"Making Room at the Table"
Rev. Sarah and Roz Hawkins share some perspectives on making room at the table at VUU and how to become a true JEDI. Noell Hyman leads our music.

IN THE EDUCATION BUILDINGS | |
FAITH FORMATION
The theme this month is The Practice of Inclusion, and this week, we continue our exploration of people and things that get “left out.” Last week we looked at how people get left out, today we turn to how stories get left out of our telling of history. We will dig into why this is, how it harms us all, and what we can do to tell “bigger stories” that honor us all.

Many of you have been asking about ways to respond to things happening in our state and country. If you’d like to help organize a VUU rapid response team that can assess actions and share information with the rest of the congregation, contact me at minister@vuu.org. (Use “rapid response” in the subject line, please.) This could look like organizing a group to head to a city council meeting, or a protest site, or sending responses to state legislation. Please set yourselves up through Request to Speak via this link: Civic Engagement Beyond Voting. This is a way to respond to bills (like the awful anti trans bills that keep coming up!) A rapid response team could get the word out and organize responses. They could also research events happening to share important information with everyone. I recommend setting up accounts in Signal (for now, there may be other places we use to communicate in the future). This will allow us to share sensitive information in a more secure (nothing is perfect) space. We can also invite each other to area trainings and planning sessions as they are shared with us. Here is some other information on digital security. On this note, staff could use some help from a tech savvy person in updating and assessing these needs for our computers. Especially me…let me know if you are up for helping us in this way.
On that note, I was able to join a large group of mostly Mexican immigrants (some from Central America, also) in a demonstration protest near downtown Chandler this week. A simultaneous protest was taking place in Phoenix. There were so many young people and families there. Their largest sign said “Don’t Bite the Hands That Feed You.” It was a joyful gathering–music, and cheering, flags, and many cars driving by and honking. In the face of stark political realities, our communities are responding with vigor and a deep sense of connection and power. Many “Know Your Rights” workshops are being held all over the country, discretely shared in ways that evade public scrutiny but insure the folks that need the information are getting it. I am attending a workshop developed by Corazon AZ, Valley Interfaith Project, Pima County Interfaith, Northern Arizona Interfaith, and Arizona Faith Network designed for faith leaders and congregational leaders to support our organizations in engaging in the work of advocating, organizing and supporting immigrants in our community. Some of our immigration action team will also be attending.
We are in this together. One of my favorite podcasts and places for reflection and learning is End of the World Show which features adrienne maree brown and sister Autumn Brown. I’ve also enjoyed Stories of Rebuilding which features Deepa Iyer and Adaku Utah from SolidarityIs. What are you reading, listening to, or watching that is helping you learn, grow, stay grounded and prepare to respond?
—Rev. Sarah

Correction
A few weeks ago we celebrated that our Faith Formation program was serving 100 children and youth. Today we are posting a correction: VUU certified 120 children enrolled and attending with the UUA this year. And if you are not sure, yes. That’s amazing! That’s a reason to celebrate!

Harvest the Power
Congregational Leadership
Dates: Wednesdays, starting February 12
Six 90-minutes sessions online.
Register here.
Are you interested in leadership at VUU? Are you in leadership and wanting to learn how to use your leadership as faith development?
"Harvest the Power" promotes leadership in a congregation as a deeply spiritual experience. The program strengthens the skills of those who have accepted the responsibility of leadership while providing faith development that allows leaders to model healthy personal and leadership practices.
The class guides leaders in how to cultivate a “we” culture in our congregations, with relationships and covenant at the center, rather than an “I” culture of autonomous individuals. It asks participants to examine the perspectives and gifts, strengths and challenges they each bring to the leadership team. The workshops offer frameworks and strategies to help leaders engage with congregational conflict as a way to grow in capacity to respond faithfully and live out the congregation’s mission and values in the world.
What a gift it is that members give to their faith community—a gift of their time, their love, and their talent! That gift deserves the best that the congregation can give in return—an experience of leadership that is rewarding, and an opportunity for spiritual growth as well as skill development. The Harvest the Power program is a tool to help congregations support and strengthen their leaders in a way that honors the gifts that each brings.

