"Stories We Can Live By"
Join us for a multi-generation service with voices from different generations sharing what it looks like when we live our UU values and what makes a place or a community feel like home. If you or someone in your family has a story (all ages welcome!) contact Rev. Sarah at minister@vuu.org.
As always we’ll have Soul Work tables for hands that like to be busy and lots of chances to sing and engage with each other. Multi generation services are designed to help us connect across generations and bridge the “gulf” between the youth faith formation classes across the parking lot and the adults and activities in our sanctuary.
Rev. Sarah, Sara Sautter, and Joel Sannes lead with music leadership from Lynn DeMuth and a crew of VUU singers and musicians.

This short video addresses a potent idea for us as we move forward together to build resilient communities that grow and thrive and support all of us–soil versus seeds?
How are we creating a rich soil in which our seeds can grow? What beliefs, ideas, and stories can we tell that will create a context that supports us–all of us–as we find ways to act and learn together in support of these?
This weekend I spent all of Saturday at the Chandler multicultural festival with other VUUers at a table where we interacted with many parents, grandparents, kids and leaders of other organizations in a vibrant festival honoring new citizens, many different cultures and their artistic expressions as well as religious beliefs. There were a wide range of foods, music, dance, art, crafts, and organizations supporting our community.
On Monday I spent half the day with VUUers in the Phoenix MLK March and festival as well. We talked to many different people about who we are as a congregation and learned about other organizations and people who share some of our core values and commitments–especially anti-racism and anti-oppression. Both days were energizing for me in the face of the inauguration of our 47th President and his largely antithetical view of our communities, diversity, and democracy.
Friends, we will need to be ready to show up for those being attacked in our communities. It's important that we keep developing relationships with other faith communities and organizations because we cannot do this work alone–will need “many Martins” as the Poor People’s Campaign says.
One way to engage this work is to follow 30 Days of Love, a program of the UUA Social Justice arm, Side With Love, beginning January 20 through February 14. Visit this website for more information on how we can support our beloveds–immigrants, trans "folx," indigenous peoples and our environment, and Black folks. Each week has a theme and resources for us to engage.
-Rev. Sarah

In the Interim
The Twin Statements of Stagnation:
“But we’ve never done it THAT way!”
“But we’ve always done it THIS way!”
Transformation is one of UU values. Our statement on this value says:
Transformation: We adapt to the changing world.
We covenant to collectively transform and grow spiritually and ethically. Openness to change is fundamental to our Unitarian and Universalist heritages, never complete and never perfect.
This is particularly important during an interim time. Our faith has grown exponentially over the past 63 years since the Unitarians and the Universalists joined to create the faith that is impossible for our youngest members to learn to say. We evolved from a faith that was firmly rooted in Christianity, later evolved to include Judaism and then the world's great religions. A faith whose principles spoke only of men, to one that includes “them.”
And from this 63 years of growth and evolution, our theological leaders found this to be an asset. We have learned that continuing to learn is important. As a faith, we worked hard to address sexism and homophobic behaviors in our congregations. This next decade we will continue to work on learning how to address racism in our ranks and to transform.
This is an endless practice, never complete and never perfect. Thank you for your patience during this interim time.
-Sara Sautter, Interim Director of Faith Formation

Call for VUU GA Delegate Candidates
The VUU Denominational Affairs Committee (DAC) is looking for candidates to become VUU delegates to the UUA General Assembly (GA), which will be held June 18 - June 22 in Baltimore, MD. We are looking for interested members who are willing to represent VUU, make connections among GA attendees, and to learn and bring ideas back to our Committees and the Congregation. They will need to represent the diverse perspectives of VUU members and congregational opinions in discussions and voting matters.
This year, GA will be held in person and virtually. Delegates must attend the Business Sessions at a minimum, but ideally they would also attend the workshops and lectures, where many of the ideas to be brought back to VUU will be found.
More information on the DAC's selection criteria can be found here. Details about GA can be found at uua.org/ga. Please reach out to us at dac@vuu.org with any questions, or to let us know you are interested in becoming a delegate.

Read with Rev. Sarah: Transforming Conflict & Authentic Selves
Join Rev. Sarah in reading Rev. Terasa Cooley’s book, Transforming Conflict: The Blessings of Congregational Turmoil. Rev. Cooley believes that it is possible for “conflict experienced in the context of faith [to] transform both us and our congregation.” She says that “today’s world requires all of us to learn new ways of being in relationship to one another that is not just yelling over the fence at each other or running fast the other way.” As we work our way through change and difference, we may observe that when we are dealing with these challenges, it is easy to “conflate discomfort with threat, to mistake internal anxiety for exterior danger, and in turn to escalate rather than resolve.” If these ideas resonate with your experience of conflict, it’s time to pick up this very accessible read and join me in thinking about how we can be a community that transforms conflict into engaged relationships that work together for solutions.

Currently a resident of the Phoenix metro, he is working with Rev. Sarah on programs related to this read. Stay tuned for more information. If you’d like to help with this project, please contact Rev. Sarah.
Discussion about these books will be announced soon.

Happy New Year from VUU’s VIP Core Team!
We are a group of VUU members who work with teams from other VIP-member institutions to address problems affecting our members and their loved ones and neighbors across Maricopa County.
House Meetings. With VUU’s Caring Neighbors committee, we co-host monthly “house meetings,” small group conversations to help members of the VUU congregation connect with each other. All are welcome to meet your neighbors and join the conversation after the service on the 4th Sunday of each month. Next one is Sunday, January 26.
Retreat. Building leadership skills is a key component of VIP’s mission. The next Leadership Skills Retreat is Saturday, February 1 at Dayspring Arcadia UMC. If you are interested in learning more about VIP’s organizing and/or ramping up your leadership skills, RSVP for details about this opportunity.
Film Screening. We’re excited to continue organizing for affordable housing, mental health access, and immigrant rights in 2025. Please plan to attend the screening of the documentary film “Fault Lines—Inside the Housing Crisis” on Saturday, February 22 at VUU. The film is a great look at all sides of a Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) fight that mimics our recent work in Chandler.
Meeting. The VIP Core Team meets next on Monday, January 27 at 9:00 am in the VUU Board Room. You are welcome to join us!

Donation Coordinator Needed to Help Paz de Cristo
VUU collects donations for Paz de Cristo's emergency food box program, and I am looking for one or two people to take over the duties right away.
This is a wonderful way to volunteer if you're busy and don't have much time. The responsibilities are simple:

-
Collect donated items whenever you can and deliver them to Paz de Cristo
This is a great opportunity for new families looking to get involved, for those who prefer to work alone, or for someone with a busy schedule! If you’re interested, please reach out. I’ll train you and ensure a smooth transition. Thanks!
Please note that this role is different from the monthly meal preparation that we do on the second Friday of every month at Paz, and which you can sign up for here.
