FRAMEABLE MOMENTS WITH
LARRY CHEN
| | |
Pikes Peak weather is not only unpredictable, but makes for some great photo ops. It can feel like Christmas Day in June! Sometimes, all four seasons roll through in one day.
Pictured: Emelia Hartford raced on Pikes Peak for the first time in 2025. She entered the Pikes Peak GT4 Trophy division by Yokohama driving a 2022 Porsche 718 GT4 RS Clubsport.

| | Archive Donation Helps Tell the Story | | A recent phone call from Doug Gill in Ohio, shed some light on a very early PPIHC entry. Mr. Gill related that he had a photo we might be interested in seeing. He shared his story, saying, "Al Hedington, the name on the back of the photo, was a neighbor who lived next door to my parents in Upper Arlington, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. He told my dad that he worked on this car when he was younger. He gave the framed photo to my dad long ago. After my dad passed, my mom gave it to me. I just found it while sorting through some things." | | Only one photo was available in our PPIHC Archives and, as with many early photos taken at speed, the image was blurred and the photo had significant damage. However, the number 4 was clearly visible. With the time painted on the car in the post-race photo above, it was a match. | | |
In 1921, rookie driver, J.C. Williamson is pictured racing an Allen on Pikes Peak. He finished in a time of 22.49.60. We were pleased when Mr. Gill offered to donate this vintage framed original to our archives. It is a rare find and an important addition!

Trivia Answer: The answer is D.
The race was run in September, near Labor Day, for 32 years from 1920 to 1955. During that time, the race fell on September 7th four times, 1925, 1931, 1936 and 1953. It's interesting to note that the weather cooperated on race day, all four years. No snow is shown in any of the photos. Don Carlson, a rookie in 1953, is pictured in his GMC-powered race car. He was unable to finish the race.
