Friends remember Shelly Runowich

The Friends of the Wallkill Public Library will be dedicating an outdoor bench in memory of Shelly Runowich, who passed away in April of 2021.

Shelly was a longtime member of the Friends who devoted much time toward fund-raising efforts for the library.

The dedication will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 11, in the library’s reading room. Those who would like to attend should call the library at 845-895-3707 and leave their name.

Fiction Club selects two new reads

The Book of Lost Names

Kristin Harmel

Cloud Cuckoo Land

Anthony Doerr

The library’s Fiction Club will be reading Kristin Harmel’s The Book of Lost Names for their February meeting and Cloud Cuckoo Land, by Anthony Doerr, for March.

Based on a true story, The Book of Lost Names centers around a young woman who helps hundreds of children flee the Nazis. Cloud Cuckoo Land, by the author of All the Light We Cannot See, is a sweeping novel that takes place over the course of hundreds of years, both on earth and in space.

The Fiction Club will be meeting on February 16 and March 23, both at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

Ready to discover your new online bookseller?

A better way to buy books online

Now there’s an online bookseller that actually helps out local bookstores. Bookshop.org lets users locate their favorite brick-and-mortar bookstore and then donates the full profit from users’ Bookshop.org purchases to that business, combining the convenience of online shopping with the ability to support independent sellers (so we can all get out of the house once in a while and do old-timey things like walk, interact with other humans, and browse physical collections).

It's the next best thing to going to the library!

Great reads without the wait

Simultaneous access for digital content coming soon to Libby

As part of their Everyone Reads program, OverDrive (Libby’s parent company) has donated over 200 simultaneous use Adult Fiction and Nonfiction titles to our collection which includes ebooks and audiobooks from leading publishers with simultaneous access through January 31, 2025.

We will add the Everyone Reads - Adult Collection to your digital collection on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. These simultaneous-use titles are perfect for book clubs and reading groups!

Valentines go viral!

At last count, we had over 70 valentines created to show a little love to our seniors! Response to this program was phenomenal! Thanks everyone for the awesome effort! Above is just a small sampling of handmade Valentines. Kids, teens and adults all enjoyed making Valentines for Hudson Valley seniors. They even decorated the envelopes!

OverDrive app soon to sunset

The OverDrive app used to download the library’s digital material will be discontinued as of the end of April, but the good news is there’s a newer, user-friendly app that you can download now to take its place!

The Libby app is free and will allow you to browse and enjoy all that’s downloadable from Wallkill’s OverDrive collection. Once you download the app, simply find your home library and sign in. Your loans, wish list items, and holds will be visible on your Shelf. As always, if you run into problems, call our circulation desk at 845-895-3707, or stop in so we can help you!

Resources to help you make the transition from Overdrive to Libby:

Libby help: How-to videos and step-by-step instructions on Libby Help explain how to use the app.

Overview page about the transition to Libby: This informational page for users includes an overview about the sunset, FAQs, and training opportunities.

Virtual training: Users can sign up for a virtual training session hosted by team OverDrive.

Options for Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet accepted submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice. Users with Kindle Fire devices can also sideload Libby manually following these steps.
