A Message from the Board of Directors & CEO
|
|
A warm hello to all family and friends of our residents at Veterans Memorial Lodge, the Nigel Program, Beckley Farm Lodge and Rest Haven Lodge.
As mentioned in our last newsletter, Broadmead Care has recently launched our new brand and logo (shown above). As an important part of the Broadmead Care family, we wanted to you to know about this important change in our organization and what it means to our programs and services.
Most importantly, this new brand reflects a commitment from all of us at Broadmead Care to our Purpose: “
To build communities where every person can experience wellbeing and happiness
.” While good clinical and personal care is essential for each resident, our most important work is to help residents to live with meaning and purpose, to live as fully as they can, to feel like they belong, and to feel loved.
With the fall season upon us, we are once again approaching a very important time of year at our Veterans Memorial Lodge care home – Veterans Week. While it is truly a privilege for Broadmead Care to serve all of our residents and clients at all of our care homes, we also acknowledge the unique privilege we have at Veterans Memorial Lodge and the Veterans Health Centre to provide care and services for Canada’s Veterans. We care for Veterans who have served in World War II, the Korean War, and in many peacekeeping missions and other theatres of war since 1956.
As Remembrance Day approaches, we celebrate the Veterans who fought for our freedoms, and we celebrate all the seniors in our care who, each in their own unique way, helped to build the wonderful country we call Canada.
And we thank all of you, our extended Broadmead Care family, who year after year generously support the programs and services we provide. As we approach the Christmas giving season, we invite you to remember how important your contributions are to enriching the care we provide for your loved ones at each of our care homes.
Heather Parry, Board Chair & David Cheperdak, CEO

Today's Canadian Armed Forces continue to protect the freedom we enjoy, as did hundreds of thousands of brave Canadians in uniform since the First World War. Every November, from the 5th to the 11th, we remember their service and sacrifice.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign
Canada’s participation in the Italian Campaign took place over a 20-month period during the Second World War. More than 93,000 Canadians played an important role during this bitter struggle, battling some of the German Army’s best troops. The Italian Campaign began on the island of Sicily in July, 1943, and moved north up the Italian mainland through to the end of the war in Europe in May 1945. Nearly 6,000 Canadians would die there.

Veterans Memorial Lodge
Veterans Week started on Tuesday, November 5 with a formal Proclamation in the Oak Room, followed by entertaining by the Wee Big Band.
The culmination of Veterans Week will be the Remembrance Day Services happening simultaneously in the Veterans’ Chapel in the Oak Room and in the Creative Arts Studio (formerly the Maple Room) on Monday, November 11, starting at 10:30am.
All are welcome to attend the service but we ask that if possible, only one family member sit in the Oak Room, as the Oak Room has limited capacity and this will provide more room for Veterans to attend.
There will be a less formal Service in the Creative Arts Studio on the B level. As well, National and Provincial Remembrance Day services may be seen on televisions in the individual lodge sitting rooms or in resident rooms, for those who are interested in a quieter option.
The Remembrance Day service is very popular and we expect many visitors and guests. Parking can be challenging. If you can, please consider carpooling, taking the bus, or using a taxi. For November 11 only, between the hours of 9am and noon you may park in the lots of TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank, and Broadmead Village Shopping Centre. TD Canada Trust asks that the spaces nearest their entrance be left for clients accessing their automated banking services. The Shopping Centre requests that you park in the lot between Canadian Tire and Starbucks. Please ensure you give yourself ample time to arrive in time for the service.

Broadmead Care Pet Therapy Volunteers
|
|
Meet Sturgis, one of Broadmead Care's volunteers. Sturgis and his human are members of
P.A.T.S
, Pacific Animal Therapy Society, a therapy program that has been serving Victoria for more than 25 years. Broadmead Care is fortunate to have a number of volunteers from both P.A.T.S and
St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program
that provide pet visits and services to Broadmead Care homes.
Animal-assisted therapy has been proven to have a number of positive physical, emotional, and social benefits. Visits with dogs have been shown to lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart rates; reduce depression symptoms, anxiety, loneliness, and boredom; and stimulate short- and long-term memories.
Earlier this summer
Kirsten Young
, a professional photographer in Victoria BC, volunteered her services to take photos to help highlight the work being done by Broadmead Care's pet therapy volunteers. Thank you to Kirsten and all of our pet therapy volunteers (both four legged and human)!

Congratulations Strides for Broadmead Team!
2019 GoodLife Marathon
|
|
The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon has reached the $2 million mark in charity fundraising. Twenty-one charities participated in the CHEK Charity Pledge Program this year raising $95,804 – enough to tip the total raised over 15 years to $2 million.
The charities raise awareness and funds by encouraging individuals to run or walk for their individual causes, and by collecting pledges.
The top charity was Broadmead Care Society, raising $22,523. Broadmead also produced the top fundraiser – Jennifer Jasechko -- who raised $9,383. Second was John McGoff who ran for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC and Yukon. His total was $7,423. Third was Mandy Parker from Broadmead Care Society with $3,200.
“For Broadmead Care, this was our first time out of the gate, and what a run! The support each Strides for Broadmead team member received from family, friends, and their own personal fundraising initiatives was inspiring,” said Shannon Donnelly, Fund Development Coordinator for Broadmead Care. “The CHEK Charity Pledge program has been a wonderful opportunity to bring together people from all sides of our Broadmead Care family and work together with a shared purpose, to build communities where people of all ages and abilities can experience wellbeing and happiness.”
“Every year I am excited about working with the diverse group of charities that come on board to partner with the marathon,” said Cathy Noel, General Manager of the Victoria Marathon Society. “Each organization has the passion, energy, and goals of what they want to achieve, and through the CHEK Charity Pledge Program we work with each group to help them get that much closer to reaching those goals. We are very proud of the $2 million dollar total that we have been able to raise through the marathon partnerships. Now on to $3 million.”
We have already signed up to participate in the 2020 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. As part of the Broadmead Care family you are invited to join our efforts either as a donor, a participant, or both! Come out to run, jog, walk, or wheel!
