Volume 17, Issue 1| January 2024
Dear Amy,
Welcome to the new year! And, instead of what would have been a typical snow day, today, my daughter is enjoying a "severe storm" day, because nothing says "January" like severe thunderstorm and tornado watches! But I digress. ;)
HandsOn accomplished so much in 2023, and our staff is planning to celebrate this week, even as we look forward to what's ahead in this shiny new year. Of course, what is most immediately in view is our upcoming Martin Luther King Day of Service Read-In event, scheduled for the first Saturday *after* the holiday weekend on the campus of Winston-Salem State University, from 10 am to Noon on Saturday, January 20th. Together with our other traditional planning partner for this event, Wake Forest University, we're excited to welcome back children, aged 4-10, and volunteers to participate in a variety of activity stations dedicated to Dr. King's legacy of service, literacy, self-sufficiency, and civil rights. If you are interest in signing up a child to participate, or volunteering as a "Reading Buddy" that morning, please check out the information you'll find later in this newsletter. We were excited to get a shout-out about the event in a recent Points of Light blog post!
The start of 2024 also means we're getting closer to our annual Forsyth County County Governor's Volunteer Service Awards breakfast on May 7th. This incredible, feel-good event honors the "best of the best" of local volunteers, but we can't share these inspirational stories unless we hear them from YOU, first! There are categories not just for individuals, but for businesses (large or small!), civic groups, and faith-based organizations as well. Nominations are due February 9th, and you'll find more details below as well.
Excited, as always, to start the new year in partnership with all of you!
Amy
Amy Lytle
Executive Director
ED note: We're booking our guest columnists for 2024, so if want to share your love of HandsOn with our network, please let Amy know! It's pretty painless!

2023-2024 Nonprofit Essentials
Working with Leaders in Grassroots Communities

NEW! Location: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)
Our fifth session in our 2023-2024 Nonprofit Essentials series provides a strong introduction to the basics of working with small, grassroots organizations and neighborhood leaders. As we all look to address systemic issues, the concept of asset-based community development, alongside with collective impact and place-based initiatives, is becoming more and more important to effectively meet the challenges of our missions. Paula McCoy, our faciiltator, is the current Director of the Partnership for Prosperity, which aims to empower low-income communities and individuals to achieve economic stability and opportunity. She has more than 30 years of experience in the non-profit sector.
Nonprofit Essentials is a series of ten courses designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector. Offered in partnership with Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement, Nonprofit Essentials classes cover a range of topics essential to the governance, management, and operation of nonprofits and are taught primarily by WFU faculty, staff or alums. MLK Day of Service Read-In, 1.20.24!
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service promotes Dr. King's message of service, equality, and non-violence. For more than a decade, we've honored his legacy with our annual "Read-In" event. This year, we're excited to host the event on the campus of Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, January 20, from 10 am to Noon!
Along with our core partners at Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and other local colleges and nonprofits, this event pairs children from kindergarten to 5th grade with a "Reading Buddy" (typically, a college student or other "near peer" volunteer) who will lead them through various educational activities. At the event, each child will receive one age-appropriate book and one new civil rights-themed book.📚❤️ The event is engaging, fun, and helps builds connections while providing our participants the experience of being on a college campus.
Let's celebrate Dr. King's life and promote his message about civil rights, literacy, and the importance of community service! The deadline to sign-up to volunteer is January 15th (spots will fill quickly once students are back on campus after the holiday break!) If you have a young person aged 4-10 (or a group of young people) who you think would benefit from participating, you can still sign them up, too! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Victoria TODAY!

