Welcome to our first edition of this new way of keeping you updated on the very positive happenings at MVUSD. We're excited about bringing you some news each month that you might not otherwise hear about.
Whether you're an employee or a parent, chances are you know most about what goes on at your particular school or work site, and maybe not so much about what's happening elsewhere. Here's your chance to find out!
In each monthly edition, you'll learn more about our outstanding students, our dedicated staff, and innovative programs, which all come together to make MVUSD unique and increasingly high-achieving.

 Canyon Springs girls bring home state basketball championship!
In the end, it wasn't even close. In fact, from the beginning it wasn't close! The Cougars of Canyon Springs were just too much for their Pleasant Grove opponents in the state girls Division I basketball final at Sacramento. Final score: 56-30. They made it look easy with decisive wins through the playoffs. But don't underestimate what went into making this a state-championship season.  Valley View Academic Decathlon team turns heads at county competition
The Valley View Academic Decathlon team has a few other high-performing teams in Riverside County suddenly looking over their shoulders and wondering, "Who are those guys?" The answer: They are among the top high school minds in the county and are fast closing in on the Academic Decathlon's perennial leaders. At the recent competition, Valley View finished 8th out of 18 teams overall, and 7th in the grueling Super Quiz culminating event. In the process, the team also collected gold and silver medals and top honors in several categories, and improved their overall team score from last year by a whopping 3,000 points -- especially impressive given that each of the seven tests is worth a maximum 1,000 points! Big congratulations go to team members Patrick Benito, Brooke Thomas, Carolina Jimenez, Hajer DaWoody, Winnifranz Banago, Daniel Ramirez, Daniel Dorr, Lydia Brcak and Kassandra Flores and coach Chris Gilliatt.  Landmark Middle School honored in Sacramento as a model for others
Staff from Landmark Middle School were proud to be on hand in Sacramento recently, invited there by the State Department of Education to receive their "School to Watch" award. Landmark was named this year by Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson as one of just 11 high-performing "Schools to Watch" schools in California -- and the only one in all of Riverside County! Landmark worked hard to earn this award. To become a School to Watch model middle school, applicants must have met or exceeded the Academic Performance Index (API) schoolwide growth target for three of the previous five years (2008-09 to 2012-13). School administrators have to conduct a self-study evaluation and complete an extensive narrative application. Each site is then reviewed by a team of middle grades experts. It was a good day for the Knights! |
 Taxpayers save $1.9 million thanks to MVUSD credit-rating upgrade
Leadership matters, and the strength of leadership of Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) was what convinced Standard & Poor's recently to upgrade the district's credit rating to A+ status, saving taxpayers $1.9 million. In order to take advantage of current lower interest rates, MVUSD officials traveled to San Francisco to make the case in person for a credit-rating upgrade in order to refinance a certificate of participation - essentially a mortgage loan the district carries. Although such credit-rating upgrades are rare on the first request, analysts at Standard & Poor's granted it to MVUSD in recognition of the district's prudent and efficient fiscal management practices and the stability and focus of district leadership, including the School Board, district administration and school principals, and improved student academic achievement. The result is a $1.9 million savings for taxpayers! |
 Bear Valley students "Take a Cop to Lunch"
Police officers are pretty nice people, and they make good lunch partners, too, as students at Bear Valley Elementary found out recently Three Moreno Valley officers joined the school's BEARS for a special meal, an annual event at the school called "Take a Cop to Lunch." The BEARS (Bright, Energetic, Aware, Responsible Students) are a student leadership group whose mission is simply to do whatever they can to make Moreno Valley a better, safer, nicer place to live and go to school. The third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders meet twice a month and focus on community service. The BEARS got to ask the officers all kinds of questions, and the officers got to know some very supportive and caring young members of the community. That's the simple power of sharing a meal. |

- Moreno Valley Online Academy is currently enrolling students for the 2014-15 school year. It's an option available to students from Kindergarten through 10th grade who live within MVUSD boundaries and who homeschool or want an alternative school setting.
- Armada and Butterfield elementary schools feature Dual-Language (English/Spanish) Immersion programs for K-1 students.

