The Catholic who became The Baptist
who became The Historian.
James Beller is the author of the book, America in Crimson Red, which takes a look at some of the lesser-known figures in American history and the Christians who, many of them, sacrificed their lives to ensure that we would have the religious freedom that we take for granted today.
Beller was born into a Catholic family and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri.
One day, when he was seventeen and living with his family in Arnold, Missouri, he went out to the car to help his mom carry in their weekly groceries.
He opened the door and saw a little pamphlet laying on the seat. It was called This Was Your Life.
After he brought in the groceries, he went up to his room and intently read through it.
He really took it all in until he got to the end and it showed an angel throwing the man into hell because he hadn’t trusted Christ. He didn’t think God would do that and thought the tract must not be true so he ripped it up and threw it in the trash.
The following week, when he went out to help carry in the groceries again, he opened the door and there was another This Was Your Life track.
Again, he went up to his room and read it. He kept rereading it and rereading it for days until he finally decided to trust Christ as his Savior.
Right away, he realized that the Catholic church hadn’t taught him this and that he needed to find a different church.
He was on a quest and tried many, many different places, but it wasn’t until his friend invited him to a tent revival that he was able to find a place that taught the truth.
He went on to attend a Baptist college, which is where he met his wife, Vickie, and started pastoring in Arnold, Missouri.
After going on a Baptist history tour and learning about some of the Baptist forefathers, it touched his heart and, even though he never started out to be an author, the Lord really put it on his heart to write a book on the subject.
He began to do a lot of in-depth research and even traveled to Europe a couple of times in order to understand it better.
He wanted to make sure he got original sources and that everything was documented extremely well.
On July 31, 2004, all 607 pages of the book, America in Crimson Red: The Baptist History of America, were published.
8 years ago today, Beller went home to Heaven, but his book continues to be an incredible resource and continues to have an impact on those who read it. VCYAmerica

Reason 1: The Bible Must Be The Only Rule of Faith and Practice
If your “church” accepts anything, and I do mean anything, other than the Bible as the Word of God and rule for the Christian life, you are not in a Biblical Church.
Here are some examples, If the pastor, founder or leader is called a prophet, or an apostle and claims to receive direct revelation from God outside of or in contradiction to the Bible, then that is not Biblical.
People like, Ellen G. White who founded the 7th Day Adventists, claimed to have received over 2,000 visions and dreams from God.
The founder of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Joseph Smith said he saw Jesus, or an angel, or Jesu and God, in a vision and was given a Golden Book, containing the Book of Mormon.
Mary Baker Eddy the founder of Christian Science published "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" She claimed it was the final revelation of God to mankind and asserted that her work was inspired of God.
You must also understand that the tongues, Pentecostal, and Charismatic movements all fall into this category and in fact are the most successful and flagrant disregarders of God’s word.
When, the church practices tongues, signs, prophetic utterances, etc. that are all extra-Biblical. This “personal revelation” from God can and often does supersede and ignore the teaching of the Word.
Instead of one founder or leader thinking they are hearing directly from God now an entire “church” believes they have a direct pipeline of pure revelation. Accordingly there is no longer a need to study the Bible according to the principles of hermeneutics or even read the Bible since tongues, visions, feelings and prophecies are a much faster, fresher and direct channel to God.
Rule: The Bible Must Be The Only Authority For A Believer
The Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and practice because the Bible is God's very word and carries the absolute authority of God Himself. Where the Bible speaks we must speak and where it is silent we should be silent. What it commands we must do. What it prohibits we must avoid. There is no authority equal to the Bible and no person or group may change, add to, override or contradict that authority. It was completed with the book of Revelation and is true in every word and thought.
2 Timothy 3:15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
2 Peter 1:20, 21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Jude 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Matthew 5:17-19 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Proverbs 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Reason 2: Only Local Church Authority
If your “church” is not a Holy Spirit led democracy but instead the pastor, elders or a board govern the church, over and above the members of the church, you aren’t in a Biblical church.
Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Catholics all believe that the local church has no authority and that all local churches are under the power of the “Church Hierarchy.” A Pope, or Bishops, or Elders or Presbytery control and dictate to the local churches. In addition any pastor within a local church who usurps the authority of that body is no longer leading a Biblical church.
Rule: The Local Church Is Independent and Autonomous
A true, Biblical church is an independent body accountable only to the Lord Jesus Christ, who founded it and is its head. All authority for governing the local church resides within the local church itself. The church is autonomous, or self-governing. No religious power or hierarchy outside the local church may dictate a church's beliefs or practices. A true church may and should fellowship with other churches around mutual interests, but that church cannot be a "member" of any other body nor under the authority of any organization outside the church in matters of the Gospel and Great Commission.
Acts 5:29 - Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
Colossians 1:18 - And he (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
2 Corinthians 8:1-5, 19, 23 - Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.
Reason 3: A Direct Personal Relationship With God
If a “church” uses an intermediary between the believer and God, either in prayers or instruction then that is not a Biblical church.
In the Catholic church, priests take confession from members of the church and absolve them of their sin, rather than the individual going directly to God for forgiveness. It does not have to be as formal as a confessional booth however, In some “churches” a prophet, or pastor acts as God’s intermediary without ever donning a robe or lighting a candle. When any person stand between you and your direct relationship and prayers to God, you are not in a Biblical church.
Rule: Every Believer Is His Own Priest
Every true believer is a priest of God and may enter into His presence directly through our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ. No other mediator is needed between God and His people. As priests, we can study God's Word, pray for others, and offer spiritual worship to God. We all have equal access to God because each of us is indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God.
1 Peter 2:5, 9 - Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Revelation 5:9-10 - And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Rom 8:26-27 - Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Reason 4: Church Ordinances and Offices Not In The Bible
If you are a member of a group of people who call themselves a church but who have rituals, practices, offices or ordinances that were not in the first church founded by Jesus Christ, then you are probably not a member of a Biblical Church.
The examples of these extra-biblical false practices are everywhere among religious people. Practices such as the Catholic Mass and their Seven Sacraments, the Mormon church’s Baptism for the dead, even the infant baptism of the Methodists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians is not found in scripture and has been added by the wisdom of men rather than the revelation of God in His word.
Rule: There Are Only Two Ordinances
The local church should practice two and only two ordinances, the baptism of believers by immersion in water, identifying the individual with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection, and The Lord’s Supper, a memorial of His death upon the cross for us. These ordinances are purely symbolic and have no saving or sustaining merit in themselves.
Matthew 28:19 – 20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you I, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 - For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Rule: There Are Only Two Offices In The Church
The Bible mandates only two offices in the church--pastor and deacon. The terms pastor, elder, bishop, or overseer all refer to the same office. The two offices of pastor and deacon exist within the local church, and are elected or removed by the authority of the local church and only the local church.
1 Timothy 3:1,8 - This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work..
Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
Acts 20:17, 28 - And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood
Philippians 1:1-2 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Reason 5 Freedom of Conscience aka Liberty of the Soul
If the organization you belong to has ever held the same power as the civil government or state and if that power was used to dictate what anyone should or must believe, then you are not in a Biblical church. If your “church” is or ever was a “state” church, it is not a Bible based church.
The historic examples like the Holy Roman Empire, the Lutheran Church of German, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, the Anglican Church of England all show us historically the danger of such organizations and the Bible shows us the doctrinal error.
Rule: Individual Soul Liberty
Every individual, whether a believer or an unbeliever, has the liberty to choose what he believes is right in the his own heart as regards spiritual truth. No one should be forced to profess a belief against his own convictions or will.
Romans 14:5, 12-13 - One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.
2 Corinthians 4:2 - But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
Titus 1:9 - Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
Rule: Separation of Church and State
God established both the church and the civil government, and He gave each its own distinct sphere of operation. The government's purposes are outlined in Romans 13:1-7 and the church's purposes in Matthew 28:19 and 20. Neither should control the other, nor should there be an alliance between the two. Christian influence should be exerted through opinion and the election of moral leaders by involved Christians as well as praying for our leaders but the line between influence and control must be clearly understood.
Romans 13:1-7 - Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Matthew 22:15-22 - Then went the Pharisees and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
Matthew 28:19-20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Reason 6 Salvation and Church membership
If a “church” makes a person a member by any other means than by a profession of faith and voluntary submission to baptism and the church, then that church is not a Biblical church.
Example: Infant baptism makes a baby a member of the church even before it can talk. A person is considered a member of a church because of their parents, nationality or background.
Rule: Only The Saved and Scripturally Baptized Can Be Church Members
Local church membership is restricted to individuals who give a believable testimony of personal faith in Christ and have publicly identified themselves with Him in believer's baptism. Salvation is by grace through faith and is once for all. Salvation cannot be earned but only received as a gift of God through faith. Once a person truly believes, they can never be lost again, they are eternally secure by the power of God. Membership in the church is based upon baptism by immersion of an individual old enough to understand the consequences of sin and the choice they must make in Christ.
Acts 2:41-47 - Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
2 Corinthians 6:14 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Ephesians 4:3-4 - Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
Matthew 3:13-16 - Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Acts 8:36-39 - And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Conclusion
There are millions and millions of good people good Christians in organization that do lots of good things and yet they are not members of a church according to the rules and examples we see in scripture. You don’t have to be a member of a Biblical church to be saved, but the odds of knowing how to be saved in a counterfeit church will not in your favor. If they are so wrong about so much then they are probably wrong so vital a truth as how to be saved by grace through faith.
If you are saved, then find a church that meets the Bible standards we studied. If you are depending on your church and your connection to it, to save you, then you really are not in a true church and a lot more is at stake than just these teaching points.
Accept Jesus as your personal savior, and by faith accept His death upon the cross as God’s gift of grace. This is salvation and when salvation is real, then finding the real church will be a lot easier with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and God’s word.

