FAITH FORMATION

This week we lift up our theme of The Practice of Story as we honor Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. His story of wanting a brighter future for his children and the world’s children helps us understand that stories can be a driving and inspirational force for social change.

Desert Notes

This weekend we will celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a myriad of ways, including our Sunday service. This is the first January since I’ve been here that our Sanctuary hasn’t been under construction, and I am excited to experience a full service together in honor of him. I think sometimes we don’t take the time to really orient the way this commemoration impacts us differently based on our identity–our racial identity, in particular. There’s a tension around wanting to honor him using cultural expressions that come from the Black/African American community (I know folks feel different ways even about naming identity!) because in a congregation where the minister and musicians may be white or mostly not Black/African American, the context, meaning and importance of these cultural expressions may not be as clear or as nuanced as they really deserve to be.

If you’ve never been in a predominantly Black church and sung the Black national anthem (Lift Every Voice) you might not have experienced the true power of this song and the depth with which it can be sung. I have vivid memories of this powerful song and the voices singing it with devotion, determination and depth.  In my experience, many white folks barely know this song. It references the history of slavery and its violence, as well as the incredible strength it took and still takes to survive, heal and thrive the generational trauma and institutional impacts in our country from this experience and history. I know I don’t know the depths of this experience. So when I sing it or hear it sung, it is with a sense of humility and honor and commitment–an understanding that I must listen and learn and then show up to the work that needs doing to continue to dismantle institutionalized racism and forms of white supremacy that benefit me even as I am trying to dismantle them.

This Sunday we humbly offer a service in which we will sing this and other songs, and in which we will honor and remember a legacy that continues to beckon us into deeper work and commitments. It is my prayer that all of us will hear a call to service and action. For those of us who are not Black/African American, I hope you will also hear an invitation to lean in and listen for a call to learn and to grow in awareness of how systemic racism continues to impact our community and our country, especially anti-black racism.

With love and commitment,

Rev. Sarah

In the Interim

The Twin Statements of Stagnation:

“But we’ve never done it THAT way!”

“But we’ve always done it THIS way!”

Transformation is one of UU values. Our statement on this value says:

Transformation: We adapt to the changing world.

We covenant to collectively transform and grow spiritually and ethically. Openness to change is fundamental to our Unitarian and Universalist heritages, never complete and never perfect.

This is particularly important during an interim time. Our faith has grown exponentially over the past 63 years since the Unitarians and the Universalists joined to create the faith that is impossible for our youngest members to learn to say. We evolved from a faith that was firmly rooted in Christianity, later evolved to include Judaism and then the world's great religions. A faith whose principles spoke only of men, to one that includes “them.”

And from this 63 years of growth and evolution, our theological leaders found this to be an asset. We have learned that continuing to learn is important. As a faith, we worked hard to address sexism and homophobic behaviors in our congregations. This next decade we will continue to work on learning how to address racism in our ranks and to transform.

This is an endless practice, never complete and never perfect. Thank you for your patience during this interim time.

Call for VUU GA Delegate Candidates

The VUU Denominational Affairs Committee (DAC) is looking for candidates to become VUU delegates to the UUA General Assembly (GA), which will be held June 18 - June 22 in Baltimore, MD. We are looking for interested members who are willing to represent VUU, make connections among GA attendees, and to learn and bring ideas back to our Committees and the Congregation. They will need to represent the diverse perspectives of VUU members and congregational opinions in discussions and voting matters.

This year, GA will be held in person and virtually. Delegates must attend the Business Sessions at a minimum, but ideally they would also attend the workshops and lectures, where many of the ideas to be brought back to VUU will be found.

More information on the DAC's selection criteria can be found here. Details about GA can be found at uua.org/ga. Please reach out to us at dac@vuu.org with any questions, or to let us know you are interested in becoming a delegate.

