Recognizing Our People in the Community

Preston Chaney, an employee at the Inn at Saint Mary's, and Tony Fitts, Holladay's Chief Lending Officer, are members of 100 Black Men of Greater South Bend . The South Bend chapter was granted its charter in 2009 from the national organization that was formed in 1986.

100 Black Men's mission is to improve the quality of life within the community and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all African Americans. Their efforts focus in five key areas: mentoring youth, education, health and wellness, economic development, and youth leadership development.

Some of the organization's activities include: a bi-monthly youth mentoring program that supports 35+ elementary and high school aged students; summer camps including Summer Literacy Camp and Innovation Thinkers Camp; sponsoring local high school students' attendance at a college scholarship fair in Chicago, which has benefitted those students with over $400,000 in merit-based scholarship awards over the past five years; and a partnership with Memorial Hospital that conducts weekly blood pressure monitoring/screening at five local barber shops.

100 Black Men of Greater South Bend holds an Annual Gala Event that serves as the groups' major fundraising event of the year. The gala generates donations to support the group's activities. This year's event is a celebration of the group's 10th anniversary.