Baptists, General Sketch of the.—
(I would say this is one of the better very brief outlines
of Baptist History out there- I would disagree however with
the assertion that Providence was the first Baptist Church in the
new world- however this is just before more research on
Newport and Dr John Clarke began to surface.)
The Baptist denomination was founded by Jesus during his earthly ministry. Next to the Teacher of Nazareth, our great leaders were the apostles, and the elders, bishops, and evangelists, who preached Christ in their times. The instructions of our Founder are contained in the four Gospels, the heaven-given teachings of our earliest ministers are in the inspired Epistles. The first Baptist missionary journal was the Acts of the Apostles. For the first two centuries, all the congregations of the Church Universal (Catholic) were Baptist communities. During the two succeeding centuries, the baptism of unconscious babes had such a limited existence that it is scarcely worthy of notice. During the fifth and sixth centuries the baptism of catechumens, that is, of catechized persons instructed beforehand for the sacred rite, was still common throughout Christendom. Though the candidates were constantly becoming younger, they always professed their own faith. Nor was the baptism of catechumens laid aside entirely in Rome itself in the ninth century. From the beginning of the fifth-century infants commonly were baptized when very ill to take away Adam’s guilt, lest they might die and be lost. And though there were a few cases of infant baptism before this period, it was about this time it began to spread, but it required a good many centuries to gain the complete mastery of the Church Universal (Catholic); and before it succeeded, heretics, so-called, flourished outside of the great corrupted Church Universal (Catholic). And even infant baptism itself, when it sprang up, had to take the apostolic idea that faith was a prerequisite to baptism, and borrow faith from the sponsors or parents of the child, or from the whole church, to make good its claim to the initiatory rite of the Christian Church. And it follows this course still.
The first great error among Christians was that water baptism in some way removed the sins of penitents. This heresy was common in the third century. About the same time, the Lord’s Supper began to be regarded by some as possessing soul-healing efficacy for him who partook of it, and a magical power to protect the dwelling, or a ship at sea, if a portion of the bread was in the one or the other. These two follies led Christians to magnify the minister enormously, who could impart the soul-cleansing immersion, and consecrate the heart- healing, and house- and ship-protecting, sacramental supper. ‘These heresies, with their priestly reverence, fostered sacerdotal ambition, and led to the creation of gradations of rank among the clergy, until in process of time the Universal Church had little to show but a pyramid of priests, with the inferior ministry as its broad base, and the pope at its head, and two sacred ceremonies, the one giving imaginary salvation through baptismal water, and the other the supposed body and blood of the Lord, through real bread and wine. And as evils grow at a rapid rate, these perversions of baptism and the Lord’s Supper generated the whole brood of Romish ceremonies and superstitions.
When this conviction about the power of baptism to take away the sins of believers became common in the third century, then for the first time the baptism of unconscious babes was thought of; but in that century there is only one case of the kind, and not many more in the fourth; but in the fifth, Augustine of Hippo began to frighten the Christian world with the falsehood that infants would perish through Adam’s sin without baptism. At the same time bits of the bread of the Lord’s Supper were forced upon the unconscious child, or a little of the wine, to give double salvation from two redeeming sacraments. As we have said, for long ages after this hosts in the Church Universal fought this wicked rite, which usurped the place of Christ’s holy sacrament, and induced the Saviour’s servants to trust saving water, instead of the blood of atonement and the arm of omnipotence.
When these superstitions gained extensive sway in the Church Universal (Catholic), communities of Christians sprang up in various quarters, some of which held the old truths of our mighty Founder whom John baptized in the River Jordan when he had reached the age of full manhood. The Paulicians, originating in the seventh century in Armenia, were Baptists. This community, brought into life by reading the Word of God, flourished for a time in its native place, then it sent missionaries into Thrace, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Servia, Italy, France, Germany, and other countries, and gathered millions of adherents, and terrified popes, and drew kings with crusading armies of vast strength to kill its members. Between five hundred thousand and a million of them were put to death in France in the thirteenth century.
This person was most commonly known in Europe as Albigenses, but they bore many names and malignant reproaches, and the worst doctrines and practices were falsely imputed to them. The Paulogician, Bogomilian, and Albigenses existed in strength in Bosnia till 1463 and were found there till a later day.
From the twelfth century till the Reformation the Waldenses occupied a conspicuous place in the hatred of Catholic Europe, and in the violence of fierce persecutions. And some of these illustrious sufferers were Baptists.
In the same century which gave birth to the Waldenses, the Henricians and Petrobrusians commenced their existence as gospel communities and held forth the lamp of life to the perishing so that large numbers were saved. These so-called heretics were Baptists.
During that mighty upheaval in the days of Luther which shook the papacy to its lowest foundations, men with Anabaptist principles appeared in every direction with a suddenness that startled the world, and they were welcomed immediately with cruel greetings to foul dungeons and barbarous deaths. Their blood flowed in torrents upon the continent of Europe, and even in England it was wickedly shed.
It is not improbable that the ancient Britons were opponents of infant baptism when the Romish missionary Augustine met them in 603. But the evidence furnished by Bede, Eccles. Hist., lib. ii., cap. 2, is not sufficient to establish this. In the early period of the Reformation Anabaptists, be- came quite numerous in England, and they excited the indignation of King Henry VIII. and the clergy, and they are often alluded to in denunciatory language in public documents. A little further on they were subjected to cruel persecutions. In the time of Edward VI., Joan of Kent, who carried Bibles into the palace of Henry VIII. for distribution, concealed under her apron, when the penalty for the act was death, was given to the flames by King Edward by the over-persuasion of Archbishop Cranmer. Others shared her harsh fate, but Baptist doctrines spread, to the dismay of the clergy, and found a place in hearts opened of God in all parts of the kingdom. And even in Scotland mighty John Knox found it necessary to write a book against them. Queen Elizabeth and James I. treated them with royal barbarity, and Charles I. would have imitated their example had not the rising spirit of Anglo-Saxon liberty put a bit in his mouth, and finally cut off the tyrant’s head. For some years preceding and following 1649, the date of this event, the Baptists enjoyed extraordinary prosperity ; they filled the English army in Ireland with officers, and they had a large number over the troops located in Scotland and England, and even in Cromwell’s own regiment. So sturdy was their republicanism that many of them could see no difference between Charles I. reigning without a Parliament and Oliver Crom- well governing without a Legislature. The Protector distrusted them, and procured a letter from the celebrated London Baptist minister, William Kiffin, which others signed, exhorting their brethren in Ireland to submission. (Hanserd Knollys Society’s Confessions of Faith, p. 322.) Cromwell was so concerned about the opposition of some members of this now powerful body that he had spies to watch their movements and report their supposed conspiracies. ‘Thurloe gives the letter of ‘one of these spies describing the proceedings of a Baptist Association in England and mentioning its prayers, letters, sermons, and speakers just as the proceedings of such a body might be described today. Generals Harrison, Lilburn, Overton, and Ludlow, and others in the army; Admiral-General Richard Deane, of both the army and the navy, Admiral Sir John Lawson, and a large number of other distinguished officers of the navy, reflected a glory upon themselves and their Baptist brethren which created fear or joy throughout their island home. It was said that alarm lest the Baptists should seize the government after Cromwell’s death actually led the Presbyterians to unite with the Episcopalians in bringing from Holland to the English throne Charles II., the greatest profligate that ever dishonored the family relation. In the reign of Charles, and his brother James, the most wicked persecutions were applied to Dissenters, and while the English Presbyterians from them and from subsequent heresy were annihilated, the Baptists received blows the effects of which they feel in England today.
They are now divided into General and Particular Baptists, the former being the smaller body. The word ‘‘General” was put in their name to de- scribe their doctrine of the atonement; they hold Arminian views of it and of all the doctrines of grace; the word “ Particular’ was originally assumed to show that this section of the English Baptists held a limited atonement and Calvinistical views of the doctrines of grace. These British Baptists have been enterprising, and have had many distinguished men, but they have been sadly hindered by persecutions and by the social tyranny of a powerful and intolerant state church. There are in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland 2620 Baptist churches, with a membership of 269,836.
Roger Williams, a Welshman by birth, an Episcopalian by training, a Congregationalist by choice, and a graduate of the University of Cambridge, England, came to New England in 1631. Two or three years afterward he was appointed assistant minister to the Congregational church of Salem, Mass. While there he denied the right of the magistrates to punish offenses of a purely religious character, and ‘‘in one year’s time he filled the place with principles of rigid separation (from the Church of England) and tending to Anabaptism.” For these “ high crimes and misdemeanors” he was finally ordered to leave the colony, and failing to render obedience to the lordly Puritans of that day, and learning that he was about to be sent home by force, he fled in the depth of winter to the Narragansett Indians, and established the city of Providence in 1636, and the first Baptist church in America in that city in 1639. The community which gathered around him adopted from him the old Baptist doctrine of absolute freedom of conscience, and incorporated it in their laws; and when Joshua Verin, a little time after the settlement of Providence, restrained his wife from at- tending some religious meetings, he was disfranchised as a punishment for his offense.
The church founded by Mr. Williams is still in existence, and it is regarded with veneration as the first Baptist church in the New World. It worships in a noble building erected one hundred and five years ago.
In Massachusetts, cruel persecutions were inflicted on Baptists and Quakers for a long period. In Virginia, the hand of legal violence was frequently raised with wicked force against our saintly fathers, but in Rhode Island, long under the control of the Baptists, whose governor at this time worships in a Baptist church, no man ever suffered any penalty for his religious convictions.
Bancroft, the historian, says of Roger Williams: ‘He was the first person in modern Christendom to assert in its plenitude the doctrine of the liberty of conscience, the equality of opinions before the law; and in its defense, he was the harbinger of Milton (a Baptist), the precursor and the superior of Jeremy Taylor. . . . Williams would permit persecution of no opinion, of no religion, leaving heresy unharmed by law, and orthodoxy unprotected by the terrors of penal laws.”’ Vol. i., 375. “Freedom of conscience, unlimited freedom of mind, was from the first the trophy of the Baptists.” ii., 67. This is justly said of Roger Williams, and it is all true except the statement that he was ‘‘ the first person in modern Christendom” to assert this doctrine. Leonard Busher, an English Baptist, published in London in 1614 “ Religious Peace,”’ in which Williams’s doctrine is repeatedly asserted. This was more than twenty years before Mr. Williams broached it, and Busher had many predecessors in announcing his inspired principles. This little work is in the Hanserd Knollys volume of “Traits on Liberty of Conscience,’ London, 1846. The blessed truth Mr. Williams unfolded on this continent his Baptist brethren everywhere preached, and they have given it sovereign sway in all this land.
The Baptists of this country hold that the Word of God is the only authority in religion, that its teachings are to be sacredly observed, and that to religious doctrines and observances there can be no additions except from it; they hold that a man should repent and be saved through faith in the meritorious Redeemer before he is baptized; that immersion alone is Scripture baptism; that only by it can the candidate represent. his death to the world, burial with Christ, and resurrection to new- ness of life; that baptism is a prerequisite to the Lord’s Supper; they hold the. doctrines of the Trinity, of eternal and personal election, total depravity, regeneration by the Holy Spirit, justification by the imputed righteousness of Christ, progressive sanctification, final perseverance « special providence, immediate and eternal glory for the righteous after death, and instant and unending misery for the ungodly. They hold the doctrinal articles of the Presbyterian Church, and they only differ from that honored Calvinistical community in the mode and subjects of baptism, and in their congregational church government. They hold that all regenerated believers are saved, whether they are immersed or sprinkled, or lack both ceremonies; and they insist on the immersion of believers because Christ was immersed and because he enjoins immersion upon all believers.
In this country, we have 38 colleges and theological seminaries, and many superior academies. We have in North America 63 religious periodicals. The Baptist motto ever has been, “ Let there be light, secular, sacred, and redeeming, till it covers the earth and bathes humanity in its shining wayes”
In the United States, we have 24,794 churches, 15,401 ministers, and 2,200,000 members, which, with adherents, young and.old, give us more than 5,000,000 of persons who hold our principles. In the various provinces of Canada, and in the British West India Islands, there are 849 churches, with 89,938 members. Baptist missions in Germany, France, Sweden, and other sections of Europe, and in Asia and Africa, will be noticed under the names of the countries in which they are located. In the world, there are 29,400 Baptist churches, with a membership of 2,663,172, which, with other adherents in Sunday schools and congregations, would probably give us between 7,000,000 and 8,000,000 of Baptists. This does not include de- nominations in the United States that hold be- liever’s immersion, which are not Regular Baptists, such as the Old-School Baptists, Winebrennarians or Church of God, Seventh-Day Baptists, Six-Principle Baptists, Tunkers, Disciples, Adventists, and Free-Will Baptists. These communities have 6951 churches and 615,541 members.
The origin and growth of the denomination in each of the United States will be found in sketches under the names of the States in this work.
The Baptists have a firm confidence in the truth, and in the ultimate triumph of their principles; and while they will not sacrifice a jot of inspired teaching to gain the goodwill of the whole Christian family, they love all true believers of every name, from Pascal, the Catholic, to Joseph John Gurney, the Friend

