PFLAG In the Native American Community: Listening to Indigenous Voices

The theme for October is deep listening, and October is also LGBTQ awareness month. In celebration of these themes and National Coming Out Day (October 11), Shelia Lopez shares with the Congregation her journey to becoming a 2SLGBTQ+ ally, the Navajo cultural teachings on this subject, her work with PFLAG, and how she found her way to VUU.

Melanie Cloonan-Schulte serves as worship associate.

IN THE EDUCATION BUILDINGS

FAITH FORMATION

In this Sunday’s session, we close our exploration of "The Practice of Deep Listening" by learning ways to listen to those we disagree with. One of the hardest things about listening to people we disagree with is that instead of really listening to their side of things, we are often just talking to ourselves inside our heads as we try to figure out how we want to argue back. Being able to deeply listen and really focus on hearing what another person is saying, even if we disagree with what they are saying, is one way to express our respect and even love for that person.

Faith Formation Classes:

  • Kind/1st Grade
  • 2nd/3rd Grade

“Ritual of Remembrance”

Plan to join us October 27 for a multi-generation ritual to honor those loved ones who have died (people and pets) and to share some ideas about how we take care of each other in times of need. We’ll build an altar together with pictures and memorabilia of those we’ve lost. Bring your own decorations, too.

After service the Pastoral Care team will invite you to fill out a Life Crisis form and to consider your own Living Will or Advanced Directive. The service will include a craft for all ages. Led by Rev. Sarah and Interim Faith Formation Director Sara Sautter

Desert Notes

I enjoyed my retreat with colleagues in Rancho Palos Verdes and also camping with my family. I am catching up on emails and other administrative tasks. I enjoyed the AZCEND Gala last week, and I am looking forward to the Valley Interfaith Event next week. I am also officiating a wedding for Alison Cantley and Rick D’Andrea. This weekend I am doing some "Get Out the Vote" door knocking. If you’re like me, you may be feeling some anxiety about this election. No matter what happens, we will make space to be together and keep working for justice and compassion in our community.

In the Interim

Many of you know that I have been attending to the serious health needs of my sister over the past few weeks and that this was complicated by Hurricane Milton. I want to thank many of you who reached out to me with words of support and encouragement. Due to the need to focus on Trudee, I have had to postpone my arrival in Chandler from October 16 to the following week. I look forward to being able to be among you IN PERSON starting on Sunday, October 27.

Beginning next week, look here for a list of interim tasks, our progress and a way for you to interact and respond with these tasks. As always, contact me directly at faithform@vuu.org.

Adult Faith Formation Classes

Tending the Flame: The Art of Unitarian Universalist Parenting with Sara Sautter, CRE

This adult class for parents and guardians of children of all ages, invites parents not just to do Unitarian Universalist parenting, but to be Unitarian Universalist parents. It is an invitation to a style of parenting which is values-based and values-sharing. We will explore ways in which parents can help Unitarian Universalism guide children in their development. In so doing, we will also find ways in which Unitarian Universalism deepens for ourselves as well. The class is based upon the work of Michelle Richards and provides practical, empowering and grace-filled resources for parents who yearn to support their children in deepening and living out their Unitarian Universalist faith.

The group will meet for three evening sessions at 6:30 pm on November 6, 13 and 20 both in person and online. Enroll here.

Ethics for Unitarian Universalists with Sara Sautter, CRE

Development, clarification, refinement, and expansion of our ethical thinking often occur in the midst of crisis or in response to an event or relationship that calls our world view into question. However, this program offers an intentional process of engagement with others in examining ethical concepts, dilemmas, and questions to help participants clarify and expand their ethical understanding independent of a personal crisis. Participants examine how they have arrived at ethical positions that they hold dear. We will explore new perspectives, identify areas for further questions and exploration, and perhaps more fully embrace ethical positions they reach through careful discernment. This program will deepen and expand participants' knowledge and skills for a process of ethical reflection that is central to living our Unitarian Universalist faith.

This adult class will meet (online and/or in person) for four sessions at 6:30 pm beginning on January 8. To enroll click here.

Found Inspiration at Voting Forum

There was a Native American Voting forum held at Talking Stick a couple weeks back, and I was able to attend with my parents (Phillip and Louise). We heard from voting activist Stacey Abrams. She was inspiring and focused on how minority communities can come together and make a difference in voting.

Please let me know if you have any interest in joining this vitally important committee.

The future of I-HELP at VUU depends on YOU!
