October is Disability Employment Awareness Month

ABLE Staff, volunteer and program participant

"In Canada, approximately 8 million individuals aged 15 and over live with one or more disabilities that limit their daily activities. From this population, 41% have the ability to work if they had access to a fully inclusive labour market. (2017 Canadian Survey on Disability) Despite progress, this disparity reveals that significant barriers remain prevalent. Much work is still needed to fully integrate people with disabilities into our society, especially in equal access to employment opportunities."

ABLE2 Executive Director Heather Lacey shares her insights on Disability Employment Awareness in her latest ED blog here.

Cody's Journey of Growth

Cody, ABLE2 APSW Program User

"When you first meet Cody, his smile and positive disposition make it clear that he’s surrounded by a lot of love and care in his life. He has a loving and supportive family and a wonderful community at the Journey Home, the group home where he currently resides. But like many individuals with unique challenges, Cody has his hurdles to overcome. Going to work, staying consistent with self-care routines, and keeping his life organized have been all too overwhelming for him."

Thank you Ernest Tannis and the University of Ottawa Common Law Class of 1974!

ernest tannis

We are thrilled to share that the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Class of 1974 has donated over $3,000 to ABLE2 in honor of Ernest Tannis!

Spearheaded by Janice Payne and Sharon Anderson-Olmstead, this heartfelt gesture celebrates Ernest's dedication in organizing their class reunions, and his impactful work to the legal profession and the disability community through ABLE2's Reach Legal Referral Services.

Thank you Ernest for your efforts in opening doors to justice for countless individuals with disabilities, inspiring those you’ve helped and your colleagues. Cheers!

We are counting on your support

2024 has been a particularly difficult year for ABLE2. The economic recovery from the pandemic has led to increased costs, heightened competition for funding, and many in our community facing tough financial decisions.

Despite these challenges, we remain committed to delivering our core services to people with disabilities in our community. But we still need your help to reduce our deficit and end the year on a more positive note.

The generosity and compassion of our supporters like you have always been the backbone of our success. We need your help now more than ever to ensure that we can keep providing these vital services and make a difference in lives of those we serve.

Donate today and help us to support individuals with disabilities to build lives of meaning and joy for the next 50 years.

Upcoming GROW Educational Session

ABLE2 GROW Educational Series: Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities: Perspectives from the Bench and Adjudicators. Wednesday, November 27, 2024 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. In partnership with the Ottawa Community Foundation

Join us for another GROW Educational Series webinar on Advocacy for People with Disabilities - Perspectives from the Bench and Adjudicators on November 27, 2024, from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM EST.

Persons with disabilities face unique challenges navigating the justice system. These challenges can pose difficulties for legal representatives advocating on behalf of persons with disabilities and are especially difficult for persons with disabilities who are self-represented.

Whether you are representing a person with a disability, or you are a self-presented person with a disability, ABLE2 invites you to join us for a virtual panel discussion featuring judges and adjudicators who regularly decide cases in the courts and tribunals.