Why Study Baptist History Short answer:
by Thomas E. Kresal
WHY DO YOU TEACH BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY AND CAN YOU GIVE ME SCRIPTURES TO BACK IT UP?
The vast majority of “Christendom” is a masquerade and built by the father of lies. (John 8:44). When satan could not defeat Christ, vanquish his Holy Scripture or martyr all Christ’ disciples ‘ol Beelzebub created a counterfeit church. By studying Baptist history we can identify the New Testament church that Christ built during his earthly ministry.
Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who cannot lie (Titus 1:2) promised the perpetuity of his church (Mt.16:18) to which he founded and built upon the foundation of the Apostles of which he was the Chief cornerstone (Eph. 2:20)Church by definition is a “called out local assembly” (ekklesia) of baptized (immersion) believers who are organized to preach the Gospel to the lost, and teach/make disciples of all professed and baptized members.
It has officers and elders as described in Eph. 4:11, 1 Tim 3:1,10; 5:17; 1 Peter 5:1,5 and has the Lord’s table (Mt. 26:28-30; I Cor. 12:23-29) & Baptism (Mt. 3:13-17; 28:19-20; I Cor. 12:13) as the only two visible ordinances and an autonomous Biblical theocentric church governance (Col. 1:18, Eph. 3:21, I Cor. 1:3;12:12).Scriptural baptism – the authority, subject, method and purpose has separated the true NT church from pseudo church organizations since the days of Romish apostasy. Countless millions of our Baptist forefathers have been martyred (many by professing “Christians”) for “the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:3)
For this purpose NT churches are founded under the ordaining authority of NT churches (Acts 13:1-3, Heb. 6:1-2). When individuals start a church & baptize w/o authority they are operating by means of the earliest doctrinal divisions in Christendom. Their doctrine will ultimately reveal an invisible, universal church synonymous with salvation. (Folks who believe the body of Christ is composed of all the saved & who believe the “true church” is the realm of salvation to which they are Spirit baptized into this universal body of Christ).
Thus their baptism depicts their doctrinal root that is tied to the great whore (RCC) and her daughters (Protestants) of a federal church/state. We find many Baptists have traded the apostolic faith for the deluding influence of ecumenical, Protestant fundamentalism particularly evident since the Niagara Conferences of the 1890’s and early 1900’s of which the protestant Scofield gained much influence among unsuspecting Baptists. Since baptism was not considered a “fundamental” of the faith it was effectively marginalized and therefore “Protestantized”.
We see from Christ’s example that baptism is not simply a matter of immersion. It is a matter of God-ordained authority. Jesus Christ identified with John in receiving his God-ordained baptism (John 1:6, Mt.3:15-16). It was that same baptism that He gave to His disciples, who baptized under His authority (Jn. 4: 1-2, Mt.28:19-20).
We have external evidence that the Lord’s church practiced this ordinance from the early part of His earthly ministry. The commission came with a promise of an empowerment (Acts 1:8) on the day of Pentecost. The preaching of the word on that day resulted in 3k souls being saved & then “ADDED UNTO” the Lord’s church by means of baptism (Acts 2:41).
Many peoples in history have held to the Biblical doctrines delivered by Christ and his first church and are recognized throughout history as the Waldenses, Donatists, Novations, Albigenses, Henricians, Petrobrussians, Paulicians, Anabaptists and Baptist.
It is incumbent upon us not only to publish our history, heritage and distinctives as a beacon of light for every generation to follow but to honor those folks who have sacrificed their life and treasure for the cause of Christ and his kingdom.
To God be the glory!

