From Risk to Redemption

Join Rev. Sarah and Tara Sowers for a UU experience of Holy Week/Palm Sunday, where we are asked to consider when and how we will take risks to resist the cruelty of powerful leaders–how we can decide “what belongs to God (Love) and what belongs to Caesar?” In this story which we revisit every year, we are asked to consider if we have been the betrayed or the betrayer and to whom we owe forgiveness or amends; we are asked to consider whether we have been bystanders in the parade or in service to transformative powers inviting us to live and love differently? VUU Voices led by Beth Wyman perform.

FAITH FORMATION

This is our second week of exploring The Practice of Joy. Last week, we explored finding joy in foolishness, and this week, we look at how joy can be found in music. We will be taking inspiration from the well-loved and widely-used saying, “Make a joyful noise!” And we will most certainly be literally making a bunch of joyful noises ourselves!

Easter Sunday April 20, 2025

All Community Worship! “Up Rising: A Spontaneous Pageant” for All Ages. Last year, I attended the large Mormon Easter pageant held in Mesa every year with a number of UU ministers on retreat at the time. Afterwards, we discussed which stories were included about the life of Jesus or left out. We felt like, if we had a UU version of an Easter pageant, it might have some different elements. So this year we get to experience a piece of the answer to that wondering as we recreate some stories about Jesus, including those at the very end of his life. And instead of just listening as they’re told, we’re going to tell them together. Music will include VUU Voices and Ensemble and the VUU Band! After service we’ll have an egg hunt and finish with a brunch prepared by the Coming of Age youth and families. More details in the Faith Formation section!

Desert Notes

It's been a very full week. On Saturday I marched in downtown Phoenix with many UU’s and thousands of Phoenicians, and then met with a small group of leaders and Dr. Melissa James and Rev. Tania Marquez from the UUA to talk about Stewardship issues. These were both moving experiences, and one I was glad to prioritize. Sunday we enjoyed a soup lunch from the Coming of Age kids and a post service workshop on the Future of Faith Formation with Tania and Melissa. This coming weekend I will be supporting Sol’s fundraiser (see the article about it), and also in Prescott for part of the retreat this weekend. I’ll return for Sunday service.

The book I am giving to new members is one that is edited by our UUA President, Sofia Betancourt, called “Love at the Center: Unitarian Universalist Theologies.” You can order it from the UU Bookstore and I highly recommend it. (New members–it’s in! Come by my office to get your household copy!)

This month you will be invited to participate in small group conversations about our budget and our future, and I am looking forward to your creative ideas for how we can continue to grow and meet the needs of our members, friends, and new participants while also connecting with our larger community in ways that are transformative, healing, and hopeful. Look for an email soon that gives you a chance to register for a conversation.

Finally, we are beginning our search for a part time interim music coordinator. This person will be helping with some of the administrative and coordination tasks of our music program while current volunteers continue to lead the aspects of the program that bring them joy. They will also help us begin to consider our music program and its future–how we are changing, what we need to grow, and how music engagement helps us fulfill our mission and vision. A small hiring committee has been formed and is made up of music leaders and musicians. We look forward to sharing more with you when we are ready to hire someone!

New Participant Activities

Saturday, March 22, VUU held our quarterly new members class. As an ice-breaker, Rev. Sarah led us through the "spectrums" activity we recently exercised during a VUU service. During this outdoor activity, Rev. Sarah names two ends of an extreme of various beliefs and values with space (about 20 feet) between those points. Then everyone in the group pics a spot between those points where they land in their belief or value, between the two extremes. This activity is not only a great way to contemplate our own values, but such a great way to get to know each other while having fun! Rev. Sarah also gave a brief history of the origins of Unitarian Universalism and answered questions, all while eating delicious treats and having wonderful discussions.

Attending members: Janee, Jack, Emma, Bee, Rowan, Heather, Maia, Kim, Christine, Katie, Joyce, Doug and Rev. Sarah

The next new members class is Saturday, June 7 (RSVP Here).

Youth Class Time Change Starts This Week

We have worked this year to help children feel included. Now we will bring the youth into our worship every week.

Starting on Sunday, April 13 and continuing through the end of the church year, youth in both high school and middle school will begin in the worship service and walk to their classes after the time for all ages.

