She has more than 25 years of experience working in collaborations with local nonprofits, including through previous staff roles with Forsyth Promise, United Way of Forsyth County, and Family Services, Inc., before entering academia.

Nonprofit Essentials is a series of ten courses designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, volunteers, or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector. Offered in partnership with Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement, Nonprofit Essentials classes cover a range of topics essential to the governance, management, and operation of nonprofits and are taught primarily by WFU faculty, staff, or alums. Classes are held for a half-day once a month from September to June of the following year. You can sign up for the entire series or register for just individual classes.

LOCATION: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)

We know we know...we know what people think about program evaluation! But our seventh session in the Nonprofit Essentials series delves into the nuances of finding out what is working (or not) in your programs, and how you can leverage these insights to further strengthen your mission. It's an engaging session that will lead you through the process of designing a reasonable approach to creating meaningful measures, collecting and analyzing data, generating reports that people will read, and, ultimately, communicating results to document impact, improve services, and support your fundraising efforts.

Lori Fuller, the founder of Fuller Impact, will hold your hand on this journey! After 20 years in private philanthropy, focused on evaluation and learning, Lori launched her consulting firm to support nonprofits and foundations. She brings her realistic optimism--her head and her heart--to helping groups make their thinking visible, deepen their strategy, and improve their implementation to amplify their impact. Engagement Spotlight:

Reynolds American Foundation

Reynolds-Anniversary-alternate-logo_metallic-with-bevel image

Last month, we were honored to work with our current board member, Walter Farabee, and his team at Reynolds American to host a retreat for the board members of all three of their foundations: Reynolds American Foundation, SFNTC Foundation, and ASC Charitable Trust. We quickly identified that Ruth Peebles, from The INS Group, a long-time HandsOn Consulting Partner, would be a great match to provide some basic board training and help them facilitate discussions around their missions, focus areas, grant processes, and other strategic planning items. We also were able to happy to have the ability to host them at The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. As Walter stated in his LinkedIn post, "The energy in that place is infectious!" A big shout-out to Kathy Davis on our team for facilitating this on our end.

Fostering experiences like this one for the American Reynolds Foundation is just one way that we increase engagement across our community and strengthen our civic fiber. Whether it's by creating a customized service project, putting together a specifically curated training event, or hosting an intimate Board Speed Dating evening, partnering with us can make your engagement goals easier to achieve. We hope these stories inspire you to engage with us in similar ways--submit a service project idea, think of us for your next staff/board training or retreat, or consider gathering together in service. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Casey to learn more.

Vendor Partner Spotlight:

Allyson H. Sawtell, CPA, P.A.

Unlock Your Nonprofit's Potential: Expert Business Advice for

Growth and Impact!

For almost 30 years, Davie County native Allyson H. Sawtelle has been empowering nonprofit organizations to maximize their impact. As an NC CPA since 1994, Allyson brings for-profit business strategies to the nonprofit world, driving funding and mission success.

Allyson's leadership as Treasurer and then President of Farmington Community Association, a HandsOn Supporting Partner, demonstrates this firsthand. During her tenure, she spearheaded a remarkable transformation, increasing rental income by over 1000% and securing nearly $350,000 in capital improvement grants. This success stemmed from implementing sound financial practices and establishing the FCA as a vital community asset. During her tenure, fundraisers such as the annual Tour of Farmington road cycling event grew by 335%. These shifts and growth were necessary as previous funding for operations became unavailable in 2016 and the organization had to pivot to increase its primary income (rentals) and event income to sustain operations.

Allyson sees the current environment for nonprofits as a time of refocusing to ensure sustainability in light of potential funding cuts at the federal level. Since she has led an organization to that point and has also helped many nonprofit clients to become more attractive to potential private donors such as local foundations and corporate sponsors, she is uniquely qualified to provide leadership to local nonprofits. Her approach is accomplished through the following READY strategy:

  • Review: Assess your current financial standing, business practices, and staffing structure.
  • Establish: Implement robust financial controls to protect assets, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote best practices in financial reporting.
  • Audit-Ready: Document controls and processes for seamless transitions and prepare for potential audits.
  • Develop: Craft customized solutions to address your nonprofit's unique challenges and optimize resource allocation.
  • Yield: Continuously monitor financial performance and resource allocation for maximum impact.

