The Nonprofit Connection

Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact

Dear Friend,

This week, it feels like Spring is actually upon us. The rare, but oddly persistent, snow banks have finally melted; the first daffodils are starting to bloom. it's also a week where I've written four grant requests and completed our annual affiliate report, alongside many of the other, typical "signs of Spring" in the nonprofit sector! It's the time of year when it feels like someone has hit the fast-forward button, and the pause button won't get pushed again until early June. In the midst of such a busy season, during a time of great trepidation and uncertainty, I find myself trying to be more intentional about finding the beauty and reassurance that Spring also brings with it.

But that intentionality doesn't mean things slow down, and that's certainly true here at HandsOn! We hope to have a new team member on staff soon, but in the meantime, we're deep into planning our Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards dessert reception on May 6th--don't forget to reserve your table or grab your tickets! Our biggest event of the year, not only is attending the reception a wonderful way to celebrate all that volunteers do to make our community vibrant, but it's also a reminder that our mission at HandsOn remains ever "spring fresh!" Many thanks to Allegacy Federal Credit Union for being our Premier Sponsor for the awards, and we're excited to welcome Truliant Federal Credit Union as a Lead Sponsor this year.

Later this month, we're excited to host a session that focuses our wider civic engagement lens on a subject that should be important to all of us--the Census! Please join us to share your thoughts about what you know and how you feel about the 2030 Census from 5 pm to 6:30 on March 18th. Planning to attend the fantastic Collaboration class with Dr. Sharee Fowler earlier that afternoon? We'd love for you to stick around and share in some conversation and free appetizers! Can't make it? We hope you will complete this short survey about the Census. (Actually, we hope you will complete it even if you *can* join us--and please share it with others!)

Another sure sign of Spring is that Global Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Week will be upon us next month--sooner than we think! Please don't hesitate to reach out if we can help you leverage these opportunities to honor the volunteers in your world.

May the sun shine on your face this week, and I look forward to seeing you all soon on May 6th!

Amy

Support Our

Forsyth County Governor's Volunteer Awards Dessert Reception!

We're excited to once again work alongside our co-presenters, Salem College and United Way of Forsyth County, to recognize dozens of the "best of the best" volunteers from across our community for their efforts to improve the lives of our neighbors and the wider community.

On the evening of May 6th, we'll once again gather at The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness to share the stories of these amazing volunteers and recognize winners in a wide variety of categories. The generosity of our sponsors allows us to ensure that every nominee can attend the reception FREE OF CHARGE! Lead and Community Table Sponsorships are still available, and start at just $400! Sponsoring the reception is a great way to support the efforts of all of these amazing volunteers, spanning across diverse mission areas, with a single gift. It is also the best way to ensure that organizations and their nominee, family, friends, and other teammates can all sit together; tables will be reserved for all sponsors at every level, while supplies last! (A very limited number of individual tickets are also available.)

If you'd like to learn more about sponsoring the reception or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Amy. We look forward to seeing you on May 6th!

NEW SESSION!

7 Habits of High-Retention Managers

DATE: Tuesday, April 14, 9:00 am to 11:30 am

LOCATION: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)

Employee turnover doesn’t usually happen because of pay or perks; it happens because of day-to-day management experiences. This interactive, practical workshop helps managers understand why people stay, why they leave, and what leaders can do differently to retain and engage their talent (which is really what leadership is all about).

Based on her book, 7 Habits of High-Retention Managers, Leslie Speas' newest session goes beyond theory and focuses on the real behaviors that drive trust, engagement, accountability, and retention. Participants will learn how to lead people more effectively by incorporating the 7 habits into their everyday practices. Participants will leave with clear, actionable strategies they can apply with their teams right away — not a list of vague leadership concepts.

Leslie Speas is a senior-level Human Resources leader who has extensive experience in HR and organizational development over a thirty-plus-year career. She is currently President of InfluenceHR Consulting, a consulting firm that helps busy leaders and HR attract, retain, and develop talented employees.

COST: $30 for Supporting Partners, $40 for all others. Light snacks and water are provided. For questions about this class or other training, contact Kathy.

Program Evaluation

DATE: Thursday, April 16, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

LOCATION: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 213 (see map)

We know, we know--how could a class on evaluation be interactive enough to demand that we hold it in person?