Get Ready for Easter FUN!

April 20 is Easter Sunday. We are making changes to our traditional Easter fun at VUU (because of course we are…)

Instead of an Easter breakfast before worship, an Easter Brunch hosted by the Coming of Age youth will take place after the worship service at 11:45am. COA youth and their families will be loading the buffet with egg dishes, quiches, pastries, fruit, yogurt and much more deliciousness.

Easter Sunday will be an All-Community worship day with children taking part in our Spontaneous Easter Pageant. Directly after the pageant, children from toddlers through elementary school may participate in the egg hunt with our whole community cheering them on! Tweens may partner with a younger child in informal parent supervised dyads.

10:30 Easter Service featuring Spontaneous Easter pageant.

11:40 Easter Egg Hunt on the North side of the sanctuary

Let’s enjoy food, fun and each other’s company!

Joys and Concerns

A Message from tia

Hello, my name is "tia" (nickname for Therese M. Atallah) and I am a person who is disabled using a service dog in public. Just to let you know, when you see me at VUU with my service dog that is a large standard poodle, please do not try to communicate with him or try to get his attention without asking me first.

When he is distracted from doing his job, it can be dangerous for me since he is taking his attention off of me and focusing on you instead.

Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes,

tia  (I was also trained to not share the name of my service dog with others since it then gives the other person the ability to call my service dog and thus, again, taking attention away from me)

Page Turners Book Club

The Page Turners Book Club is open to all members, visitors, and friends of VUU who enjoy reading and discussing a variety of books. The next meeting is Thursday, April 17 at 7:00 pm. We will meet at the home of Johnnie Godfrey in Tempe (near Baseline Rd. and the 101).  The book is One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus.

The novel is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world.

For the meeting address or questions, please contact Johnnie at 480-231-8381 or email: membership@vuu.org.

VUU Green Sanctuary Garden

Four years ago, the Food for Life and the Planet (FLP) Committee assumed responsibility for VUU’s Green Sanctuary Garden. Kat Karpinen and I became co-chairs, and along with Ken St. John, numerous gardeners and volunteers, and grants from Special Funds, we made many significant improvements and successfully provided vegetables to the community and to our members.

Although we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the garden, Kat and I feel that it is time to hand the responsibility over to the next garden leaders. Krista Zabor has graciously stepped up to be a chair. We would like to have a co-chair to assist.

If you love gardening, won’t you please consider joining us to bring the garden to its next phase? Kat and I will be available to provide direction and Ken is remaining actively involved.

Please contact Kat Karpinen and/or Denise McLeod if you have an interest and would like to learn more. Thank you!

Warmly,

Denise

Event to Support Invisible Disabilities

Sol Oglesby-Dunegan is planning an event for Saturday, April 12 to deepen awareness and support for invisible disabilities. "Poems I Wrote From My Bathroom Floor" is a poetry and spoken word event for those with POTS, EDS, and Epilepsy to share their experiences as disabled people in our society. There is a $5 entrance fee, and it is a fundraising event. All money earned will be split three ways and donated to three organizations that work closely to help those with these disabilities. The program itself runs from 11:30 am-2:00 pm, and doors open at 11:00 am. There will be resources available for those interested and a Q&A circle will run after the program ends. Volunteers to help with set up, take down, and donation collection are needed. Come and bring some friends! Contact Sol for more information or to volunteer.

The future of healthcare in Arizona is in jeopardy

Federal spending cuts are being considered that could reduce access to and eligibility for Medicaid (provided through AHCCCS in Arizona). Medicaid is the foundation of health care in Arizona and any cuts will impact everyone, not just Medicaid patients. Cuts will also dramatically impact our state economy.

The VUU VIP core team is organizing with our VIP partners and others, building coalitions to educate elected officials and our community about this important issue.

Join us on the patio outside the sanctuary after the service on Sunday, April 13 and April 20. We want to share information and collect stories of how potential spending cuts will impact you and your family. Be a part of the conversation—we need to hear from you!

We also invite you to attend a VIP Delegates Assembly and Action to Protect Medicaid being held at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church (PVUMC) on Wednesday, April 23, 6:30-8:00pm. Please join us in protecting the future of healthcare services in our state and communities!
