News from the Clubhouse

We're sad to announce that our executive director, Judy Cara, will retire on December 31, 2024. Judy has been our executive director since the chapter’s launch in October 2021.  Judy is now ready to hand over leadership of the chapter to a new executive director who will continue the impact of Friends of the Children – Colorado Springs on the lives of the children and families we serve.

Under her impactful leadership and mentorship, the chapter has grown to nine employees with almost 50 children enrolled in the program. Judy’s dedication has resulted in a thriving nonprofit organization that’s having a profound impact on children and their families in our community. Among Judy’s many accomplishments are creating a clubhouse and office space in D11’s Jack Swigert Middle School, securing $3M over three years to support the chapter’s growth and raising funding to build a playground for the children in the program, the Swigert students and children in the surrounding community. We wish Judy a well-deserved and happy retirement with her husband, Jim, who already has some travel plans in the works!

Mentorship Matters

Learning New Skills

Landon is working on fine motor skills while building a self-propelled car. His Friend, David, was proud of him as this took a lot of attention to detail, patience, and learning to slow down to follow instructions.

These opportunities are part of what makes having a Friend so valuable in the children's lives.

The Daily Journey

Mentoring children involves influencing how they think about everyday things. One Friend, Tawnee, does this effortlessly by talking about healthy food choices.

In a casual conversation, Tawnee was able to get Everly thinking about positive food choices she has and also new healthy foods she might want to try.