Read with Rev. Sarah
Wednesday, February 12, 7:00-8:15pm
Transforming Conflict
Discussion via Zoom
Join Rev. Sarah in reading Rev. Terasa Cooley’s book Transforming Conflict: The Blessings of Congregational Turmoil. Rev. Cooley believes that it is possible for “conflict experienced in the context of faith [to] transform both us and our congregation.” She says that “today’s world requires all of us to learn new ways of being in relationship to one another that is not just yelling over the fence at each other or running fast the other way.” As we work our way through change and difference, we may observe that when we are dealing with these challenges, it is easy to “conflate discomfort with threat, to mistake internal anxiety for exterior danger, and in turn to escalate rather than resolve.” If these ideas resonate with your experience of conflict, it’s time to pick up this very accessible read and join me in thinking about how we can be a community that transforms conflict into engaged relationships that work together for solutions.
Register in advance for this meeting. After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Book available from Rev. Sarah or here.

New Member Brunch
We held the brunch in rooms 1&2 and about 16 attended (including Nick not in the photo - because he was busy helping out!). Rev. Sarah started us off by going around and doing personal introductions. She then gave a brief introduction to UU, our history, etc.
We next opened up the circle to Q&A round#1 before the brunch. During the brunch, we had about 3 full tables where we got to know each other, listen to concerns about activities in our country, and discuss the importance of VUU in upholding our values.
After brunch, we went back to the circle to allow for a little more discussion about UU's history, literature, music and for more Q&A. Finally, Rev. Sarah took us on a tour of the campus including the office and the garden where we were able to enjoy a sunny day with crisp, cool temperatures.

An Update on the Music Ministry Retreat
Over 30 people brought many perspectives and a wide range of musical talents and interests to the January 25 four-hour music retreat. Newcomers and long-time members attended, and included song leaders, singers including choir members, instrumentalists, and more. The retreat was planned and presented by Rev. Sarah, Lynn DeMuth, Noell Hyman, and Teri McGovern-Nintzel. Several key topics were covered.
- An overview and definition of the interim music ministry in which VUU currently is engaged.
- A group discussion of what music does and can look like at VUU, given the array of talents and resources that exist in the congregation. Participants agreed that we are the music makers and supporters, part of our shared vision for music ministry at VUU.
- A facilitated empathy session inviting participants to reflect, share stories while listening for common values, and explore how understanding our love of music can deepen community connections.
- Identifying next steps for involving more musicians in choir, other vocal ensembles and/or solos/duets; including a band and other instrumental groups in Sunday services; and hosting musical events outside of Sunday services.
Our time together was over before we could address a couple of important agenda items, so a follow-up Zoom meeting will be scheduled. You are invited to contact member/s of the music steering committee if you are interested in supporting music ministry at VUU. Please contact Lynn DeMuth or Noell Hyman or any of the other members below.
—Members of the committee include Rev. Sarah Oglesby-Dunegan, Lisa Bonine, Nancy Egly, Mary Erickson, Laurie Fagen, Roz Hawkins, and Teri McGovern-Nintzel

An Invitation From VUU and the Valley Interfaith Project to attend the screening of FAULT LINES
VUU and VIP present a screening of this important film, followed by an open discussion—for our entire community.
FAULT LINES: Inside The Housing Crisis
When: Saturday, February 22, -- 4:00-6:00 pm
Where: VUU Congregation, 6400 W Del Rio St, Chandler AZ 85226
Donation requested: $5.00/person may be paid
paid online here (Operating Budget > VIP)
RSVP requested for planning purposes: vip@vuu.org
From directors Nate Houghteling (American Pathogen, State of Pride) and Yoav Attias (Brick City, Chicagoland) comes a new film that dives headfirst into the housing crisis to explain how we got here and predict where we might be headed. The film takes a human-centered view of the crisis to illuminate the impact of decades of policies that are now threatening to become a national emergency.
The 80-minute documentary centers on three stories of people
navigating the complexity of our housing system—a single father
seeking permanent housing for his family, a housing activist
promoting new legislation that would streamline production, and a
neighborhood group opposing a development in their neighborhood.
The film also draws on interviews with some of the leading authorities on housing policy, including Jerusalem Demsas of The Atlantic, writer Noah Smith, and California State Senator Scott Wiener.
