Friendly City News April 2023

This edition was composed by Town Manager, Paula Webb and is the official newsletter for the Town of Swansboro, North Carolina.

New Spider Web Climber Installed

In March one of Municipal Parks infamous features returned. The Spider Web Climber was in need of repairs and was removed from the park in 2022. Staff explored other play features but ultimately decided to install a new climber. It was an easy decision; the park was known for having this climber as no other parks in the surrounding area have a feature like this.

A few SwanFest tips:

  • Bring a chair or blanket for seating
  • Our local sponsors and many downtown businesses will be open for drinks, snacks, and more

“Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape”

Develop a plan for how you and your family would escape your home in the event of a fire. Once you have that plan, practice your escape from every room with different exit situations. Routinely practice this with the entire family to remain current on your plan for an emergency. Finally, ensure you have a specified meeting place so that emergency responders can account for all your loved ones.

Living Shoreline Project Near Completion

NCDOT and NC Coastal Federation partnered on a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant to install the living shoreline along on NC Hwy 24/Causeway.

The Causeway experienced past erosion due to storm events (in 2005 and 2011), including erosional undercutting as a result of Hurricane Florence (2018). The abutment along the northwest end of the island and the abutment at the southeast end of the island are also showing continued signs of erosion exposed to the White Oak River.

NCDOT Project Manager Daniel Waugh, indicates that the major construction of the sills is on schedule to be completed this month. Sidewalk repairs will then be made and the temporary traffic pattern will be removed.
