produce reports, articles, and trainings on critical issues facing nonprofit leaders--and informs each of the board trainings that we offer here at HandsOn. With each new edition of Leading with Intent, they're able to share relevant insights with the nonprofit community, leaders, researchers, and members of the media to help guide timely governance conversations within the sector.

In preparation for the next edition of the report — which will be published in 2024 — they would love for your organization’s chief executive and board chair to all participate in the survey.