Our facilitator, Lori Fuller, understands that while everyone in the sector knows the importance of evaluation, she also understands how daunting the subject can be, especially for small and emerging organizations. The 8th session in our Nonprofit Essentials series leverages Lori's deep knowledge and understanding of the capacity issues that nonprofits face when, well, faced with evaluation! Her sense of humor, willingness to answer questions, and ability to provide actionable advice make this session one not to miss--and worth making the trip in person!

COST: $50 for Supporting Partners, $60 for all others. NPE and WEL alums can attend as a refresher and pay only $25! Light snacks and water are provided. For questions about this class or other training, contact Kathy.

Engagement Spotlight:

2026 MLK Day of Service Read-In

While the first round of winter weather kept us from hosting our annual MLK Day of Service Read-In on our traditional date, it didn't deter us from hosting it during Black History Month on February 21st! The change of date allowed us to host it within the confines of the O'Kelley Library on Winston-Salem State University's campus for the first time.

For more than a decade, HandsOn, WSSU, and Wake Forest University have worked together to organize and plan the Read-In, with hosting duties rotating between the two campuses each year. This year, even with the change in day, we welcomed more than 50 children and engaged nearly 70 volunteers in a wide variety of learning stations focused on Dr. King's legacy of service, literacy, civil rights, and self-sufficiency. Each child who attended was able to take home two age-appropriate civil rights-themed books. Many thanks to our financial sponsor, Honda (which also hosted a STEM/aviation-themed station,) as well as other community partners such as BookMarks (a HandsOn Supporting Partner), UNC School of the Arts's ArtistCorps, The Links, and a wide variety of college and community volunteers that helped make the day such a success!

Volunteers had this to say about their Read-In experience:

A memorable moment was when all the kids circled up and were given a speech of encouragement to meet new people and have fun.

“It has been a pleasure the last 2 years to hear the dreams of the children as they wrote them on the aircraft we provided! Makes me want to do more to nurture their excitement, and interest in various fields!

I lOVED working with the kids--they are amazing! I was surprised and pleased at how insightful some of them were."

“I loved when the kids described their experience and it was overall very positive. To do something easy and fun that makes an impact on a child is so special.

"Thank you, this was my first time...and I am excited for next year!"

As always, we share these stories of service and engagement not only celebrate these volunteers and the impact of their experiences on themselves and others, but also to inspire you to participate in a similar project. Whether that means submitting a service project idea or mobilizing your team to partner with us on an engagement experience, your participation is crucial in ensuring that everyone in our community can serve in ways that are appropriate and impactful. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Amy to learn more!

HANDSON NWNC IN THE NEWS!

HandsOn Gets a Shout-Out for Our Helping Hands Day Partnership!

For many years now, HandsOn has been honored to partner with the City of Winston-Salem's Human Relations Commission to source and curate projects as part of their MLK Day of Service Helping Hands initiative. Each year, approximately 250 city employees spread out across the city, getting "hands on" with our organizational partners, working to build community and make life better for our neighbors--often with little fanfare.

Therefore, we were thrilled to see that Nikki Miller-Ka's profile on Denise "DD" Adams in the February 26th Winston-Salem Journal included photos of her volunteering during the 2026 Helping Hands Day at the Williams Adult Day Center at Senior Services, a HandsOn Supporting Partner. And the caption even mentioned us, noting that the initiative is a partnership between HandsOn and the city!

Many thanks to Councilwoman DD Adams for her service in January, and to the Winston-Salem Journal for the shout-out!

With more than 20 years of nonprofit executive experience, Alexandra Salas has joined the SECU Family House team, one of HandsOn’s longest Supporting Partners, as its new Executive Director. She’s an advocate for caregivers navigating medical crises, and their mission is especially meaningful to her. In 2025, Alexandra’s teenage son was diagnosed with cancer, and she truly understands the uncertainty families face during medical challenges. Her son is doing well now, and she is honored to be able to lead in this new way. As Alexandra states:

“I am profoundly grateful for the extraordinary foundation that Kathy, the board, staff, and volunteers have built over the past 15 years. Their compassion and commitment have created a true sanctuary for families in a medical crisis. It is an honor to step into this role and steward that legacy forward.”

We look forward to meeting with Alexandra in the weeks to come and continuing to work closely with her and her team at the Family House!
