My gosh ... we're halfway through summer already! I hope you have been enjoying yourselves with vacations, visits with family, Mid-State Fair, and the many other community events that keep us all busy.  I know our month-long vacation trip to Russia, Scandinavia and England flashed by, but we have some lovely memories.
Thank you to all who came out to the Tuesday In the Park BBQ on June 27th to support our Friends group. This is one small way that we can raise additional funds to support the Atascadero Library with programs and books.  It also allows us to provide some focus on our group in the community.
The Art in the Library is being changed on August 1st . We are pleased to welcome local artists, Laure Carlisle & Kate Moldauer.  The exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours. Our thanks go out to Mandy Weathers for sharing her artwork for the last two months.  What a wonderful bright display of paintings!
The Total Eclipse is coming! I'm sure by now you have all heard about this event. It makes US landfall in Oregon at around 10am on August 21 st.  In California we will see this as a partial eclipse, but no less exciting.  I wonder how many of us really understand what is happening? To find out Central Coast Astronomical Society President Joseph Carro will be on hand on Monday, August 21st at 10:30am to view and explain the eclipse.  Remember - you do need special viewing glasses to view the eclipse.  These will be available to attendees of the program.
We have an upcoming Book Sale in August - more info is found in the newsletter...this is another fund raising activity of our Friends group.  We try to keep our Bookstore open as often as possible throughout the week.  Hope to see you at the Book Sale, and in the Bookstore! We have great bargains.
Have you renewed your annual membership in Friends of the Atascadero Library (FOAL)?  Annual memberships run from July 1 st through July 30 th each year. Now is the time to renew, if you have not already done so.
Continue having a great summer. Look forward to seeing you at the Library.

Linda Zirk
President, Friends of the Atascadero Library

July marks the beginning of our new fiscal year which means it is time to renew FOAL memberships!  You may send your renewal to PO Box 561, Atascadero, CA. 93423 or you may bring it to the book store at the library or the library circulation desk.

You may also renew on-line by clicking the button below or at the FOAL website
Members who have Life status do not need to renew membership.

Membership dues enable FOAL to make substantial contributions to library programs and materials through out the year and the library depends on our support in its service to the community.  If you haven't been into the library for awhile, or time to look around, check out the "Did You Know?" feature below highlighting some of the wonderful resources  made available through the County of San Luis Obispo library system and your membership dollars!
If you have a question about your membership status, send your question to our email at linda.folatascadero@yahoo.com.

Did You Know the Library...

  • donates surplus books and magazines to other local non-profit organizations?
  • has current issue magazines 3 for $1.00?

Did you know that your  FOAL membership provides...
  • funding for more Wi-Fi hot spots

Sue and Pete Sly, a 2017 audience favorite, received the first ever standing ovation for a community star
dance team.
Jeannie Malik, Vice-President of the Friends group and DWOS Coordinator announced the following six organizations will be joining DWOS by providing a dancer, and fundraising on their dancer's behalf. Friends of the Atascadero Library Board approved non-profits and their community star dancers are:  Atascadero Education Foundation (Scott Rosenblum), Atascadero Historical Society (Jim Wilkins), Friends of Atascadero Lake (Karen Buris-Wykie), North County Dance Performing Arts Foundation (Vicki Silva), Quota International of Atascadero (Brenda May) and RISE (Marilyn Curry). Community Star Dancers Jeanne Neely and Jane Frenzel will represent Atascadero Friends of the Library to raise funds for ongoing technology needs and programs benefiting the community.
Each Community Star Dancer has been paired with a professional choreographer who will teach the star a dance routine and partner with them during the shows. We are thrilled to have Artistic Director Frank Sanchez on board for his 4th production with DWOS. Frank has chosen a Broadway theme with the title, "Dancing on Broadway".  Frank stated, "Our lives have been enriched by the musicals that have originated on the Broadway stage.  Musical theatre has entertained us with unforgettable stories told in story form set to songs and dances.  We will make an  effort to bring some of these recognizable musical moments to life."
Professional Choreographers for 2018 will be Christopher Ellwood, Kara Frenzel, Chris Harmon, Brian Reeves, Eddie Rodriguez, Christina Troxel, Tom Troxel and Koby Wescom. Christina Troxel will also continue her role as Assistant to the Director.  Several past community stars will be performing throughout the show in vignettes to round out the all star cast.
The participating non-profit organizations and community star dancers will begin fundraising August 10th following their orientation meeting August 9th, 6 pm at the Atascadero Library community room. Each vote will be $10 until Tuesday March 20 at 6 pm. After this time, votes will increase to $20 through the final show night. The community Star Dancer with the most votes will be awarded the coveted championship trophy at the final show.  There will be an audience favorite awarded at each show. With the addition of community partners and history of quick sell-out, the DWOS production will be presented on 3 nights- March 22, 23 and 24th  at the Pavilion on the Lake with Opolo Vineyards and Pacific Harvest Catering providing fabulous wines and catered dinner.  Online ticket sales will begin January 15, 2018 at www.AtascaderoDWOS.org
