Meet the Artist
Patricia Samora of Parker, Colorado is 19 years old and recently earned her bachelor's degree in graphic design from Southern New Hampshire University.
Patricia has been interested in digital art since middle school with her passion growing each year as she mastered the design programs. In high school, she was asked to design posters for school sports teams, logos for clubs, and created a banner that would go in front of the marching band during parades.

Patricia will receive a $1,000 award for her winning design. Race fans can pick up a copy of the poster at Fan Fest on June 23
in downtown Colorado Springs!

Inspiration
“I watched old videos of the race, including some from the 50s, to help come up with ideas for the poster. This turn in the road was the one part of the race that was included in every video, so I thought it was only fitting to include it in my design. I shared my design idea with my Uncle Robb and best friend Ricardo. Robb pointed out that the road wasn't paved for many years and suggested I transition the road from dirt to pavement as the cars evolved. Ricardo suggested I add the change in saturation/color to help separate the eras and this ended up being one of my favorite parts of the poster. I used “clouds” for the race theme as the Hill Climb is widely known as “The Race to the Clouds.”

How did those corners get their names?
While not every one of the 156 turns has a name, there is a story behind each of those that do.
Double Cut was once two short sections of road carved out of the mountain with a hill dividing them. During the summer tourist season the inside section was for uphill traffic and the outside section was for vehicles traveling downhill. During the race, a driver could choose either route to get around that corner. The fastest way was the outside section since speed could be maintained. The hill was later removed and this became one wide corner.

Q: Of the 70 competitors entered in the 2023 Race to the Clouds, what percentage are based in Colorado? 23%? 32%? 37%? 42%? |

A: Of the 70 drivers in this year's race, 32% hail from Colorado including Paul Dallenbach (pictured) from Basalt, Colorado. Twenty-three competitors from the Denver-area, Aspen, Boulder, Buena Vista, Colorado Springs, Monument, Larkspur, Cascade and Woodland Park will take on the world on June 25.

Since the 101st Running is only 60 days away, here's a look back at the winners of the Race to the Clouds in 1960.
(Left to right) Louis J. Bobby Unser captures his fourth (third consecutive) King of the Mountain and course record in 1960 in a Pontiac Special in 13:28.50.
Unser would eventually claim 10 King of the Mountain wins on Pikes Peak between 1956 and 1986.
Unser attributed his success at the Indianapolis 500 to his early days racing on Pikes Peak.