Vista del Lago Dance Team shines at national competition
It's been quite a season for the Vista del Lago Dance Team. They capped an outstanding year with a strong finish at the Vegas Nationals. The team took 1st and 1st overall in the Hip Hop category; 1st and 1st overall in Lyrical; 2nd in Character; and Jazz runner-up; with one member claiming runner-up in Solo. And to cap it off, Vista del Lago was named Most Spirited School. And not only are they an outstanding dance team, but each member is also an academic high achiever, with GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 4.3. Congratulations to the team and coach Karina Vitelli.

 Cloverdale Elementary students talk careers
Is it ever too early to start thinking about what you want to do for a living? Not at Cloverdale Elementary, anyway, where for College and Career Day students were treated to visits from an author, a pastry chef, student-teachers and more. They talked with students about the paths they took to their professions, and although their jobs are diverse, the general message is the same: There's really no mystery to finding your life's work; just follow your interests, get the right education, and be open to other interesting, unexpected possibilities along the way. Here, kindergartners were asked by two student-teachers to tell what careers interest them. Based on their answers, this classroom alone has future lawyers, doctors, teachers, and maybe an astronaut or two. And it's all so completely possible. Now that's exciting!

2nd Round of Math League competition gets underway at Mountain View Middle School
Even though there were parents, grandparents and siblings in the audience, and 20 teams of three mathematics students going head to head, the room was so quiet you'd hardly know there was a competition taking place. But don't mistake quiet for lack of intensity. These Mountain View Middle School students, armed with pencils, some scratch paper, and a Smart Board clicker, were vying for one of three top spots in the second round of Moreno Valley Math League, a collaborative competition involving teams of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at all six middle schools. At stake was the chance to advance to the third round and be one of the top nine mathematics competitors from their school. To succeed at Math League, students have to pool their knowledge and strengths and work together -- a lesson that applies to just about any successful endeavor in life. Second-round competition finishes up this month. |
 MVUSD employees, School Board celebrate a year without teacher layoffs
After seven years of annual budget cutting due to reduced state funding, Moreno Valley Unified employees and School Board are celebrating the fact that no permanent certificated (teaching) employee is expected to lose work this year. March 15 is the deadline each year for school districts to notify certificated employees of potential layoffs, but this year's deadline passed with little notice. "We so value the work our teachers do each day," said School Board President Tracey Vackar. "It's a welcome relief to be able to keep the momentum of excellence we're building by keeping everyone on the job and focused on teaching and learning." |
 VVHS artists claim lion's share of ribbons at National Date Festival & Riverside Co. Fair
Valley View High School's student artists had their hands full of ribbons when they left the National Date Festival & Riverside County Fair in Indio recently. In fact, they claimed the most ribbons of all -- 18 first-place awards and two second-place awards -- for their work in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media classes, including sculpture, ceramics, chalk pastel, mixed media, and both black-and-white and color drawings. "Our students look forward to showcasing their work in the community," said Michael Bernbaum, chair of the school's Visual Arts department. "The Date Festival offers them the unique opportunity to have more than 100,000 people see their work."  Strategic Plan/LCAP process involves community like never before
OK, so the photo is boring, but the work these community members and educators are doing is downright exciting. They are busy creating a new Strategic Plan for the district, which will be aligned to the developing Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is required by the state under the new Local Control Funding Formula, which gives school districts much greater flexibility for using funds, but requires better accountability and a lot of community involvement. Taking part in the process, which began last fall, are students, parents, business owners, college representatives, other community stakeholders, teachers, classified staff, and district administrators. And they all share a passion for student academic achievement, and innovation and creativity when it comes to improving it. The new plans will be finalized later this spring. |