NC Sales Tax Refund Urgency:

A current focus of Allyson’s practice is to help 501(c)(3) organizations claim refunds on sales taxes paid through the NC Department of Revenue's reimbursement program. With potential legislative changes on the horizon (S.B. 62), it's crucial to act now! Allyson's streamlined process ensures you recoup eligible funds quickly. An unknown with this potential new legislation is how long the existing reimbursement process will be in place. Currently, organizations have a 3-year window to file for these refunds. Allyson has developed a framework to get the refund forms completed quickly based on receipts provided by the organization and get them filed with the state to ensure the organization recoups any money due to them.

Why Choose Allyson H. Sawtelle, CPA, P.A.?

• Expertise: Over 30 years of experience serving the nonprofit sector

• Personalized Approach: Customized strategies to fit your organization's specific needs

• Results-Driven: Proven track record of helping nonprofits improve efficiency and impact

• Ongoing Support: Committed to your long-term success, not just one-time projects

But don't wait--the survey closes on March 7th!! Note: NFF requests that only one person from your nonprofit complete the survey.

Become a Champion for Volunteer Month in April!

Global Volunteer Month celebrates volunteers worldwide while also increasing and encouraging more individuals to volunteer. Throughout the month of April, including during National Volunteer Week from April 20-26, HandsOn NWNC in partnership with other Points of Light Global Affiliates and hundreds of other nonprofits globally, is urging every person to take action, as every act of service contributes to a more connected world.

We all know that nonprofits rely on volunteers to deliver urgent community needs. Yet based on recent research by Points of Light, nearly 50 percent of volunteer opportunities go unfilled. Even as the rate of volunteering increases, it is not back to pre-pandemic levels. There has never been a more important time to recognize the impact that volunteers have on individuals, communities, and society, and increase the rate of people volunteering.

We encourage all of our partners to join us in becoming a Global Volunteer Month Champion--and it's easy to do! You can be part of the Social Surge on April 1st, order a Global Volunteer Month t-shirt, share a message in your newsletter, and more. A full toolkit is available for both GVM and NVW on the Points of Light website. Together, we can mobilize more people to engage in their communities this year!

“This groundbreaking partnership addresses a critical need in healthcare workforce retention and recruitment by offering preferred enrollment at the new center for children of our staff,” Brookridge CEO Reed VanderSlik said. “By providing flexible, high-quality childcare that accommodates the demands of healthcare work, we're supporting our staff through challenging schedules, weather-related school closures, flexible rates for employees of Brookridge based on income, and non-traditional hours.”

VanderSlik said enrollment at the Center for Thriving Children will be open to the public, subject to filling the childcare needs of Brookridge staff.

With the many challenges facing child care centers in recent months, HandsOn is excited to see this innovative model that will benefit both nonprofit workers and the wider community alike come to life!

Current NCAVA Members to Receive Discount on CVA Certification!

Last month, we were saddened to learn the news that after more than 50 years, the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration has decided to dissolve by the end of this month. As a past president and long-time fan, this was especially tough news for Amy. NCAVA was a pioneer as one of the first professional associations for volunteer managers in the country and the first to offer a professional credential in volunteer management. However, due to difficulties in recruiting new board members, fewer local affiliates organized across the state, and fewer members seeking certification, the board determined that continuing operations was no longer feasible.

However, as they wind down operations, NCAVA has arranged with the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA) to offer the opportunity for any current NCAVA members to achieve the CVA professional credential at a reduced cost.  CCVA is home to the CVA (Certified in Volunteer Administration) credential as well as the professional ethics in volunteer administration. Globally, you will find 1100 CVAs, all leaders of volunteers in diverse settings. You can find out more about the CVA credential by attending one of their free information sessions. CCVA is offering all NCAVA members a discount of $50 on the exam fee for the April 2025 and October 2025 CVA exams only. The current exam fee is $400. NCAVA members would receive an exam fee of $350 for this year only.  For more details, and to take advantage of this offer, please email Faiza Venzant, CCVA's Executive Director.
