October, 2018 - In This Issue:
From the Desk of Our Executive Director
As October winds down just before election day, my mailbox, email inbox, and even text message notifications are full of campaign and ballot initiative information. Dozens of messages daily to vote for this person or "yes on this" or "no on that" can be overwhelming. As burnt out as you may be (and we're still over a week until election day), I urge you to take some time before November 6th and review your voter information guide, check out your local measures and candidates on Voter's Edge (a thorough resource for California voters), and double check your voter status, polling location, and hours. While many important measures and elected offices are worth researching, at least two items are on many of your ballots that will impact the early care and education landscape. This year, California voters are electing a new Superintendent of Public Instruction: Tony K Thurmond and Marshall Tuck both hail from the Bay Area and have different visions of the future of public education in California. Oakland voters will also be voting on Measure AA, a parcel tax that would "fund education services for pre-K through college students and career readiness". Measure AA would go a long way in giving the youngest low-income Oakland residents equitable access to early care and education opportunities.
However you vote, most important is that you get your ballot in whether by mail or in-person - our future generations thank you.

Be Well,

Renee S. Herzfeld
New Board Members Join 4Cs
Welcome Calyn, Kate, Evan, and Njeri

4Cs of Alameda County is excited to announce that four new Board members have joined the 4Cs leadership team. Calyn Kelley is a Hayward native who is currently completing his graduate work at  University of San Francisco in the Urban and Public Affairs Program. As a parent of a young child, he is looking forward to a career of public service with a focus on the development and implementation of equitable early care and education policy.  Kate  Kleinschmidt  has also recently jumped into parenthood as a mother of a new baby. Kate is a southern Alameda County resident and comes to 4Cs with a breadth of knowledge as a former teacher and nonprofit growth marketing professional. She is excited about merging her newest personal milestone as a mom and professional expertise into her work on the 4Cs' board. Evan Ponchick is another local resident and new board member. Evan is looking forward to bringing his data expertise to 4Cs and has already dived into working with the 4Cs' leadership teams to create more robust data systems for the growing agency. Finally, Njeri McGee-Tyner joined the 4Cs' Board of Directors because she sees first-hand every day how critical essential services, including child care, are for families. As a leader in Alameda County's health services industry providing access to care to underserved populations in the community, and a Commissioner on the Alameda County Community Relations Commission, Njeri's breadth of work across sectors adds a welcome expertise to 4Cs Board of Directors. You can read more about our newest board members here

Welcome Evan, Kate, Calyn, and Njeri to the 4Cs' Team!