UC recruiters address hundreds of eager students and parents at Vista del Lago
 The college application process can be both nerve-wracking and confusing. Just ask any high school seniors and their parents who at this time of year are waiting to hear where they're being accepted for the fall. So representatives of the University of California system recently talked to a huge crowd of parents and students at Vista del Lago High School to try to prepare future applicants to be more competitive candidates. "We're looking for leaders," said one recruiter talking about how to write a personal statement. There was also very helpful information about how to start at a California Community College with the intention of transferring to the UC system. But one of the most interesting parts of the whole evening was when the UCLA recruiter asked how many middle-schoolers were in attendance, and hands shot up all over the packed house. MVUSD is clearly creating a college-bound culture! |
 March Students of the Month
Not many school districts work so closely with each other and their Chamber of Commerce to recognize outstanding student achievement as do MVUSD and Val Verde Unified. Each month, the districts come together at the MVUSD Community Education Center for a luncheon, sponsored by the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce, in honor of outstanding high school seniors. MVUSD's Students of the Month for March are Breanna McFarland, Canyon Springs; Daniel Sanchez, Bayside; Bertin Gonzalez, March Mountain; Eunice Shin, Moreno Valley; Jolena Carrion, Valley View; and Rosa Maria Mora-Villa, Vista del Lago.  MVUSD historians shine at Riverside County competition
History scholars from Vista Heights Middle School and North Ridge Elementary claimed an impressive nine medals at the recent Riverside County History Day competition. The winners now advance to the state competition, which will be held in - of all places - Riverside, April 24-27! The strong showing by Moreno Valley students at the county competition was noticed by the capacity crowd. In fact, one category was swept entirely by Vista Heights students! A big round of applause is in order for these young scholars: Junior Group Exhibit, 1st Place: Naomi Marr-Alhamd and Katelyn Sanchez, VHMS; 2nd Place: Dulce Arce, Jacqueline Cervantes and Laura Gonzalez, VHMS; Junior Individual Exhibit, 1st Place: Maddison Zipper, VHMS; 2nd Place: Samuel Hornaday, VHMS; Junior Paper, 3rd Place: Emma Logan, VHMS; 4th and 5th Grade Group 2-D Display, 1st Place: Herbert Mejia and Skylar Ramon, North Ridge Elementary; and Junior Individual Performance, 1st Place: Kaylin Ng, VHMS; 2nd Place: Skyy Blue, VHMS; and 3rd Place: Cynthia Lopez, VHMS. |
 Standout seniors win Chavez Scholarships
Coinciding with Cesar Chavez Day, Moreno Valley College hosted its inaugural Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship Breakfast, to recognize local seniors, including MVHS's Thien Pham and Vista del Lago's Daniel Lorenzo. In keeping with Chavez's well-known advocacy for community service, the two outstanding seniors intend to come back to the community after college. Pham, who just two years ago didn't speak English, wants to become a high school teacher and help others the way his teachers have helped him. Lorenzo wants to become a police officer and help keep his community safe. |
 New Common Core testing given a "field test"
You've heard the name Common Core, but chances are you're not quite sure what it is. OK, here's an oversimplified explanation. Common Core State Standards testing is replacing STAR testing. STAR tests were given on paper to students in grades 2 - 11; Common Core tests in English and math will be given online to students in grades 3 - 8 and 11. (The CAHSEE, required for graduation, is still given to 10th graders.) The old state academic standards have been described as "a mile wide and an inch deep," requiring students to learn too little about too many things. Common Core focuses teaching on fewer standards, allowing for deeper understanding of important concepts and more real-world relevance. See? It's not so mysterious. This year's tests, which are being taken online this month, are a trial run. Next year, the results become part of the official record for California students, schools, and school districts. |
 KVCR 91.9: "Superintendent brings success to Moreno Valley schools"
"A few years ago, the Moreno Valley schools were in trouble. However, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Judy White, the Moreno Valley Unified School District has dramatically turned around, and now has received applause from state education officials, the state teachers' union, local businesses, and parents of kids who attend Moreno Valley schools. KVCR's Ken Vincent has a conversation with Superintendent White about how she and the community have pulled together the elements of success in the Moreno Valley School District."

