Pro-Life Congressman Steve Scalise has won the private House Republican vote and will become the GOP nominee for House Speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy. Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, is solidly pro-life and his nomination in the private Republican caucus vote helps the GOp avoid a lengthy floor battle so he can more quickly be approved as Speaker during a difficult time after the attack on Israel.
Republican selected House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to be their new Speaker on a 113-99 vote after first rejecting a motion to require 217 Republican votes for a candidate before the ballot goes to the House floor. That helps avoid a long process of vote after vote to finally get a majority.
Under GOP rules, the conference is now expected to support the winner on the House floor and Republicans control the chamber so Scalise is expected to defeat the Democrat nominee and become Speaker. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee and is also pro-life, came in second place in the vote
