Meet two remarkable Texas women whose lives quietly shaped history.
Zephyr Wright was a powerhouse in the Civil Rights movement—though her name isn’t nearly as well-known as it should be. An East Texas native and extraordinary cook, Zephyr became the trusted White House chef to President Lyndon B. Johnson, gaining rare behind-the-scenes access and a voice that reached the President himself. Many of her beloved recipes later appeared in cookbooks credited to Lady Bird Johnson—yet the heart and hands behind them were Zephyr’s.
Paired with Zephyr’s story is the equally compelling life of Sarah T. Hughes, the trailblazing North Texas lawyer and judge personally chosen by LBJ to administer his presidential oath of office. Together, their radical, courageous lives helped shape a changing White House—and a changing nation.
Adding a special Texas flair, our own Friends of the Library member Charles Williams will share a Texas poem. A Cowboy Poet, founder of Campfire Tales, and master storyteller, Charles has been captivating audiences for nearly forty years. A familiar face at cowboy poetry gatherings nationwide (including the legendary Elko Gathering), he has published in anthologies, served as a poetry judge, produced events at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and the Texas State Fair, and currently serves as Executive Director of the Will Rogers Medallion Award Committee. Or, as the late J.B. Allen once said: “He ain’t a cowboy, but he’s a real interesting person to talk to.”