 Poll shows strong support for potential school construction bond measure
According to a poll of 400 registered voters, there's strong community support for a potential new school bond measure. The MVUSD School Board commissioned the telephone poll to gauge support for a possible bond measure that could be placed on the November 2014 ballot. The district's Facilities Master Plan, completed in 2013, identified more than $600 million in needed school repairs, upgrades, and modernizations. The School Board will decide in the coming months whether the time is right to move forward with a new bond measure. There are so many great things happening at all 40 Moreno Valley schools each day that it's impossible to include it all here. But I hope you'll continue to read our representative sample of good news each month, and that you'll want to pass it along to others by clicking the little "Forward this email" link below. And we'll do our best to feature news from all the schools over time.
Our goal is simple: to help readers, when they're asked about Moreno Valley schools, to move from, "I don't know" to being able to eagerly reply, "Did you know...?"

�Las Chicas de Canyon Springs Traen el T�tulo Estatal de Baloncesto!

El Equipo de Decatl�n Acad�mico de Valley View Captur� la Atenci�n en el Concurso del Condado
El Equipo de Decatl�n Acad�mico de Valley View tiene algunos otros equipos de alto rendimiento en el Condado de Riverside de repente est�n mirando por encima de sus hombros (vigilando) y pregunt�ndose a s� mismos �"Qui�nes son esos chicos?" La respuesta: Ellos son considerados como las mejores mentes de secundaria en el condado y r�pidamente se est�n convirtiendo en los l�deres perennes del decatl�n acad�mico. En el reciente concurso, Valley View quedo en el 8vo puesto de un total de 18 equipos, y 7mo en la extenuante S�per Prueba de este evento culminante. La Escuela Intermedia Landmark Recibi� el Honor en Sacramento como un Modelo para Otros
El personal de la Escuela Intermedia Landmark tuvo el orgullo de ser reconocido recientemente en Sacramento por el Departamento de Educaci�n del Estado para recibir su premio como "Escuela Modelo". �Landmark fue nombrada este a�o por el Superintendente de Instrucci�n P�blica Tom Torlakson como una de 11 escuelas de alto rendimiento "Escuelas Modelo" en California, y la �nica en el Condado de Riverside! Los miembros del personal de Landmark trabajaron arduamente para ganar este premio. Para ser una escuela intermedia modelo, los estudiantes debieron haber logrado y superado el �ndice de Rendimiento Acad�mico (API) durante tres de los �ltimos cinco a�os (desde el 2008-09 hasta el 2012-13). Los Contribuyentes se Ahorran 1,9 Millones de D�lares Porque la Valoraci�n Crediticia de MVUSD ha Mejorado
El liderazgo del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Moreno Valley (MVUSD), fue lo que convenci� a Standard & Poor's, (la entidad que se encarga de ofrecer cr�dito) que incrementara la valoraci�n crediticia del distrito a A+ ahorrando a contribuyentes 1,9 millones de d�lares. Para aprovechar las tasas de intereses inferiores actuales, los funcionarios de MVUSD viajaron a San Francisco para abogar personalmente para una mejora de valoraci�n crediticia a fin de financiar de nuevo un certificado de participaci�n - esencialmente un pr�stamo hipotecario que tiene el distrito. Aunque tales mejoras de valoraci�n crediticia sean raras la primera vez, analistas en Standard & Poor's la concedieron a MVUSD en reconocimiento a pr�cticas fiscales prudentes y eficientes del distrito y la estabilidad y el enfoque del su liderazgo, incluyendo la Mesa Directiva, la administraci�n del distrito, los directores escolares y el rendimiento acad�mico de los estudiantes; �Como resultado, un ahorro de 1,9 millones de d�lares para contribuyentes! |
Los Estudiantes de Bear Valley "Invitan a un Polic�a a Almorzar"
Recientemente, los estudiantes de Escuela Primaria Bear Valley se percataron que los oficiales de polic�a son agradables y cordiales durante un almuerzo al cual fueron invitados. Tres oficiales de polic�a de Moreno Valley fueron invitados a un evento anual titulado "Take a Cop to Lunch" (Invita a Almorzar a un Polic�a) que la escuela celebra anualmente. Los BEARS (Bright, Energetic, Aware, Responsible Students)" (Estudiantes Responsables, Sobresalientes, Energ�ticos, Conscientes), son un grupo de liderazgo cuya misi�n es simplemente hacer que Moreno Valley sea un lugar seguro y agradable para vivir e ir a la escuela. Los estudiantes de tercer, cuarto, y quinto grado se re�nen dos veces al mes y se enfocan en el servicio a la comunidad. Los BEARS les hicieron toda clase de preguntas a los oficiales y ellos conocieron a un grupo de j�venes que se interesan por su comunidad. Este es el poder de compartir una comida.

