Dear Debbie:

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the impact of abuse and neglect on children in our community. While some may think of neglect as less serious than other forms of abuse, the truth is that neglect can have devastating and even irreversible consequences. In cases of medical neglect, for example, children can suffer lifelong harm—or tragically lose their lives.

During the month of April and throughout every month, we work tirelessly to advocate for the best interests of Denton County children affected by abuse and neglect. But we couldn’t do it without the support of our generous donors and dedicated volunteers.

This month, I encourage you to take action to stand up for children in our community who have been affected by abuse and neglect. That might mean stepping up in a big way by becoming a CASA volunteer, donating to CASA, or offering words of encouragement to a foster parent or child advocate.

Every effort, big or small, brings us closer to a world where each child has a safe, loving home. Thank you for joining us in this mission to stand up for the children who are looking to CASA for hope.

Sincerely,

Debbie Jensen

Executive Director, CASA of Denton County

Teamwork in Advocacy: Kathy and Sherry's CASA Journey

Currently, CASA volunteer advocates, Kathy Ogburn and Sherry Garvin, are tackling a complex case involving several children across multiple placements. Without their partnership, they both agree that this particular case might be very challenging for new volunteers. “We each bring different strengths,” Kathy said. “Sherry’s mind is so organized, and she knows how to work with the school system like a pro.” In turn, Sherry sees Kathy as the nurturing presence every child needs, someone who brings warmth and care into even the most clinical situations.

The Belonging Need

presented by Irwin Steel

On Tuesday, April 1, we hosted The Belonging Need—a powerful workshop exploring how a sense of belonging can help bridge the gap for children in the child welfare system. Together, we gained a fresh perspective and renewed intention for even more meaningful, impactful work. When we foster true belonging, we cultivate resilience and healthier outcomes for both ourselves and those we serve.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Irwin Steel, whose generous support made this event possible. We’re deeply grateful for their commitment to building stronger communities.
