CONNECT WITH PACIFICA

Hello City,

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this year San Mateo County will hold a series of free events throughout the month promoting the theme of "Share Hope Together". The act of sharing, whether that be sharing hope, stories, time, resources, or experiences, can serve as a powerful tool in mental health support. You may be interested in doing even more to support those who are struggling. San Mateo County Libraries has launched a series of free trainings and workshops for members of the public. They are now offering "Be Sensitive, Be Brave for Suicide Prevention" and "Mental Health First Aid Training". Follow the links for more information.

Sincerely,

Kevin Woodhouse

City Manager

LOCAL & REGIONAL NEWS

FAA Noise Policy Review

Are you disturbed by airplane noise? Is it affecting your sleep or other health issues? The FAA is currently gathering feedback from communities impacted by aircraft noise to:

  1. Understand the health impacts of noise and sleep disturbance, and
  2. Consider new guidelines for measuring noise to better reflect the experiences.

The SFO Roundtable, a volunteer organization of elected officials in San Mateo and SF Counties working to reduce airplane and airport noise, has written a response letter to the FAA, but encourages cities and individuals to write letters specific to their jurisdiction's issues. Councilmember Boles, who represents the City of Pacifica on the Roundtable, is organizing a group to work on Pacifica's response letter and is hosting a virtual workshop September 8th at 2pm to collaborate on the letter. If you would like to participate, email Councilmember Boles for the meeting information. For those who cannot make the scheduled time, there will be a shared document where comments can be added electronically for consideration.

This is described as a once in a lifetime opportunity to impact federal policy related to noise and health impacts.

To learn more about these issues and in preparation for this workshop, please take the time to watch the video and/or read the education materials for "Noise 101" prepared by the Roundtable.

As the summer travel season wraps up, the Pacifica Police Department reminds drivers to stay safe and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family by buckling up, avoiding distractions when behind the wheel, following the speed limit, and not driving while impaired.

To help keep our community safe, the Pacifica Police Department will have additional officers on patrol from August 16 through Labor Day weekend (September 4) looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The additional efforts to prevent impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over.

In addition to these increased patrols, the Pacifica Police Department will hold DUI Checkpoints on August 19 from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM and again on September 8 from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM at undisclosed locations within the city of Pacifica.

Driving while impaired is not just from alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products may also impair. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive. Do your part to help keep our roads safe.

If you see someone driving impaired, call 9-1-1.

Founded in 1964, Pacifica Sea Lions is the City of Pacifica's oldest and largest swim team. Now a private 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, PSL's continued mission is to strengthen our community through the positive development of local youth in competitive swim training and instruction. PSL's swim programs encourage the development of both individuals & athletes through goal setting, disciplined participation, and performance improvement.

Come celebrate the Pacifica Sea Lions at their 60th Anniversary Party on Saturday September 16th 11am-4pm.

Survey on Plan Bay Area 2050+ Open Now

How has daily life changed, in terms of getting around, and where you work and live? What has gotten better, and where is there still room for improvement? What are your concerns for the environment and the economy? Staff from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments need your input on how life in the Bay Area has changed as the region emerges from the pandemic.

Complete the survey now.

Your input will help staff develop the Plan Bay Area 2050+ Draft Blueprint. Plan Bay Area 2050+ is the limited and focused update to Plan Bay Area 2050, the adopted long-range regional plan. Plan Bay Area 2050+ will refine select plan strategies to integrate the lessons of the last three years.

The survey also will help inform the development of Transit 2050+, a parallel long-range planning effort that will produce a first-of-its-kind plan to re-envision the future of the public transit network in the nine-county Bay Area, as well as the expenditure plan for a potential transportation revenue measure. The revenue measure is key in advancing implementation of Plan Bay Area.

The deadline to participate in the survey is Thursday, September 7, 2023.