Quiz�s Usted no se ha Percatado de dos Grandes Programas que Ofrecemos
- La Academia a trav�s del Internet de Moreno Valley actualmente est� matriculando a estudiantes para el a�o escolar 2014-2015. Esta es una opci�n disponible a estudiantes desde el kindergarten hasta el 10mo grado que viven dentro de las zonas de asistencia de MVUSD que son instruidos en sus hogares "homeschool" o desean un ambiente escolar alternativo.
- Las escuelas primarias Armada y Butterfield ofrecen el programa de Inmersi�n Dual (ingles/espa�ol) para estudiantes de K-1.

 El Equipo de Danza de Vista del Lago Sobresale en la Competencia Nacional
La temporada para el Equipo de Danza de Vista del Lago ha sido espectacular. Ellos tuvieron un a�o excepcional y sobresalieron en las Nacionales de Vegas. En la categor�a "Hip Hop" asumieron el 1er lugar; 1er lugar en Lyrical, 2do en Car�cter, y subcampe�n de Jazz, con un miembro reclamando subcampe�n de Solo. Y para colmo, Vista del Lago fue nombrada la Escuela de M�ximo Entusiasmo. No s�lo son un equipo de danza, pero cada miembro es de alto logro con promedios "GPA" que var�an de 3.0 a 4.3. Felicitaciones al equipo y entrenadora, Karina Vitelli.

Estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Cloverdale Hablan de Carreras Profesionales
�Es alguna vez demasiado pronto para empezar a pensar en qu� quiere hacer en la vida? En la Escuela Cloverdale, no! De todos modos, donde los estudiantes disfrutaron la visita de un autor, un chef de reposter�a, maestros practicantes y m�s por el D�a de Orientaci�n Universitaria y Carreras Vocacionales. Ellos hablaron con los estudiantes acerca de los caminos que los llevaron a sus profesiones, y aunque sus trabajos sean diversos, el mensaje general es el mismo: No hay realmente ning�n misterio para encontrar el trabajo de toda la vida; solo tienen que seguir sus intereses, obtener la educaci�n correcta y mantenerse abierto a otra posibilidades inesperadas e interesantes que puedan encontrar en el camino. Aqu�, dos maestros practicantes preguntaron a estudiantes de kindergarten que carreras les interesa. Bas�ndose en sus respuestas, en estos salones de clase hay futuros abogados, doctores, maestros y tal vez un astronauta o dos. Y todo eso es completamente posible. �Eso es emocionante!

Segunda Ronda del Concurso de Matem�ticas se pone en la Escuela Intermedia Mountain View
Aunque hab�a padres, abuelos y hermanos en la audiencia, y 20 equipos de tres estudiantes de matem�ticas se enfrentaron, en el sal�n hab�a un silencio incre�ble que apenas pod�as imaginar que se estaba llevando a cabo una competencia. Pero no confunda silencio por falta de intensidad. Estos estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia Mountain View, armados con l�pices, papel borrador y un control remoto para la Pizarra Digital Interactiva, estaban compitiendo por uno de los tres primeros lugares en la segunda ronda de la Liga de Matem�ticas de Moreno Valley, una competencia colaborativa que involucra a equipos de estudiantes de sexto, s�ptimo y octavo grado de las seis escuelas intermedias. Estaba en juego la posibilidad de avanzar a la tercera ronda y ser uno de los nueve mejores competidores de matem�ticas de su escuela. Los Empleados de MVUSD y la Mesa Directiva Celebran un a�o sin Despedir a Maestros
Despu�s de siete a�os de recortes anuales en el presupuesto debido a financiamiento estatal reducido, los empleados y la Mesa Directiva de Moreno Valley celebran que ning�n empleado certificado permanente (maestro) perder� su empleo este a�o. El 15 de marzo es el plazo anual para que los distritos escolares notifiquen a empleados sobre posibles despidos, pero la fecha este a�o transcurri� sin habernos dado cuenta. "Valoramos el trabajo que los maestros desempe�an cada d�a", dijo la Presidenta de la Mesa Directiva, Tracey Vackar. "Quisi�ramos continuar la misma meta de excelencia creada y mantener a todos en su trabajo y enfocados en ense�anza y aprendizaje."