Calvinism and the Baptists
by Dr. Laurence M. Vance
The following is from Dr. Laurence M. Vance's excellent recently updated and revised work entitled, "The Other Side of Calvinism." This definitive work is a 800-page treatment of the theological system known as Calvinism. It is extensively footnoted. Please direct any questions or comments for the author to Vance Publications. Placed on the Internet by permission of the author. Dr. Laurence M. Vance's e-mail address is: vancepub@vancepublications.com
The controversy over Calvinism among the Baptists calls for special attention. Not only has this debate raged among the Baptists for hundreds of years, the greatest exponents of Calvinism today are not the Presbyterian or Reformed but the Baptists. The fact that a Baptist says he is not a Calvinist means nothing, for the Baptists, more than any other Calvinists, when seeking to draw attention away from the name of Calvin, use the phrase "Doctrines of Grace" as a metaphor for Calvinism.105 Another term used by Baptists is "Sovereign Grace."106 The term "grace" by itself is also used to stand for the doctrines of Calvinism.107 One Calvinistic Baptist even wrote a book called Grace Not Calvinism.108 But just as was pointed out previously, if Calvinism is the doctrine of grace found in the Bible then this implies that if you disagree with Calvinism then you are denying salvation by grace. Some Calvinistic Baptists get downright offended when they are accused of being Calvinists. Joseph Wilson, the former editor of a Calvinistic Baptist newspaper, went on record as saying:
Recent Question: What are the best church history books? 5/10/22
Remember church history should be Baptist history- the other stuff falls into false doctrine to some extent or another. Above under featured there is a list of free books you can download- There are many selections free for the downloading- also if you click under "topics" there is a bibliography there- this includes works that are in print only as well.
To start- how about a starter work- the Trail of Blood is a little pamphlet that gives a very basic overview- it is by no means comprehensive.
Another starter work that I recommend is "Faithful Baptist Witness" by Phil Stringer this is in print only. He did this as a basic introduction to get into people's hands. Another short work is Orchard's Baptist History.
To get into larger works I would recommend JT Christian's Baptist History. DB Ray's Baptist Succession is also very good. Thomas Armitage also has an excellent one but it is a pretty big read in two volumes.
The best American Baptist History book is hands down "America in Crimson Red" by Beller- excellent book you will have trouble putting it down. It is in print only from Prairie Fire Press. This is just a few basic ideas- the Bibliographies have many more with notes.

Some great resources for you. I know we have a lot of requests on where to find books and I know the need really is great around the world for pastors to have good materials. Often those are unobtainable or unaffordable. We are blessed in America to have a lot of bookstores but being honest the average Christian bookstore here is a minefield filled with false doctrine. Many of the good books are older. If you look under announcements there is an extensive list of FREE books that you can get online.