2023-2024 Nonprofit Essentials
Fund Development
| |
Note--TWO LEVELS AVAILABLE!
Basics: Thursday, February 15, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Advanced: Thursday, February 22, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Location for Both Sessions: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)
We've again split our sixth topic in the Nonprofit Essentials series into two different sessions, based on the experience of participants. The "Basics" course on February 15th is designed to meet the real-world needs and challenges nonprofit organizations face every day related to fundraising. The course is taught in an active learning style and includes case studies and a take-away project, making the learning experience both substantive and enjoyable. This session offers a complete overview of development functions, featuring the most current information and techniques, and will provide an overview of skills, strategies, and program components for individuals with zero to four years of fundraising experience.
The "Advanced Fund Development" class on February 22nd will focus on current and prospective donor research strategies and techniques, securing the gift, and relationship development. Prior to class, participants will be asked to share at least two samples from their organization of the following: case for support, direct mail appeal package, major gift proposal, stewardship and cultivation plan, communications plan, gift acceptance policy, newsletter/impact reports, annual report, your job description, volunteer and or board member job description. Please note: If you do not know about, or do not have the above examples readily available to share, you should probably take the Basics class instead.
Both sessions will be led by Michelle Speas who brings over 20 years’ experience in Japan, Africa and the United States to her current role as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of the Family Services Foundation. Family Services, one of the Triad’s largest nonprofit organizations and an anchor agency in Forsyth County, is committed to strengthening the safety, security, and well-being of women, children and families in our community. For the majority of her career, Michelle has worked as a development officer and has been a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) for over 15 years.

Nominate an Amazing Volunteer for a Governor's Award By Feb. 9th!
|
In the blur of the holiday season, we know that you might have missed that the nomination forms for the 2023-2024 Forsyth County Governor's Volunteer Service Awards are now open! Each year, dozens of the "best of the best" volunteers from across the county are recognized for the efforts they make to improve the lives of our neighbors and the wider community. But we can't share these meaningful stories unless we hear them from you--and we need to do that by February 9th! Nominating a volunteer for these awards is a great way to not only honor their service and recognize their efforts, but it's also a wonderful opportunity to highlight your organization and the impact of your mission.
Recently, a partner shared that they ended up recruiting two new board members and raising $5,000 as a result of nominating a volunteer for these awards! That's a pretty good return on what should be an investment of no more than an hour of your time! Also, remember that every nominee gets to attend the awards breakfast for FREE! This year, the breakfast will once again be at Novant Health's Forsyth Medical Center's Conference Center on the morning of May 7, 2024. Individual tickets are now on sale for $35, and table and event sponsorships start at just $300!
If you'd like some guidance on how best to craft your compelling nomination for these meaningful and competitive awards, or to learn more about sponsoring the event, please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey. You can learn more about this program on our website.

Engagement Spotlight
Salemtowne Leadership Team
| |
|
As part of their multi-year relationship with HandsOn, we were honored to engage the core leaders of Salemtowne in a "hands on" service activity just before the holiday break. Partnering with Senior Services' newly-expanded Willliams Adult Day Center inside the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, these leaders came together as a team to create holiday goodie bags for other, long-term volunteers as well as decorate holiday ornaments. Here's just some of their positive comments:
“It was great to see the Intergenerational Center for Arts & Wellness. I have never been to the Williams Adult Day Center before," and “Enjoyed creating goodie bags for other volunteers!”
We hope that sharing these engagement stories will encourage you to consider planning a similar event for your leadership team, submitting a service project, participating in a Speed Dating event, or responding to other engagement opportunities when our request emails hit your inbox! (Be on the lookout for an email soon about an upcoming Speed Dating event!) If you want to partner with us to organize a group service project or other civic engagement event for your employee team, civic, school, or church group, please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey!

Resources Available to Help Spread the Word About Medicaid Expansion!
As you should know, NC finally expanded Medicaid last month, and while more than 272,000 of our neighbors signed up, estimates are that 300,000 more are eligible! (View this Medicaid expansion dashboard from the NC Department of Health and Human Services for more details.) Since most of these new and potential recipients are already clients of different nonprofits, you have an important role in helping to spread the word! Many thanks to our friends at the NC Center for Nonprofits for the head's up!
Please share this information widely, especially with clients who may now be eligible to apply!

IRS Increases Mileage Rate for 2024!
With a new year comes a new mileage reimbursement rate for employees! The new business mileage rate is 67 cents per mile for (up from 65.5 cents per mile in 2023). Many nonprofits use this rate when reimbursing their employees for work-related driving. Please note: The volunteer mileage rate – the amount that volunteers who drive on behalf of your organization can deduct on their individual taxes – remains at 14 cents per mile and can literally only be changed by an act of Congress. There have been efforts to make this happen in recent years, but nothing has been passed.