Los Artistas de VVHS Ganaron en el Festival Nacional de D�tiles y en la Feria del Condado de Riverside
Los estudiantes artistas de la Escuela Secundaria Valley View tuvieron sus manos ocupadas con premios al culminar el Festival Nacional de D�tiles y la Feria del Condado de Riverside en Indio recientemente. De hecho, ellos ganaron la cantidad m�xima de premios - 18 premios de primer lugar y dos de segundo lugar - por su trabajo en una variedad de clases de medios de comunicaci�n de dos y tres dimensiones, incluyendo escultura, cer�mica, tiza en pastel, medios de comunicaci�n mixtos, y dibujos a color y en blanco y negro. "Nuestros estudiantes anticipan exhibir su trabajo en la comunidad", dijo Michael Bernbaum, el encargado del departamento de Artes Visuales de la escuela. El festival les ofrece una oportunidad �nica de hacer que 100.000 personas observen su trabajo". Nunca Antes la Comunidad se Hab�a Unido para Participar en el Proceso del Plan Estrat�gico/LCAP
Admitamos que la fotograf�a es aburrida, pero el trabajo que han producido estos miembros de la comunidad y educadores es emocionante. Ellos est�n ocupados creando un nuevo Plan Estrat�gico para el distrito el cual ser� alineado al Plan de Control Local de Rendici�n de Cuentas (LCAP). El LCAP es requerido por el estado en la nueva F�rmula de Financiamiento de Control Local que da a distritos escolares mayor flexibilidad para usar fundos, pero requiere mayor responsabilidad y mucha participaci�n de la comunidad. Participando en el proceso, que comenz� el oto�o pasado, incluyen estudiantes, padres, due�os comerciales, representantes de colegio/universidad, otros miembros de la comunidad, maestros, personal clasificado, y administradores del distrito. Todos comparten una pasi�n para el rendimiento acad�mico del estudiante, e innovaci�n y creatividad cuando resulta en su mejoramiento. Los nuevos proyectos se finalizar�n antes de terminar la primavera.

Reclutadores UC se Dirigen a Estudiantes y Padres Ansiosos en Vista del Lago
El proceso de aplicaci�n para asistir al colegio/universidad puede ser un rompe cabezas y confuso. H�gales la pregunta a estudiantes en el doceavo grado y sus padres quienes esperan las cartas para ser admitidos en el oto�o pr�ximo. Recientemente, representantes de universidades del sistema de California UC se dirigieron a una muchedumbre enorme de padres y estudiantes en la Escuela Secundaria Vista del Lago para preparar a estudiantes para ser m�s competitivos en el futuro. "Buscamos a l�deres", dijo un reclutador explicando c�mo escribir una declaraci�n personal. Hubo tambi�n informaci�n sobre c�mo empezar en el colegio comunitario de dos a�os con la intenci�n de transferirse al sistema UC. Pero una de las partes m�s interesantes de la tarde, fue cuando el reclutador de UCLA pregunt� cu�ntos estudiantes de la escuela intermedia est�n presentes, y una gran cantidad de ellos alzaron sus manos. �Es evidente que MVUSD est� creando una cultura de estudiantes destinados para asistir al colegio/universidad!

