The Nonprofit Connection

Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact

Dear Amy,

As we say goodbye to the last days of summer and get ready to welcome a new season, it is now time for me to say goodbye to my AmeriCorps VISTA service year with HandsOn NWNC. It's hard to believe that it has been a full year since I started on this journey and I have learned and done so much!

Throughout my year of service I have learned about the Winston-Salem community and all the great people who continue to make our community strong. Before my year of service, I did not know much about local nonprofits. By participating in HandsOn NWNC's Nonprofit Essentials classes, my knowledge about nonprofits has grown. The classes have taught me the foundations of how a nonprofit works and how to run one successfully. As I continue my journey in the nonprofit sector, I look forward to putting to use all that I have learned during my time with HandsOn.

Yours in Service,

Victoria

HandsOn NWNC

2023-2024 VISTA Member

Wake Forest University's Office of Civic and Community Engagement

Editor's Note: We will miss having Victoria on our team and hope that she'll find a great new position with one of our local partners! Due to unexpected circumstances, HandsOn will not be hosting a VISTA next year and will be exploring new ways to support our partners and our GetConnected volunteer portal. Stay tuned!

New Session!

Navigation TOUGH Conversations

DATE: Thursday, August 15, 10:00 am to 11:00 am

LOCATION: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St. (see map)

The toughest thing about tough conversations is that they are tough. They may be hard, but they are necessary and give us and others a chance to learn, improve, and move on. Poorly handling tough conversations —or not handling them at all – creates problems for us at work and in life. In this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn foundational skills for navigating tough conversations with skill and grace.
  • Discover and practice using the TOUGH model as a guide.
  • Understand how to handle deflection or negative reactions which may sometimes occur.
  • Be able to apply this information to increase comfort and success with these conversations personally and to guide others in their organizations.

The session is being offered by Leslie Speas of InfluenceHR Consulting, a Human Resources/Talent Development consulting firm based in Winston-Salem (and a HandsOn Consulting Partner.) Leslie has worked with a number of different industries including financial services, manufacturing, technology, retail, healthcare, and nonprofits. She is passionate about helping people meet their God-given potential and helping organizations facilitate a culture of engagement and well-being.

COST: FREE! Water and light refreshments will be available. Coffee can be purchased at Generations Cafe, located just inside the entrance to the building. Contact Kathy Davis for more information.

Project Blueprint Board Leadership Training

DATE: Consecutive Wednesdays beginning September 18-October 16, 2024

LOCATION: Zoom and TWO in-person sessions at Senior Services (see map)

Project Blueprint is back--in a slightly different format and design for 2024! For decades, nonprofit boards have not reflected the diversity of the communities they serve. The goal of our Project Blueprint Board Leadership Training is designed to prepare people of color to serve effectively on nonprofit boards, thereby increasing board diversity and organizational impact. The program design closely follows the book, Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards, published by BoardSource, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to increasing nonprofit board governance. The program also helps match participants to a board or board committee through a nonprofit speed dating event and provides a stipend so that participants can continue to invest in their professional development after graduating from the program.

Designed for applicants who have no prior board experience, Project Blueprint participants will:

  • Attend an orientation, four training sessions, and participate in the capstone board speed dating event. The majority of the sessions will be held via Zoom, except for the session on September 25 and the Speed Dating event on October 16, both of which will be held in-person. (View the detailed scheduled and session topics online.)

  • Create an action plan that defines their personal professional development goals.

  • Receive a professional development stipend of $1,000 to implement the goals/activities identified in their action plan.

Project Blueprint is open to Forsyth County residents who are people of color and interested in serving on a nonprofit board. Participants must agree to the attendance, stipend, and reporting requirements. Current and previous participants of other HandsOn stipended programs are ineligible. Please visit our website for more details and application instructions or contact Kathy Davis for more information about the program. ONLY SIX SLOTS ARE AVAILBALE SO APPLY TODAY!

2024-2015 Nonprofit Essentials Series Premier!

Governance

DATE: Thursday, September 19, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Location: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)

Kicking off our 15th season of Nonprofit Essentials series in 2024-2025 is our Governance class, which provides a practical look at nonprofit governance, including organizational life cycles, legal framework and compliance issues, the role of the board in general oversight and duties, and building an effective board. The class is taught by Barbara Lentz, an innovative advisor, teacher, and attorney who has been active in the nonprofit and philanthropy sector her entire career.  Barbara brings real-life experiences and scenarios to her work, advising nonprofits to think creatively and work collaboratively to solve problems. Barbara serves on various nonprofit and social enterprise boards, including the National Advisory Council of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and co-founded Forsyth Backpack Program, which partners with public schools and local nonprofits to provide supplemental food to food-insecure children in the community.  She is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Nonprofit Essentials is a series of ten courses that, for fifteen years, has strengthened the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector. Offered in partnership since its inception with Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement, Nonprofit Essentials classes cover a range of topics essential to the governance, management, and operation of nonprofits and are good for those new to the sector, occupying a new position within a nonprofit, or wanting to refine/refresh their skills. Classes are taught primarily by Wake Forest faculty, administrators, and alum. Participants who complete all classes will receive a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University, Office of Civic and Community Engagement, and HandsOn NWNC.

Classes are held for a half-day once a month from September to June of the following year and meets in-person at the NEW Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. You can sign up for the entire series or register for just individual classes. Below are the topics that are included in the series, and their tentative dates. Registration for all classes is now open on our website, and a separate email will be sent in September. Got questions? Please contact Kathy Davis.

HandsOn NWNC Extends Volunteer Engagement Support to Guilford County!

Earlier this month, the Board of Directors of fellow Points of Light Global Network member, The Volunteer Center of the Triad, announced their intention to wind down their operations over the course of the year. This brings to a close a more than 60 year history of successfully engaging volunteers and supporting nonprofits in Guilford County and surrounding communities to our east.

HandsOn has been honored to work with their board leadership and other Guilford County stakeholders, including the Guilford Nonprofit Consortium, to extend volunteer and corporate engagement services to nonprofit parters and volunteers previously served by The Volunteer Center. Recently, Amy and Kelvis Johnson, The Volunteer Center's board chair, were interviewed by Fox8 about this transition of services, and the opportunity to reimagine what volunteer engagement might look like in Guilford County in the future. You can read the full press release release here. We'll be sharing more details with our wider network later this fall.