Here is an excellent article I read
some time ago! Roger Fulk
Thanks, Dan Nelson for your permission to publish this article
How Studying Baptist Beliefs and History are Inseparable
By Dan Nelson, Baptist Historian, and Author
Baptist beliefs and their history are intertwined. It is necessary to study both to
gain and appreciate Baptist beliefs and history. This study will help us understand the uniqueness of Baptists among many religious groups. The great stories of courage and sacrifice help us comprehend why we believe what we believe and how they have brought us to the present juncture of many religious groups crying for anonymity and no real distinctions that set them apart.
There are basic beliefs that may be shared by some other groups but are as fully pronounced or defined as Baptists have illustrated them. It would have been easy for the Baptists to join in with others in the Reformation and just tolerate infant baptism for the truth of the justification of faith. Yet, they believed believers; baptism was important and many martyrs like Balthasar Hubmaier, Felix Manz, and Michael Sattler paid dearly for it because of the state enforcement of religion in Austria, Germany (the birthplace of the Reformation), and Switzerland. They were persecuted and killed by Catholics as well as Protestants.
Obadiah Holmes was whipped on the Boston Common in 1651 for being a Baptist and handing out literature endorsing believer's baptism. The state church arrangement led to his imprisonment and punishment.
Thomas Gould's refusal to have his child christened and their subsequent starting of the First Baptist Church in Boston was in response to this understood practice of the Congregational church there and insistence if must be adhered to by all citizens. The church met in secret on Noodles Island outside Boston and for a while, Gould was imprisoned because he believed in individual conversion and not sponsorship salvation that infant baptism fostered'
In America, William Screven and his congregation were marched out of town in
Kittery, Maine, and threatened with hanging for teaching believer's baptism. They were told not to come back or be hung. This led to the founding of the first Baptist church in the South in Charleston because the Baptists refused to live in a religious environment that taught error.
John Weatherford and over 50 other Baptist preachers just a few years before the Revolutionary War were jailed in Virginia for refusing to be licensed by the state church and continuing to baptize believers. He preached from jail and his
the congregation came to hear him with nine people converted and baptized
after Patrick Henry came and plead his case before the militant governmental officials resulting in his release.
John Leland and other Baptist preachers were persecuted for being Baptists even after the American War of Independence. He talked with James Madison extensively about the first amendment rights of Baptists and all Christians not to be discriminated against by the government and the refusal to establish a state church. Baptists have always believed in complete freedom to practice their faith because of their persecution, and harassment in the old world as well as the new.
We could go on and on with stories such as Adoniram Judson and Luther Rice studying the Scriptures and understanding that believer's baptism is the only New Testament baptism. They had been appointed by the Congregational church and were on their initial missionary journey overseas. They requested believer's baptism when they arrived in India meeting the English Baptist missionary William Carey and being baptized in his church there. They became Baptists and continued to pursue their missionary call. Could their decision have something to do with them becoming one of the greatest missionarie; and missions' promoters of all time?
The stand that Baptists took for distinct doctrines has led to the expansion of the Baptist work and brought us to the place we are today. These truths illustrated by these stories help immensely to see how we have a faith worth contending for and lost among the ash heap of generic Christianity.
Believing in these truths, it has been my privilege to contribute some to a lack of understanding about our Baptist forefathers and the truths they were willing to suffer for in two books I have authored.
Baptist Revival: Reaffirming Baptist Principles in Today's Changing Church Scene is a reference tool for those new to your church or uninformed about prominent Baptist beliefs. I attempt to explain our beliefs with historical and biblical references hopefully in a language anyone can understand. The book has seven chapters dealing with the church, ordinances, the church's role with government, church structure for decision-making and ministry, individual responsibility in salvation, what priesthood of believers means, and Biblical authority in our faith and practice. There are several appendices regarding Baptist Confessions and my sermon: Twelve Misassumptions about Baptists.
Baptist Biographies and Happenings in American History offers a concise and fact-filled chronological chain of biographies from the beginning of America to the present day. My book intends to help you understand continuous Baptist History through the events and individuals who have been influential in the movement through its expansion. The stories of these figures are inspirational as well as challenging. I have been researching Baptist History in America for the last several years, gathering information and piecing all these together in book form. There is information one can profit from in the discovery of these interesting insights. I have been an ordained Baptist Pastor for 49 years and have taught and written on Baptist History in Bible College, my teaching in the church, and preaching.
I wrote Baptist Biographies because most Baptist biography books had information about one or a few individuals. I wanted people to understand the history in a continuous, chronological manner through this book divided into two sections of establishment and expansion. The biographies are not exhaustive but give general information and hopefully inspiration studying these biographies of Baptists who have had an impact on our belief and practice.
Both books underscore the truth that our beliefs cannot be separated from
our history. Our beliefs have endured through the example of many courageous leaders in the Baptist Movement.

https://www.facebook.com/.../permalink/1107485922779889/ In addition there are other posts there that list resources for finding and ordering books. I thought I would also mention a couple of other resources for getting Free commentaries (I would suggest Matthew Henry's commentaries, Barnes Notes, Spurgeon's Treasury of David for the Psalms and the Pulpit Commentary) www.archive.org has all of these for free online. Just search by title or author. Another resource is www.onlinebible.net (You might need to go to www.onlinebible.org as net is labeled North America) They have an electronic Bible available for free for download on PC Android or Apple. The starter pack comes with KJV and some other resources. (I like the fact that they don't give you a lot of the junk new translations with the download like a lot of other electronic versions do) Barnes and Matthew Henry and other resources are also available for free and you can download Bibles in different languages (they do have a lot of Textus Receptus based Bibles) I hope these are a blessing.
FREE BAPTIST HISTORY BOOKS-
Acquiring Baptist History books can be a difficult proposition. Many have been long out of print, and when available often can be expensive (even reprints). This is especially true for the many preachers in different countries. I wanted to make this list available of free books that you can download or read online. Most are taken from www.archive.org as well as Google Books. Most all of these are older works that are out of copyright. (So this list misses newer works such as America in Crimson Red or the Faithful Baptist Witness) You can read them online or download them in various forms. You can also download a free kindle reader at Amazon- (however of note sometimes the kindle scans may be a bit garbled at places. (Older books from the 1700’s that have the larger “s” will often convert these to an “f” in the Kindle format as well.) I would also encourage everyone to visit Baptist History Homepage- http://baptisthistoryhomepage.com/ They have a tremendous amount of information there and additional links. There are some additional online resources near the end of the page.
STARTER WORKS
GENERAL WORKS- these are larger works that are more comprehensive. In their scope they trace the general flow of Baptist history.
• A HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH FROM THE BIRTH OF CHRIST TO THE XVIII CENTURY- WILLIAM JONES 1812 This book is a little funny to describe-It shows perpetuity but is kind of a general church history too. Its material on the Waldensians is excellent. The book is a heavy read but comprehensive.
• A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE BAPTIST DENOMINATION- David Benedict (Note largely US)
REFERENCE WORKS
• THE BAPTIST ENCYCLOPEDIA- William Cathcart- This is not intended as a history but rather a reference source. There are many hundreds of Baptist Biographies here.
• As a note archive and the other resources have a tremendous amount of Biographies available. These books are a starting point to give you some names you might become interested in. Not everybody has a book written about them, but many have shorter biographies here and on Baptist History Homepage.
AMERICAN BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORIES- I will put up individual states in a separate post- these are general works covering the US (NOTE several of the general histories notably Armitage have large sections on the US)
• HISTORY OF THE BAPTISTS- Isaac Backus (Proper title- A History of New England with Particular Reference to the Denomination of Christians called Baptists)
• ANNALS OF THE AMERICAN PULPIT- VOLUME 6 (The Baptists) This series of books was a series of Biographical sketches in various denominations. Volume 6 is the one that deals with the Baptists. Good sketches of various preacher’s lives. https://archive.org/.../annalsamericanp00unkngoog/page/n10
BRITISH AND EUROPEAN BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORIES
• History of the English Baptists- Thomas Crosby. This is one that I still have to read- massive work of four volumes
• A History of the English Baptists- Joseph Ivimey- I have not had a chance to review this yet but it looks good-
MARTYROLOGIES- These books are primarily descriptions of those who paid the ultimate price for their faith in Christ.
• FOXE’S CHRISTIAN MARTYRS OF THE WORLD-JOHN FOXE although this is not only a Baptist history book per se, it does contain accounts of the persecution of the Baptists. Foxe himself was an Anglican and did leave out many accounts of Anabaptists. https://archive.org/details/JohnFoxeBookOfMartyrs
• MARTYR’S MIRROR Thielman VanBragt- This is an intimidating book- nearly 1200 pages and is the most comprehensive Martyrology for the period- it goes by year. It will move you to tears reading it. There are over 4,000 here that gave their lives. https://archive.org/details/MartyrsMirror
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ONLINE
NOTE Works not included-
Until about 1880 when William Whitsett advocated the theory that we had arisen from English Separatists almost all Baptist history advocated our decent from the Anabaptists in one form or another. Some held direct descent and others spiritual kinship.
Whitsitt’s view held that the Baptists only started immersion in 1640. JT Christian and others thoroughly rebutted this view and Whitsitt’s faulty evidence but much damage was done. Today a great many Baptists hold this view (and probably most modern Baptist historians). There are tidbits of history that may be found in these books but I caution their origin theory. (I will note that I do have some of these in my library) Authors who hold this view include Vedder (Short History of the Baptists) Torbet, (history of the Baptists) Leon McBeth- (various histories) as well as Whitsitt himself.