Read with Rev. Sarah: Transforming Conflict & Authentic Selves

Join Rev. Sarah in reading Rev. Terasa Cooley’s book, Transforming Conflict: The Blessings of Congregational Turmoil. Rev. Cooley believes that it is possible for “conflict experienced in the context of faith [to] transform both us and our congregation.” She says that “today’s world requires all of us to learn new ways of being in relationship to one another that is not just yelling over the fence at each other or running fast the other way.” As we work our way through change and difference, we may observe that when we are dealing with these challenges, it is easy to “conflate discomfort with threat, to mistake internal anxiety for exterior danger, and in turn to escalate rather than resolve.” If these ideas resonate with your experience of conflict, it’s time to pick up this very accessible read and join me in thinking about how we can be a community that transforms conflict into engaged relationships that work together for solutions.

Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families is the UUA Common Read this year. This volume includes photos which are also part of a a traveling exhibit. Jozeppi Morelli, one of the people featured in the book, frequently accompanies the exhibit at public events led by congregations and other organizations interested in learning about and growing support for trans and nonbinary people. Currently a resident of the Phoenix metro, he is working with Rev. Sarah on programs related to this read. Stay tuned for more information. If you’d like to help with this project, please contact Rev. Sarah.

Discussion about these books will be announced soon.

Retreat, Relax, Repeat: Prescott Awaits!

We’re hosting a planning meeting on Sunday, January 26 after the service in the board room, and we’d love for you to join us if you’re interested in helping shape this year’s retreat. It will be very casual so feel free to bring kids, food, whatever. Reach out if you can't make it but have input.

Stay tuned for details on how to register. Let’s make the 2025 retreat unforgettable!

Joys and Concerns

Photos from Katie's Farewell Party

Last Sunday, January 12, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our Director of Music Ministry, Katie Seiferth. The service was a beautiful celebration filled with music, song, and deep gratitude for the time and gifts she shared with us. Katie's dedication and passion have blessed our community in countless ways, and while we will miss her dearly, we send her off with love and best wishes for her next chapter.

Caring Ministries and Aging: Please fill out a Life Crisis Form

Last Sunday, Melissa Bush addressed the congregation about the work that the Lay Pastoral Care Associates are planning to do regarding the challenges of aging and its impact on the individual, their family, friends, and the wider community. Caring Neighbors is partnering with LPCA in this endeavor.

We are planning to have periodic discussions about aging and provide resources on this topic. For example, we will be sending out a short survey about caregiving, to identify those in the congregation who are caregivers and who may need support. We plan to have offerings over the coming year and beyond to explore these issues. We want to normalize the experience of aging and the need for more assistance. We hope to provide education to congregants to prepare for difficult conversations and provide support for adult children facing the aging of their parents.

Some of you may know, our congregation experienced the sudden deaths of two members recently, Liz Chain and Jodi Cicerello. The shock of these untimely deaths left us scrambling to find contact information to be able to notify family and friends. So, in order to improve our ability to contact loved ones, we are asking each of you to fill out an emergency contact form, titled "Life Crisis Form," to be kept in the office by Reverend Sarah. Our first project is spreading awareness about these forms and encouraging congregants to fill them out.

You can find the forms on the VUU website.

We are eager to hear your ideas and concerns. Melissa and I are looking forward to working with all of you to normalize these challenging and often uncomfortable topics.

Donation Coordinator Needed to Help Paz de Cristo

VUU collects donations for Paz de Cristo's emergency food box program, and I am looking for one or two people to take over the duties right away.

This is a wonderful way to volunteer if you're busy and don't have much time. The responsibilities are simple:

  • Post a suggested donation in the newsletter each month
  • Collect donated items whenever you can and deliver them to Paz de Cristo

This is a great opportunity for new families looking to get involved, for those who prefer to work alone, or for someone with a busy schedule! If you’re interested, please reach out. I’ll train you and ensure a smooth transition. Thanks!

Please note that this role is different from the monthly meal preparation that we do on the second Friday of every month at Paz, and which you can sign up for here.
