Celebrate the Season of Creation: Sept 1 - Oct 4

A new season of the Ecumenical Church that's an opportunity for prayer and action for all those concerned with the well-being of Earth and its living creatures? Yes, please!

Started in 1989 by the Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I, this season is open to all people!

Pope Francis said that this time offers “individual believers and communities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which they have entrusted to our care, and to implore their help for the protection of all creation…”

Season of Creation 2023 at Benet Hill Monastery

Hildegard the hawk moves in

Sisters, employees, and retreat guests were thrilled to welcome our newest forest friend today, a female red-tailed hawk. She was rescued nearby as a nestling and raised at a raptor center. She has been showing signs of readiness so Benet Hill Monastery got the call. She joins about four rescued owls who have previously been released here.

Sister Mary Colleen promptly named the fierce young hawk after St. Hildegard, the German Benedictine Abbess from the Middle Ages who was pretty fierce herself.

After hesitating about 10 seconds, Hildegard flew straight out of the cage and ascended into the forest behind the chapel.

Watch out mice and voles, there's a new sheriff in the forest, and she's wearing some pretty fancy pantaloons!
