Recreation Center Celebrates 10th Year

Swansboro celebrated its 10th year in the Recreation Center this month. The Recreation Center was made possible through the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and a generous donation of $100,000 from the Swansboro Area Development Foundation. To help celebrate the milestone, the department showcased some of his instructors and their programs on January 28. Free classes and demonstrations included: Jessica’s Dance Academy, POUND Fitness, Tennisbloc’s pickleball clinic, Hammocks Beach Park Ranger’s Show-n-Tell Station, Swansboro Soccer Association’s pickup games, music by Jeff Huntington, Food Vendors and Valentine’s arts and crafts for the kids.

Program Supervisor Robby Fellows shared that his desire is “to help everyone live a better and healthier life through recreation! Our facility provides an indoor and outdoor setting that supports people of all ages and abilities.” When asked, what about the next 10 years, Parks and Recreation Director Anna Stanley indicated that “…the department’s vision is to grow in importance by offering new and exciting programs. To find out what people want, surveys are given to attendees of the larger events such as the Mullet Festival. We find trends so we can tweak our programs to keep things from getting stale. Swansboro has seen a tremendous amount of growth in the last 10 years, from older retirees to the younger military families. They move here from around the country, so we are a melting pot.”
