The Places of Worship Advisory Board (POWAB) consists of members of the regional faith community, partnering organizations, and departments of health in the Metropolitan Washington Region. POWAB exists to provide resources, advice, and supports efforts that result in improvements in whole person health for individuals, families, and communities. Our work focuses on the influence of faith institutions and faith-based organizations on the life and health of people who participate in faith-based services.

The Legacy of the Honorable John Robert Lewis
Representative John Robert Lewis (February 21,1940 – July 17, 2020) was an American politician and civil-rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020 from pancreatic cancer.

Former President Barack Obama said:

“I’ve come here today because I like so many Americans owe a great debt to John Lewis and his forceful vision of freedom."
Lewis was “a man of pure joy and unbreakable perseverance,”

Former President George W. Bush said:

“He always believed in preaching the Gospel in word and in deed, insisting that hate and fear had to be answered with love and hope,”
The Honorable John Robert Lewis died July 17 at the age of 80.

Virtual HIV Interfaith Conference
September 22-23-24, 2020

The virtual HIV Interfaith Conference, Resilience and Renewal, will provide a space for sharing, capacity building and advocacy among people of faith involved in HIV and AIDS.
It will be an opportunity to celebrate the many resilient people engaged in the HIV response; and an occasion to recommit faith leaders and communities to address HIV-related stigma and discrimination, increase access, and promote human rights.

They deliver bread, vegetable and house hold supplies two time per week to
Minister Chi Mauusco home.

She has such compassion for those who are in need that
Since the pandemic started 1,200 seniors and faith leaders have received donations.

This workshop is being provided in partnership with the Office of Martin Luther King III and will serve to educate and inform faith communities on their rights with regards to voting.
The Workshop will be delivered by Dr. Keith Jennings, President, African American Center for Global Politics and Human Rights and provide an overview of:

  • the process of voting in the U.S. and the election cycle;
  • challenges that have ensued from voting and the potential barriers for the upcoming 2020 election cycle; and 
  • opportunities and solutions for strengthening voter engagement and participation in the DMV.

We have a special welcome and introductory remarks
prior to the workshop.

Reimbursement up to $500
The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) Hearing Aid Assistance Program (DC HAAP) provides District residents with a reimbursement to offset the cost of purchasing a hearing aid. Residents that purchase/purchased a hearing aid between June 1, 2018 and September 1, 2020 can qualify to receive a reimbursement up to $500 per applicant depending on the out-of-pocket cost.
To be eligible for the reimbursement one must meet the following criteria:
  • A resident of the District of Columbia; 
  • 0 - 14 years of age;
  • 65 years of age or older; 
  • Have a disability;
  • Have an annual gross household income of less than $100,000.