Appendix B Ten Affirmations Concerning Our Baptist Heritage
Page 262, “The Collegiate Baptist History Workbook”, by James R. Beller. Prairie Fire Press, Copyright 2002, Second Edition Copyright 2005, Third Printing 2006
- Baptists are ancient, and our ancestry can be traced through the vital principles established and set forth by our Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples in New Testament churches.
- Baptists are not “Protestants,” as our testimony extends much further in history than that of Martin Luther or John Calvin.
- Baptists are not “Reformed” in theology or practice, for our view of the church could never allow the marriage of church and state.
- Baptists are not “Calvinists,” for the doctrines of grace were believed and preached long before John Calvin preached in Geneva.
- Baptists are not “Arminian” in theology, for our forefathers preached the Gospel with fervor long before the time of Jacob Arminius, and believed they were enabled by God to persevere.
- Immersion was in common use among Baptists before 1641. We reject the 1641 theory of William Whitsitt and oppose the conclusions of Henry Veddar about baptism. We view as suspect the modern histories of Robert Baker, Leon McBeth, Walter Shurden, Robert G. Torbet, and James Edward McGoldrick as they submit to the thoroughly disproved theory of William Whitsitt.
- Baptist heritage is far older than Fundamentalism*, (*Interdenominational Fundamentalism of the turn of the twentieth century) or the era of the city-wide revival campaigns, or the old Evangelical Alliance.
- Because Baptists have suffered at the hands of Papists and Pedobaptistic Protestants alike, we ought to venerate and remember our historic testimony far above the testimony of persecuting enemies. That is, we ought to revere the testimony of the Paulicians, Peter de Bruys, Henry of Clugny, Balthasar Hubmaier, Henry D’anvers, John Clarke, Obadiah Holmes, Valentine Wightman, Isaac Backus, Shubal Stearns, Samuel Harris, John Leland, John Taylor, Isaac McCoy, et. al. These names should be more commonly known among Baptist than those of D.L Moody, Ira Sankey, R.A. Torey, Sam Jones, Gipsy Smith, John Wilbur Chapman or Billy Sunday.
- Infant baptism is the badge of antichrist, and flirtation with the badge is akin to treason against God’s word.
- Ignorance of Baptist heritage, which is so infectious in our pulpits and pews today, is dangerous and must be over come with a renewed teaching of our Baptist heritage and heroes of past generations.
Brother Beller was the most prolific Baptist historian of our generation. I highly recommend his many books on Baptist history such as America in Crimson Red, Sacred Betrayal, The Collegiate Baptist History Workbook, Soul of St. Louis, etc. Please visit his book store at: click below …

America’s fundamental problem is not systemic racism; it is systemic wickedness. And we are convinced that the root problem is the nation’s corrupt, worldly, lukewarm churches. That is the root problem in the black communities and in every community.
Since the church is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15), the New Testament church is the most important institution on earth. The greatest need of every community and every nation is New Testament churches. Nothing can take its place. But in fulfillment of Bible prophecy, the vast majority of churches today are apostate. I think of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Unitarian, Seventh-day Adventist, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, the World Council of Churches and all of their affiliates, and many others. “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:5).
What about “evangelicals”? Most are leavened with rock & roll worldliness and cultural liberalism (they are friends with, and conformed to, the world, which is spiritual adultery), charismatic and contemplative mysticism, nothing versions (e.g., The Message, the New Living, the Good News), textually corrupt versions (e.g., the NIV, the ESV), kingdom now theology, the social justice gospel, positivism and judge not-ism. They have renounced “separatism” even though it is a clear Bible doctrine.
What about “fundamentalists”? A few exceptions notwithstanding, most of the old non-denominational fundamentalist Bible churches are New Evangelical today. The fight is gone; lines are moving. The outspoken have become silent. The holy have become worldly. The black of an unhesitating stand for the truth of God’s Word is blending into evangelical gray. The gradual acceptance of contemporary worship music is building bridges to the “wider church,” which is the apostate “one world church.”
What about fundamental Baptists? They, too, overall, are morphing into a wishy-washy, “Baptist-flavored” evangelicalism. Most, in our experience, are NEARLY POWERLESS. They might still have the right Bible and be sound in doctrine and even have “separation” in their church covenant and still hold to sacred music (usually in a lifeless, ritualistic, uneducated manner, just as a matter of vain tradition). But they are so pathetically powerless. An older preacher, who founded and pastored a large church and has preached in hundreds of churches, recently told me, “I’m sure I couldn’t join 50 churches in America, and I’m being generous. Even many pastors who have [good] music and dress standards are weak and won’t ‘rock the boat’ for anything. It’s a sad day. Most of the churches that I could recommend are new works pastored by young men.”
Consider a simple test. How many churches in America could pass this very basic biblical test, and in truth the test should be much expanded.
(1) The test of conversions. How many churches have regenerating power? A massive number of “Bible-believing” churches are seeing frighteningly few life-changing, “turn around and go the other way,” biblical conversions. If the baptismal waters are stirred, it is for children who, when they reach maturity, launch right out into the world, thus demonstrating their unregeneracy.
(2) The test of the family. How many churches have the power to build godly homes? A New Testament church is tasked with building godly homes that can raise a godly seed for Christ. Yet a great number of Bible-believing churches don’t have the power to make fathers who are the spiritual leaders of their homes and mothers who are the spiritual keepers of the home. Look at the worldly character of the homes. Look at the entertainment, the social media, the conversation, the priorities. The homes are the products of churches.
(3) The test of discipleship. How many churches have the power to produce real disciples of Jesus Christ? God’s Word plainly states that every church member is to be equipped to observe all things that Christ has commanded and to be presented perfect in Christ (Matthew 28:20; Col. 1:28). That is the work of a New Testament church, and if a church can’t do what Christ has commanded there is something deeply, fundamentally wrong. Where are the churches that are taking this seriously and where this is really, effectually happening?
(4) The test of Bible skill. How many churches have the power to produce passionate, skillful Bible students? The Bible plainly says that every saint is to be skillful in Scripture, both in ability to use it and to apply it to daily living so that he or she has a biblical testing mindset (Hebrews 5:12-14).
(5) The test of the youth. How many churches have the power to win the hearts of youth to Christ and holiness? Youth are the product of the church and the home; neither institution can escape responsibility. I often ask pastors, “How many of the young people are on fire for the Lord? Are they passionate to become skillful Bible students? Are they surrendered to seeking God’s perfect will by the standard of Romans 12?” Powerless churches have produced a wicked nation.
(6) The test of evangelism and missionary vision. Churches are dying because their evangelistic vision and zeal has largely died. The pastors aren’t leading properly in this business, and the people are lukewarm or entirely cold. Christ commanded that the gospel be preached to every soul (Mr. 16:15), and that is a continual, unending responsibility. To get the gospel to every soul in the community requires planning by the leaders and 100% participation by God’s people. Christ commanded that the gospel be preached in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria, and unto the ends of the earth (Ac. 1:8). Every church is to take this responsibility with utmost seriousness and strive to present the gospel to its own town, community, county, district, state, province, country, and beyond. Every church is to be an Antioch church. The church that is not doing this is a disobedient, dying church.

