From Boys & Girls Club to International Global Educator: Meet Dana M. Ford

In honor of Black History month, we are proud to feature Dana M. Ford. Dana Ford is an experienced educator with over 15 years of dedication to fostering academic and personal growth in students.

Tell Us About Your Journey:

My personal and professional journeys have always been deeply rooted in academic

excellence, leadership, and service. Growing up in a single-father household as the 8th

of 13 children in a blended family—and the first born to my parents—I learned the

values of flexibility, resourcefulness, and leadership from a young age. As a

first-generation college student and graduate of Florida State University, I embody the

principles of hard work, commitment, and sacrifice.

While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Criminology at Florida

State University, I had the privilege of traveling abroad for volunteer work and

internships in Jamaica, Costa Rica, and London. These experiences allowed me to give

back to underserved communities while fostering the servant leadership within me.

During my internship at a law firm in London, I came to a profound realization: I wanted

to inspire and motivate youth, guiding them to think critically and make good choices

that would help them avoid becoming entangled in the criminal justice system.

This epiphany led me to pursue a Master’s in International Studies with a focus on

Education, which provided the foundation for a career dedicated to empowering others.

My passion for education and community service steered me to work as a Teen

Program Coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club, a role that resonated deeply with me as

a former Club Kid. I understood firsthand the transformative power of mentorship and

education, and I strove to become a beacon of hope for young people navigating

challenges similar to those I faced.

As an avid traveler who has visited over 59 countries and an expatriate with experience

working in the United States, China, the UK, and Belgium, I bring a nuanced

understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. These experiences have honed my

expertise in instructional design, technology integration, and fostering inclusive

classrooms and workplaces.

Beyond my professional accomplishments, I strive to embody resilience and

adaptability, traits that have shaped my ability to connect with others and lead

effectively. My journey has been one of growth, purpose, and unwavering dedication to

making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

What Pivotal Experiences Shaped Your Current Path?

Three transformative experiences have significantly shaped my journey.

The first pivotal experience was my decision to transition from pursuing a legal career to

becoming an educator. While interning at a law firm in London, I realized I wanted to

take a more proactive approach to guiding young minds. Education offered the

opportunity to inspire critical thinking, encourage positive choices, and equip children

with tools to navigate life successfully, helping them avoid the pitfalls of the criminal

justice system. This shift not only aligned with my passion for service but also reaffirmed

my belief in education’s power to transform individuals and communities.

The second pivotal experience was my time as the Teen Program Coordinator at the

Boys & Girls Club of Martin County. During my tenure, I increased teen membership by

an impressive 900%, growing participation from just five to over 50 by designing

engaging programs and forging meaningful relationships with the youth. I collaborated

with local businesses to introduce career services and life skills workshops, empowering

at-risk teenagers to envision and pursue brighter futures. My dedication was recognized

when I received the Advisor of the Year award, an honor that affirmed my passion for

creating tangible, positive change in young lives and solidified my commitment to

fostering growth and opportunity in every role I take on.

The most recent pivotal experience was my role as Associate Director of Studies in

Shanghai, China. This position required me to merge leadership with mentorship,

overseeing a highly diverse team of over 15 teachers from around the world. By

fostering professional growth and driving performance, I discovered the impact of

collaborative leadership in multicultural settings. This experience reinforced my passion

for innovation in education and my desire to support others in reaching their full

potential.

These moments, each a testament to the power of leadership, mentorship, and service,

have been instrumental in shaping the path I follow today.

What are the most valuable lessons you've learned about yourself through your

life and career?

I’ve learned the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. Living and working

internationally taught me to embrace cultural differences and approach challenges with

an open mind. I also discovered my talent for connecting with people, whether

mentoring colleagues or inspiring students, which affirmed my belief in the power of

relationships to effect change. Another valuable lesson, I’m currently learning is that it's not what or who you know, but who knows you and making sure your work and efforts are highly impactful and highly visible if you want people to notice you. “Don’t be bitter, be better”

What drives your desire to contribute and make a difference?

I am driven by a belief in the transformative power of education to unlock potential and

create opportunities. My experiences with at-risk youth and international students

showed me how equitable and inclusive learning environments can change lives. This

fuels my dedication to making education accessible, innovative, and impactful. I’m

always reminded by the quote: “Information without application is fascination, but

information with application is transformation” and I’m in the transformative business.

If you could go back and advise your younger self, what would it be?

I would tell my younger self to embrace change and seek discomfort. Growth often

comes from pushing beyond your comfort zone. I’d also emphasize the value of

networking and maintaining relationships, as these connections often lead to

unexpected opportunities.