Los Estudiantes del Mes de Marzo
No hay muchos distritos escolares que trabajan en conjunto con sus C�maras de Comercio para reconocer el logro excepcional del estudiante como lo hacen MVUSD y Val Verde Unificado. Cada mes, los distritos se re�nen en el Centro Educativo de la Comunidad para un almuerzo patrocinado por la C�mara de Comercio en honor a estudiantes excepcionales en el doceavo grado. Los estudiantes de MVUSD del Mes para marzo son: Breanna McFarland, Canyon Springs; Daniel Sanchez, Bayside; Bertin Gonzalez, March Mountain; Eunice Shin, Moreno Valley; Jolena Carrion, Valley View; and Rosa Maria Mora-Villa, Vista del Lago. �Felicitaciones a todos los estudiantes excepcionales, y muchas gracias a la C�mara de Comercio de Moreno Valley!

Los Estudiantes de Historia de MVUSD Resaltan en la Competencia del Condado de Riverside County
Estudiantes destacados de historia de la Escuela Intermedia Vista Heights y Escuela Primaria North Ridge reclamaron impresionantemente nueve medallas en el concurso del D�a de la Historia del Condado de Riverside. �Los ganadores ahora avanzan al concurso estatal que se conducir� en Riverside del 24 al 27 de abril! Estudiantes Sobresalientes de Doceavo Grado Ganan Becas Chavez
Coincidiendo con el D�a de Cesar Chavez, el Colegio de la Comunidad de Moreno Valley patrocin� la beca para el Desayuno inaugural Cesar E. Chavez, para reconocer a estudiantes locales en el doceavo grado, incluyendo Thien Pham de MVHS y Daniel Lorenzo de Vista del Lago. Al reconocer el enfoque de Chavez en continuar estudiando, los dos estudiantes intentan regresar a la comunidad despu�s de graduarse del colegio/universidad. Pham, qui�n s�lo hace dos a�os no hablaba ingl�s, desea seguir una carrera como maestro de escuela secundaria y ayudar a otros de la manera como sus maestros le han ayudado. Lorenzo desea ser un oficial de polic�a y ayudar a mantener su comunidad segura. Ambos se han comprometido a la justicia social y servir a su comunidad como lo hizo el Sr. Chavez.

Administramos las Nuevas Pruebas de Est�ndares B�sicos Comunes "Common Core" como una Pr�ctica Preliminar
Usted quiz�s ha o�do el nombre "Common Core", pero es posible que no sebe que es. OKEY, aqu� est� una explicaci�n simplificada. Los Est�ndares Estatales B�sicos Comunes reemplazan las pruebas STAR. Las pruebas STAR fueron administradas en papel a estudiantes del 2do al 11vo grado; las pruebas de los Est�ndares B�sicos Comunes en ingl�s y matem�ticas se administrar�n en l�nea a estudiantes del 3er al 11vo grado. (El CAHSEE, requerido para la graduaci�n, todav�a se administra a estudiantes en el 10mo grado.) Los est�ndares acad�micos estatales anteriores han sido descritos como "una milla de ancho y una pulgada de profundidad", la cual requiri� que estudiantes aprendieran muy poco de muchas cosas. Los est�ndares b�sicos comunes enfocan es menos est�ndares permitiendo un entendimiento m�s a fondo de conceptos importantes y de m�s importancia mundial. No es tan misterioso. Las pruebas este a�o que est�n siendo tomadas a trav�s del Internet este mes, son una pr�ctica. El pr�ximo a�o, los resultados ser�n parte del registro oficial para estudiantes, escuelas, y distritos de California.

KVCR 91.9: "La Superintendente trae el �xito a las Escuelas de Moreno Valley"
"Hace algunos a�os, las escuelas en Moreno Valley estaban decayendo. Sin embargo, bajo el liderazgo de la Superintendente Judy D. White, el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Moreno Valley ha mejorado enormemente, y ahora ha recibido aplausos de funcionarios estatales de educaci�n, el sindicato de maestros, negocios locales, y padres de ni�os que asisten a escuelas de Moreno Valley. Hay tantas cosas extraordinarias que se est�n realizando en las 40 escuelas de Moreno Valley cada d�a que es imposible incluirlas todas en este noticiero. Pero espero que usted contin�e leyendo nuestra muestra representativa de noticias buenas cada mes, y que est� invitando a otros a leerla al oprimir la tecla en "Forward this email" a continuaci�n.