VCYAmerica

There are basic beliefs that may be shared by some other groups but are as fully prounced or defined as Baptists have illustrated them. It would have been easy for the Baptists to join in with others in the Reformation and just tolerate infant baptism for the truth of the justification of faith. Yet, they believed believer's; baptism was important and many martyrs like Balthasar Hubmaier, Felix Manz, and Michael Sattler paid dearly for it because of the state enforcement of religion in Austria, Germany (the birthplace of the Reformation), and Switzerland. They were persecuted and killed by Catholics as well as Protestants.
Obadiah Holmes was whipped on the Boston Common in 1651 for being a Baptist and handing out literature endorsing believer's baptism. The state church arrangement led to his imprisonment and punishmen.
He preached from jail and his
congregation came to hear him with nine people converted and baptized
after Patrick Henry came and plead his case before the militant governmental officials resulting in his release.

Baptist History Homepage Cunningly Devised Myths
By Rosco Brong
Religious Myths do Not Come from the Bible,
but from Depraved Minds.
That Others Must Interpret for us Baptists through the centuries have shed their blood for the principle of soul liberty, the freedom and competence of the individual soul to approach God directly through Jesus Christ as revealed in His word, without the necessity of any other mediator or of any authoritative teacher except the Holy Spirit.
But now we hear from so called Baptists the strange Catholic doctrine that ordinary Christians cannot understand the Bible: that some higher authority in the world must interpret for us and we are bound to accept that interpretation. I have heard a Baptist Sunday School “teacher” stumbling through the comments in a “quarterly,” hardly able to read, but practically sure that the comments were inspired and infallible. I have heard a Baptist “preacher” with a seminary degree for whom the answer to any theological question is to be found in what “Dr. Big Name” said. Such “teachers” and “preachers” may be far apart educationally, but spiritually they are equally to be pitied. Jesus said: “If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself” (John 7:17). “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth but because ye know it and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him” (I John 2:18-27.)

They train by studying the original intensely. When a counterfeit is presented the flaws will be obvious because they have spent countless hours looking at the authentic. Counterfeiting is really not the purview of the FBI. A special team of the Secret Service, under the auspices of the Treasury Department investigates counterfeiting.

WHY DO YOU TEACH BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY
AND CAN YOU GIVE ME SCRIPTURES TO BACK IT UP?
·
Why Study Baptist History
Short answer: The vast majority of “Christendom” is a masquerade and built by the father of lies.
Church by definition is a "called out local assembly" (ekklesia) of baptized (immersion) believers who are organized to preach the Gospel to the lost, and teach/make disciples of all professed and baptized members. It has officers and elders as described in Eph. 4:11, 1 Tim 3:1,10; 5:17; 1 Peter 5:1,5 and has the Lord's table (Mt. 26:28-30; I Cor. 12:23-29) & Baptism (Mt. 3:13-17; 28:19-20; I Cor. 12:13) as the only two visible ordinances and an autonomous Biblical theocentric church governance (Col. 1:18, Eph. 3:21, I Cor. 1:3;12:12).
Scriptural baptism – the authority, subject, method and purpose has separated the true NT church from pseudo church organizations since the days of Romish apostasy.
(Folks who believe the body of Christ is composed of all the saved & who believe the "true church" is the realm of salvation to which they are Spirit baptized into this universal body of Christ) Thus their baptism depicts their doctrinal root that is tied to the great whore (RCC) and her daughters (Protestants) of a federal church/state. We find many Baptists have traded the apostolic faith for the deluding influence of ecumenical, Protestant fundamentalism particularly evident since the Niagara Conferences of the 1890’s and early 1900’s of which the protestant Scofield gained much influence among unsuspecting Baptists. Since baptism was not considered a “fundamental" of the faith it was effectively marginalized and therefore “Protestantized”.
We see from Christ's example that baptism is not simply a matter of immersion. We have external evidence that the Lord's church practiced this ordinance from the early part of His earthly ministry. The commission came with a promise of an empowerment (Acts 1:8) on the day of Pentecost. The preaching of the word on that day resulted in 3k souls being saved & then "ADDED UNTO" the Lord's church by means of baptism (Acts 2:41).

Christians have is to study the
Scriptures for themselves.
IF WE STUDY AND LEARN THE TRUTH … THEN THE LIES WILL STICK OUT LIKE A ‘SORE THUMB” … IF YOU ARE A BORN-AGAIN BELIEVER IN CHRIST INDWELLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HAVE DISCERNMENT! … I Corinthians 2:14
This is true of any subject in life! Any subject! The Bible is a benchmark for the TRUTH! Any TRUTH! If you study and learn the truth about the Historical Baptist Distinctives you will readily see the falsehoods that (most) of all the (other) ‘religions and cults’ that are not based on Baptistic Theology and Distinctives have. If you use modern versions and not the King James Bible and listen to false teachers (Jude 3) you will become very confused!

