Volume 17, Issue 3| March 2024
Dear Amy,
Today, I'm writing to share my utmost excitement about returning to the board of HandsOn NWNC, part of the 2024 board class that includes another returning board member, Daisy Rodriguez, and first-timer, Dr. Alexa Edwards. It is truly an honor to serve alongside such dedicated individuals committed to making a positive impact in our community.
My previous tenure on the board was incredibly rewarding, and I am eager to continue contributing my time, skills, and passion towards our shared mission of fostering volunteerism and addressing local needs. Together, I am confident that we can accomplish even greater things for the betterment of our community.
One of the ways that HandsOn helps to foster volunteerism is by organizing Forsyth County's Governor's Volunteer Service Awards each spring. This year, I'm pleased to report that HandsOn will be honoring a near-record number of nominees at the breakfast scheduled for May 7th at Forsyth Medical Center's Conference Center. Big Brothers Big Sisters has sponsored this event in the past, and I hope that many of you will consider doing so this year. All sponsorships are due by April 12 and we expect that tables and individual tickets will sell out soon!
I look forward to reconnecting with the community in this board role and collaborating on the meaningful initiatives ahead. I am honored by the opportunity to serve once again, and want to do my part to make this term on the board a remarkable one!
Yours in service,
Shawan
President and CEO
Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc.
Board Member, HandsOn NWNC
ED note: As we welcome Shawan, Daisy, and Alexa to our board, we said a sad farewell to Tamisha Keith, Dr. Torry Reynolds, and Melissa Wilson at the end of 2023. Many thanks to all three for their years of dedicated service to HandsOn! If you're interested in sharing your thoughts in this column in 2024, please let Amy know--we have just a few spots left!

Sponsor our Governor's Volunteer Service Awards Breakfast!
Each year, HandsOn NWNC, alongside our co-presenters Salem College and United Way of Forsyth County, are honored to recognize dozens of the "best of the best" volunteers from across our community for the efforts they make to improve the lives of our neighbors.
This year, on the morning of May 7th, we'll gather at Novant Health's Forsyth Medical Center's Conference Center to share the stories of these amazing volunteers and recognize winners in a wide variety of categories. The generosity of our Lead and other sponsors, including Blanco Tackabery and Novant Health, allows us to ensure that every nominee can attend the breakfast FREE OF CHARGE! Event and table sponsorships are still available, and start at just $300! Sponsoring the breakfast is great way to support the efforts of all of these volunteers, spanning across diverse mission areas, with a single gift. Table sponsorship is also the best way to ensure that you, your nominee, and their family, friends, and other teammates can all sit together. (A very limited number of individual tickets are also available.)
If you'd like to learn more about sponsoring the breakfast, or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey. We look forward to seeing you May 7th!

2023-2024 Nonprofit Essentials
Program Evaluation
| |
Thursday, April 18, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Location: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)
We know, we know...we know what people think about program evaluation! But our seventh session in the Nonprofit Essentials series delves into the nuances of how to find out what is working (or not) in your programs, and how you can leverage these insights to further strengthen your mission. It's an engaging session that will lead you through the process of designing a reasonable approach to creating meaningful measures, collecting and analyzing data, generating reports that people will read, and, ultimately, communicate results to document impact, improve services, and support your fundraising efforts.
Lori Fuller, the founder of Fuller Impact, will hold your hand on this journey! After 20 years in private philanthropy, focused on evaluation and learning, Lori launched her own consulting firm to support nonprofits and foundations. She brings her realistic optimism--her head and her heart--to helping groups make their thinking visible, deepen their strategy, and improve their implementation in order to amplify their impact. Her combination of knowledge and skills are unique, and her approach is flexible. Lori has an MSW from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from Wake Forest University.

Now Recruiting for Spring
Become a Certified Service Enterprise!
| |
Volunteers are critical to the success and sustainability of nonprofits, yet research shows formal volunteering declined from 2019 to 2021 and many volunteers haven't returned. Now, more than ever, attracting and retaining volunteers is essential for nonprofits to continue providing programs and services that meet critical community needs.
Learn how to get the most out of your volunteer engagement efforts by joining Crisis Control, Senior Services, Girl Scouts Peaks to Piedmont, and others in becoming a Certified Service Enterprise. This program combines a volunteer assessment with cohort-based training and personalized coaching to help your team "re-imagine" volunteer engagement and create opportunities that maximize their skills throughout the organization. Your organization will also create a plan that builds systems and processes to support volunteers to take you to the next level!
We are currently recruiting for our next cohort which will begin later this spring. To find out more information about Service Enterprise, please reach out to Kathy today!

Engagement Spotlight
Salemtowne Navigation At Home
| |
|
As part of our multi-year partnership with Salemtowne, we were excited to help them host a Volunteer Speed Dating event for their Navigation at Home members late last month. These small, intimate, and fun events allow interested volunteers a chance to learn more deeply about a variety of nonprofits, both large and small, with mission areas that are of interest to them, while showcasing Salemtowne's larger commitment to community engagement. These events tend to be much more meaningful and effective for both the prospective volunteers and participating nonprofits than traditional volunteer fairs. Here's just what a few people had to say:
"It’s a great opportunity to connect with people you might not otherwise meet."
"A nice mix of organizations and opportunities--I learned more about the community."
"I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the representatives of the eight different organizations represented here today."
If you are interested in bringing a Volunteer or Board Speed Dating event to your community, church, civic club, or employer, please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey to learn more!