“Three Major Problems In The Church” by Guy Goodell
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ” Matthew 22:29 KJV
The church claiming preference as the “Body of Christ” is in trouble. I speak not of the cults or the traditional systems bearing the name of Christian. It is what we have called fundamentalism for all these years. On vacation, I visited a church with my family. What I got there I could have secured in a tavern or a worldly concert!
The threefold problems include:
First, Christians do not read the Bible. They do have one. They often carry one. Ask them a basic Bible doctrinal question and see what you get.
Second, Christians who read the Bible ignore what the Bible says.
For instance, “I know the Bible is against my living with him out of marriage, but I need some financial support, or I’m going under.” I heard this from a young woman who was a pastor’s daughter!
Third, Christians who ignore the Bible don’t see that as a problem. One man told me this, “I’m not a bad person. I just don’t see the big point about being upset over bi-sexual issues.” He was the son of a well-known pastor. By the way, the Bible term here is sodomy.
Jesus said, “… Ye do err; not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” To know refers to being able to see a fact and perceiving how it relates to life. Factual knowledge without understanding the power of God leads to misdirected living. The Lord also said, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee,…” (Rev. 2:4a). — G.G.
Prepared by Roger Fulk, from the “Baptist Bread” , August 17, 2017 by author Dr. Guy Goodell, Pastor, Bible Baptist Church, Hudson Falls, NY. With permission from Tim Green, editor Baptist Bread.
(MY OPINION) This is What causes all the confusion? Modern Bible Versions and Lack of Baptist History TRUTH and lack of proper methods of Biblical Interpretation!
THE ROOT CAUSE IS … a SPIRITUAL, a HEART AND an IGNORANCE PROBLEM … that … causes all the other things that were mentioned which are the symptoms!
In a nutshell …
“Major Causes of Problems in the Church”.

What causes all the confusion? Modern Bible Versions and Lack of Baptist History TRUTH and lack of proper Literal Bible Interpretation! This is the root cause of all the other things that were mentioned.
Solution:
We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, PROPER Biblical Interpretation, including prophecy and True Baptist Church History and Distinctives.
The Ten C’s ….. there may be more ….. Now there are Ten!
(1) ... Greatest Commandments Matthew 22:36-40
(2) ... Great Commission Matthew 28:16-20
(3) ... Earnestly Contend for the faith Jude 3-4, 20-25
(4) ... All the Counsel of God Acts 20:26-27
(5) ... One Christ Ephesians 4:4-6
(6) ... Another Christ 2 Corinthians 11:4
(7) ... With Compassion, Christians are to have compassion (1 Pe. 3:8; 1 Jn. 3:17; Jude 22). [See Charity, Labor, Love, Mercy.]
(8) ... Pray without ceasing I Thessalonians 5:17
(9) ... Creation Genesis 1:1-2, John 1:1-5 The seven c’s of creation!
(10) ...His Commandments in Old & New Testaments Revelation 22:14C

Roger Fulk Admin added the Description April 20, 2021
This is one of the groups that this new group is patterned after. Consider this post as a description to pattern this group after learning biblical truth and what is 'not' biblical truth. If you learn the truth then you will recognize what is not true! As a Born Again Believer, with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT, you will have discernment! LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN!
·
The purpose of this group is to be a teaching group and learning group about LEARNING BIBLICAL TRUTH - GOD'S TRUTH! And, exposing all false teachings, both, within Christianity and outside the realms of Christianity. Brothers & Sisters this is not a debate group.
There are many groups where you can go to debate. Please keep posts to the subject of this group which is A Warning Ministry. If your post is not about A Warming Ministry we will remove it.
The standards we use in this group ...
We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, proper Biblical Interpretation, including prophecy and Baptist History, Baptist Theology, Baptist Escatology, and Baptist Historical Distinctives.
Roger Fulk ....What do I do? . I am spending several hours a day studying Baptistic Theology, Christian Apologetics and current and historical events as they apply to Biblical principles. I am developing, what some people call, a “Warning Ministry”. Looking back, I have been doing that all my life. Researching, teaching and discerning the truth. This has always been my calling.
I research the research and the Bible. Many of my sources are written by people who have dedicated and spent much of their entire lives writing and researching various subjects. In some cases writing books and preaching sermons that would be difficult for anyone to duplicate and certainly not in my lifetime. My passion is teaching and passing on resources and information to people to help others.
These comments and rules are adapted from a group named "Wolf Watch Ministry False Teaching Exposed Based on the Authorized KJB" and is one of several other warning ministries that contribute information and research to this group!
My purpose in maintaining this ministry is to biblically present the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, to teach what the Bible says about the many controversial issues today, to refute false teaching and teachers to include the false churches and the cults and to help biblically train and disciple those that want to learn God's word.

Wolf Watch Ministry False Teaching Exposed
Folks, especially new members, we ask you to limit your posts to Wolf Watch Ministry: False Teachings Exposed subjects as outlined below! This is the scope of this group - Every day we get posts that are off-topic or from unreliable or unvetted sources or contain modern bible versions or other than Authorized 1611 King James Version or commentary that is not vetted! It is not that other things are necessarily bad just out of the scope of the group. Posts about things that are not within the Description, Standards, and rules of this group will not be approved and deleted at the discretion of the Admins.
Description: The purpose of this group is to be a teaching group and learn about and expose all false teachings, both, within Christianity and outside the realms of Christianity. Brothers & Sisters this is not a debate group. There are many groups where you can go to debate. Please keep posts to the subject of this group which is A Warning Ministry. If your post is not about Wolf Watch Ministry: False Teachings Exposed, which is A Warming Ministry we will remove it.
Inside the realms of Christianity, we expose the false teachings of erroneous Historical Baptist Church History, attacks on Historic Baptist Ecclesiology, Unscriptural Non-Baptist Positions Concerning the Kingdom of God, The Bride of Christ, Baptist Baptism, Baptist History, Heritage, Distinctives, Theology and Doctrine, Women Ministers, The Feminist Movement, Soft Separatism, New Evangelicalism, Theological Liberalism, Materialism, Arminianism, Calvinism, also called The Mystical Invisible Universal 'Church', Limited Atonement, Lordship Salvation, Glossolalia Regeneration, Glossolalia Sanctification, Baptismal Regeneration, Continuationism, Pentecostalism, Charismaticism, Spirit Baptism, Non-Scriptural Teachings on End Times Theology, Sinless Perfectionism, the Prosperity Gospel, Nephilium, Serpent Seed, Easy Believism, Mother Grace, Ecumenicism, Infant Baptism, the Shepherding Movement, Unitarianism, Universalism and Modern Bible Versions, Attack on the King James Bible, and other beliefs that we discover that are not Biblical including … “Cultural Factors that are Weakening Churches” and “Ignorance About Important Issues”… which is … Another reason why a large percentage of fundamental Baptist churches will be well down the emerging path in 10-20 years is that there is widespread ignorance about important issues such as contemporary music, New Evangelicalism, the Southern Baptist Convention, Reformed theology, reconstructionism, charismaticism, Neo-orthodoxy, Darwinian evolution, intelligent design, and theistic evolution, contemplative mysticism, and the emerging church.
Outside the realm of Christianity, we expose the false teachings, including Anti-Israel/Anti-Jewish beliefs, of Roman Catholicism, WICCA, Satanism, Jehovah's Witness, Mormons, New Age, Scientology, Spiritualism, Native American Spiritism, The Way International, Christian Science, Eastern Mysticism, Kundalini, Yoga, The Unification Church, Islam, Seventh Day Adventism, The Nation of Islam, the Hebrew Roots / Messianic / Sacred Name Movement and any other groups that teach doctrine contrary to Orthodox Biblical Christian doctrine.
We do not allow any members to defend any False Teacher, teaching, or cult. Anyone who does so will be removed from this group. All posts that go off-topic will be removed.
The standards we use in this group ... We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, PROPER Biblical Interpretation METHODS, including prophecy and Baptist History, Heritage, Distinctives, Theology, and Doctrine.
We normally do not put up videos, music, sermons, and Scripture posts unless if they are on Baptist History, Doctrine, Distinctive or other subjects for this group scope. Again not that they are bad or we are against them it's just outside the scope of the group. Thanks for your understanding. UPDATED 04/13/21
